A linked adult can manage selected settings and schedules; linking does not let them read the teen’s chats or monitor activity in real time.
Link a parent or guardian account to a teen account
Either the adult or the teen can start the link. The person receiving the invitation must accept it before the accounts are linked.
Parent or guardian sends the invitation
- In ChatGPT on the web, open the profile menu and select Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Add family member, then choose Use phone or Use email.
- Enter the teen’s phone number or email address and select Send.
- Ask the teen to open the invitation link and accept it. Once linked, select the teen’s name under Family members to manage available controls.
Teen sends the invitation
- On the teen account, open Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Invite a parent, choose phone or email, enter the adult’s contact information, and select Send.
- The adult opens the invitation and accepts it. The linked adult then appears under Family members.
If an invitation is pending, the recipient can accept it from Settings > Parental controls. A teen can see which parent-managed controls are on or off, but cannot change those settings.
What parental controls can a linked adult manage?
Open Settings > Parental controls and select the teen under Family members. OpenAI lists controls for sensitive-content reduction, whether teen conversations can be used to improve models, saved memories where available, Voice Mode, image generation, study mode, study hours, and quiet hours. Certain ChatGPT Work controls—Codex network access and Cloud browser—may also appear. The controls and their defaults can vary; do not assume every listed feature is available or enabled on every account or in every region. See OpenAI’s parental-controls guide.

Study hours and quiet hours are different

To configure quiet hours, go to Settings > Parental controls > [teen] > Quiet hours. Study hours and quiet hours address different needs: one changes how eligible conversations start, while the other restricts use during scheduled times.
Changes may have different scopes
Some settings apply only to new conversations, so an existing conversation may continue with its previous settings. ChatGPT Work controls also have separate scopes: turning off Codex network access does not control search, plugins, connectors, or Cloud browser. A parent may ask ChatGPT in a conversation to change a supported control; the parent must review the request and select Allow or Deny. Invitations, account links, and some settings still need to be handled in Parental controls.

What age limits apply to ChatGPT?
OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and that users aged 13 to 18 need parental consent. OpenAI also advises caution about children’s exposure to ChatGPT even when they meet the stated age requirements. In education contexts involving children under 13, the actual interaction with ChatGPT must be conducted by an adult. These are OpenAI’s stated service rules and guidance, not a complete account of the law in every jurisdiction. Read OpenAI’s age guidance.
Why might a teen account get ChatGPT for Teens automatically?
OpenAI says an account identified as belonging to someone under 18 may automatically receive ChatGPT for Teens; the user does not need to enable it manually. Identification may use age information provided with the account, verified age, or age prediction. OpenAI describes the teen experience as including safeguards and features such as learning-focused flows, study tools, reminders, and age-appropriate content protections. Reviewing an age category is not the same as verifying age
To view the account’s age category, go to Settings > Account > Age. This display does not let the account holder edit their date of birth. OpenAI says age prediction can consider signals such as general conversation topics, usage times and patterns, and how long the account has existed. It acknowledges the system can be wrong, but does not publish a full list of signals, their weights, or an accuracy rate.
If an adult believes they were mistakenly placed in the teen experience, Settings > Account > Verify age may be available. In some locations, OpenAI may require age verification for legal reasons; follow the instructions and deadline shown to the signed-in account. OpenAI’s help page says verification in Italy uses Persona and may involve a live selfie, government-issued ID, or both. That method is location-specific, not a universal process. What happens when a teen account holder turns 18?
When ChatGPT identifies a linked teen account as belonging to someone 18 or older, teen protections are turned off by default and the parent link ends. OpenAI says this transition is gradually rolling out to eligible accounts and that the account holder receives advance notification. If the account holder is still under 18 and thinks the transition is incorrect, they can start age verification; the parent cannot do it on their behalf. No. OpenAI says account linking does not give a parent or guardian access to the teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. In limited safety-notification situations, OpenAI says it shares information it considers necessary to support the teen, not conversation transcripts. Either the teen or linked adult can unlink at any time. The adult is notified if the teen unlinks and then loses the ability to manage that account’s settings or receive its teen safety notifications. See OpenAI’s parental-controls guide.

Does turning off sensitive-content reduction remove teen protections?
No. Sensitive-content reduction is on by default for teen accounts in the teen experience, and a linked parent may be able to turn off that safeguard. Doing so does not change the account into an adult account or remove other teen protections, product limits, or safety systems.
