The first may be blocked by your card issuer or the purchase provider; the second may be blocked by the issuer, card program, or merchant rules. Check the transaction in your card app before retrying, then contact the party that can explain the specific authorization decision.
First, identify which payment was declined
“Stablecoin card payment” can describe two different transactions, and they do not have the same failure points:
- Buying stablecoins with a bank card: You enter a conventional debit or credit card at a stablecoin checkout. The card issuer may reject the crypto-related purchase, or the provider may be unable to complete verification or support your card or country. Crossmint describes these issues for token and stablecoin purchases through its checkout in its declined-card guidance.
- Paying a merchant with a stablecoin-linked card: You use a spending card connected to a crypto or stablecoin balance. The card program and merchant-category rules may apply in addition to the issuer’s authorization decision. The reasons listed by Crypto.com’s USD Card support, for example, are specific to that product and should not be assumed to apply to every card.
A stablecoin balance does not guarantee that a card transaction will be approved. Card acceptance is an authorization decision involving the issuer and, for a linked spending card, the card program’s rules.
Common reasons for a decline
The issuer blocked the transaction
When you use a bank card to buy stablecoins, the issuer may restrict crypto-related transactions or decline one under its risk controls. Messages such as “Do not honour” or “Transaction not permitted” are generic: they do not reveal the bank’s underlying reason. Stripe’s guidance for a do_not_honor decline recommends asking the issuing bank to investigate and providing the company name, amount, and date and time.

The card program or merchant does not allow the purchase
A stablecoin-linked spending card may be blocked temporarily, may not support a particular merchant category, or may not allow the transaction type you selected. Crypto.com’s USD Card guidance also names installments, an incorrect PIN, and incorrect online card details as possible causes for that product. These are examples, not universal rules; check your own program’s terms and settings.
The available balance or limit is too low
The amount shown as your asset balance may not equal the amount available to spend. Pending authorizations can reduce the available balance, while a merchant’s pre-authorization or a bank fee can make the total exceed your limit. Coinbase Card troubleshooting advises checking available funds, per-transaction and daily or monthly limits, and possible pre-authorizations. Hotels and gas stations may initially authorize more than the eventual bill. Crossmint also notes that fees, including foreign or crypto-related fees, may push a card-funded purchase over its available limit.

Verification, card details, or eligibility did not match
A card-funded stablecoin purchase may fail if a 3-D Secure challenge was not completed, or if the card type or issuing country is unsupported by the checkout. For a merchant purchase, incorrect online details or PIN can cause a decline. Check that your card and profile details match, your card is active, and your region is supported by the provider or program. Coinbase’s troubleshooting page covers these checks for Coinbase Card; eligibility varies by region and program.
How to troubleshoot without creating more failed attempts
- Determine what you were paying for. Was a conventional bank card being used to buy stablecoins, or were you using a stablecoin-linked spending card at an ordinary merchant? Contact the relevant provider only after identifying the route.
- Read the transaction details in the app. Check the decline message and confirm that the card is active and not frozen or temporarily blocked.
- Refresh your spendable balance and review limits. Account for pending holds, a merchant pre-authorization, applicable fees, and transaction or daily and monthly limits.
- Check eligibility and transaction rules. Confirm your country and card type are supported, the merchant category is allowed, and the card is in the correct mode. Where relevant, check online or international settings and whether installments are excluded by your card program.
- Verify the payment details and method. For an online transaction, check the card number, expiration date, name, billing address, and CVV. For an in-store transaction, check the PIN and use a payment method supported by the card.
- Complete any bank verification. Finish the 3-D Secure or bank-app challenge and wait for confirmation before leaving checkout.
- Ask the issuer about a generic decline. If the message says “do not honor” or gives no useful reason, provide the issuer with the merchant or company name, amount, and date and time. Ask whether it blocked the authorization and whether a new attempt can be approved. Crossmint advises contacting the bank before retrying because repeated declines may lead to additional pending holds.
- Escalate if the issuer says it approved the payment. Contact the card program or checkout provider with the merchant, amount, time, and error shown. Crypto.com requests transaction details when investigating a USD Card decline.
A provider may say the payment was declined, but a generic code is not a diagnosis. Stripe likewise directs cardholders to ask the issuing bank to investigate a do_not_honor response.

Why a declined payment can still appear as pending
A pending entry may be an authorization hold rather than a completed charge. The merchant or checkout can request an authorization that reduces your available balance even though the transaction was not captured. Coinbase explains that merchant pre-authorizations generally release after the merchant completes or cancels the transaction; if one remains afterward, contact support.
Release timing depends on the bank, merchant, and card program. Crossmint says its bank may take up to 10 business days to release a hold for a failed stablecoin purchase through its service. That is Crossmint-specific, not a universal deadline. Crossmint also says it cannot cancel or speed up the release because the bank controls it; contact your bank if its hold remains beyond that provider’s stated period.

Who to contact—and what to tell them
For a generic issuer decline, start with the issuing bank; it can investigate its authorization decision. Give it the exact company or merchant name, amount, and transaction date and time, and ask whether it blocked the payment. If the issuer confirms approval but checkout or the merchant still failed, contact the card program or payment provider with those details and the error shown. Apple’s general guidance for a declined Apple Pay card also explains that authorization is handled by the card issuer: Apple Support: If a payment card that you use with Apple Pay is declined.
