PlayStation Plus games stop being playable through your membership when it expires, even if they are still downloaded or listed in your library. Renewing can restore access to eligible titles, but catalog games must still be included in your tier and remain available on the service. A separate purchase of a specific game may provide its own license.
What happens to each kind of PlayStation Plus content?
The result depends on how you got the game. Adding a monthly game to your library is not the same as buying it, and catalog games are available only while your membership and the title’s catalog availability allow it.
| Content | Membership needed | What happens when membership expires |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly games claimed to your library | Any current PlayStation Plus tier | You cannot play them through the membership entitlement until membership is active again. Sony says monthly games can be played while you have an active plan. PlayStation Plus games |
| Game Catalog titles | Extra or Premium | Access through the catalog ends. A title may also become unavailable if it leaves the service. PlayStation Plus games |
| Classics Catalog titles | Premium | Access through the catalog ends, and the title must still be in the catalog to play through the subscription. PlayStation Plus games |
| DLC or add-ons for a catalog game | Access to the base game through the catalog, or a separate purchase of the base game | The add-ons become inaccessible if membership expires or the base game leaves the service. Sony says access can return if you resubscribe or buy the base game. PlayStation Plus games |
Why a downloaded game may still be locked
Downloading installs the game files; it does not turn a subscription entitlement into a permanent purchase. Sony’s access guidance requires the appropriate plan for catalog downloads. In a 23 May 2022 PlayStation Blog post, Sony also said that downloaded catalog games in Extra and Premium/Deluxe require a PSN connection every seven days to validate membership when played offline. That interval is an offline validation requirement, not a seven-day grace period after a subscription expires. PlayStation Blog: Introducing the all-new PlayStation Plus
Renewing does not restore a game that left the catalog
Subscription expiry and a game’s removal from the catalog are separate reasons access can end. If you renew, you may regain access to a monthly game or catalog title that is still eligible and available. Renewal does not restore catalog access to a title that has since left the service. Check the current catalog listing and any removal notice on the game’s PlayStation page. PlayStation Plus games

What happens to saved data?
Game access and saved data are separate. Sony says saves for downloaded games are stored on the PS4 or PS5 console, while saves for streamed games are stored on PlayStation. Cloud storage is a PlayStation Plus benefit, but Sony’s reviewed support information does not specify how long cloud saves remain available after membership expires or whether you can access them then.
