In the U.S., Essential covers core PlayStation Plus benefits, Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, and Premium adds classic games, trials, and cloud streaming. Choose by the benefits you will actually use: a higher tier does not automatically mean better value, and catalog games can leave the service.
What is the difference between PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium?
All three U.S. tiers include the core membership benefits: monthly games, online multiplayer for games that require Plus, cloud storage, Share Play, and discounts. Extra and Premium add benefits on top of that foundation.

Sony describes the Game Catalog as hundreds of games, but its contents change. A particular title is not guaranteed to remain included. Benefits can also vary by country; this comparison describes Sony’s U.S. offering. See PlayStation Plus plans and benefits for Sony’s current plan details.
Which PlayStation Plus plan should you choose?
Choose Essential for core benefits
Essential is the tier to consider if you want monthly games, cloud saves, discounts, or online multiplayer for a game that requires Plus, without paying for the larger game catalogs, trials, or streaming. Check a game’s PlayStation Store listing: Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games with online multiplayer require Plus, but some do not. Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page explains the qualification.

Consider Extra for its changing catalog
Extra is relevant if you expect to play games in the Game Catalog or use Ubisoft+ Classics. Before subscribing, look up the specific games you want and confirm they are currently included. Access depends on an active membership and whether each title remains available.
Consider Premium for classics, trials, or streaming
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. It is worth considering if those are features you will use and are available for your account, device, and location. Sony’s U.S. information also lists the Sony Pictures Catalog; availability of benefits differs by territory.

How do cloud saves and sharing work?
Sony’s current U.S. support page lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saves across the three plans. The page was accessed in 2026; it does not state a publication year. Membership is tied to an account, but Sony says selected benefits can be shared on a primary PS4 or on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. Check Sony’s support details for the current sharing conditions.
What should you know about catalogs, DLC, and PS4 games?
Catalog access is not the same as owning a game. Sony says access depends on your membership and whether the content remains available. DLC tied to a catalog game may become unusable if your membership expires or the base game leaves the service. Cloud streaming does not support DLC or add-ons. In an official notice, Sony said that starting in January 2026, PS4 titles would be added less regularly to monthly game lineups and Game Catalog updates. That does not mean PS4 titles have stopped appearing. The notice is at Important notice.
Is PS Plus Extra worth it, and what does Premium streaming require?
There is no universal value calculation: compare the current price shown to your account with the games and features you expect to use. Extra’s case rests on the specific Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics titles you want to play; Premium’s rests on whether its classics, trials, and supported streaming options matter to you. Catalog membership does not guarantee permanent access to a particular title.

Sony’s current U.S. plan page says cloud streaming needs at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those are Sony’s stated connection thresholds, not a guarantee that every game, device, or territory supports streaming. Sony’s U.S. FAQ describes streaming on PS4, PS5, and PC, as well as selected streaming to PS5 or PlayStation Portal. How do you pay for or gift a membership?
A PlayStation Store gift card is an optional way to add funds to a PlayStation Store wallet; it is not required to subscribe. Sony’s U.S. terms say wallet funds may be used to renew a subscription, and Sony explains how to redeem a Store voucher in its voucher redemption guide. A PlayStation Plus subscription voucher is different: it specifies a plan and term, and may convert existing membership time. Check Sony’s U.S. Plus vouchers guide before redeeming one.
