For a stronger block, check both the app and browser access on every device your child uses; a single app restriction does not necessarily block the website.
Choose the right kind of limit

Set limits in ChatGPT for a teen account
ChatGPT’s parental controls are an account-level option for a teen and parent or guardian. They can adjust supported features and schedule Quiet hours, but they are not a device-wide internet block.
- On the web, the parent or guardian opens the profile menu and selects Settings > Parental controls > Add family member.
- Invite the teen by phone or email. The teen must accept the invitation before the accounts are linked.
- Under Family members, select the teen’s account to review available settings and make changes.
- To schedule a period without ChatGPT access, configure Quiet hours with a start and end time. More than one quiet period can be added.
Available controls include sensitive-content safeguards, model-improvement data use, saved memories, Voice Mode, image generation, and Study mode. Availability and defaults vary by setting; consult OpenAI’s current instructions for the options shown on the account.
Quiet hours are different from Study hours
Use Quiet hours when the goal is to make ChatGPT unavailable on a schedule. Study hours start eligible new conversations in study mode during scheduled times, but do not restrict access; they also do not apply to GPT or Project conversations.

Know what account linking does—and does not—share
OpenAI says linking accounts “does not give a parent or guardian access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity.” Either linked person can unlink. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and loses control of settings and notifications for that account. Safety notifications are limited to certain serious-risk situations and do not include chat transcripts. For more context, see ChatGPT for Teens.
Block ChatGPT on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
Apple’s Screen Time family controls can restrict specific apps and websites. The current Apple guide describes managing a child’s apps and websites through Settings > Family > [child] > Apps & Websites.

- On the parent’s Apple device, open Settings > Family and select the child.
- Open Apps & Websites, then use the available controls to allow or block the relevant app or website.
- For tighter web access in Safari and other supported browsers, consider Ask to Browse, which requires approval for new websites, or Approved Websites Only under website filtering.
Apple notes that feature availability varies by device, operating-system version, the child’s age, and region. Its support page also describes updated controls for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and other OS 27 releases; families on other versions may see different settings or menus. Check Apple’s current guide for your devices.
Limit ChatGPT on Android or Chromebook with Family Link
Google Family Link lets parents manage apps and screen time on supported supervised devices. Setup requires a child Google Account and a compatible device; Google’s cited compatibility information lists Android 6.0 or later and Chromebooks with Chrome OS 71 or later for child-device supervision. Requirements can change, so verify current compatibility on Google’s Family Link page.

- Set up supervision for the child’s Google Account and supported device using Google’s Family Link instructions.
- Use Family Link’s app controls to allow or block the ChatGPT app, if it is installed or available to install.
- Set a daily screen-time limit or schedule if you want to limit device use rather than ChatGPT specifically.
- Check the browsers the child can use separately. The general Google setup page describes app and time controls, but does not document a direct ChatGPT domain block.
Block ChatGPT with Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft Family Safety provides app and website controls. Microsoft’s support instructions specifically list chat.openai.com among sites parents may consider blocking.
- In Microsoft Family Safety, choose the family member, open the Windows tab, and find the app under Apps, features, and games.
- Select Block app to restrict the ChatGPT app listed for that child.
- For website access, open Web safety > Blocked sites and add the ChatGPT site, following the current Microsoft instructions.
- Review the other browsers listed for the child and block any that would otherwise provide an alternate route. Microsoft’s web-safety coverage depends on supported browsers and devices.

Check whether the limit covers the ways your child connects
- Check each device: a restriction on a phone does not automatically apply to a tablet or computer.
- Check both app and web access: blocking the app may leave browser access available, and blocking one website does not necessarily block every route or browser.
- Check browsers: Microsoft explicitly recommends blocking other browsers as part of its app-blocking approach; Apple and Google controls also depend on supported settings and devices.
- Verify the current menus and requirements: platform controls can vary by OS release, account setup, age, region, and browser support.
