If a JBL PartyBox will not pair, reconnect, or play sound, first check power, volume, the active input, and the source device’s Bluetooth and audio-output settings. Then pair or reconnect using the instructions for your exact PartyBox model. Button holds, input priorities, and reset procedures vary by model, so do not assume one model’s steps apply to another.
Start with the basics
Before changing Bluetooth settings, confirm that the speaker is on and has power. Raise the PartyBox volume and the phone, tablet, or other source device’s volume; check that neither is muted. Make sure the source is actually playing audio.
- Confirm the PartyBox is powered on.
- Raise the volume on both the speaker and source device.
- Check mute and verify that media is playing.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the source device if you intend to use Bluetooth.
JBL lists power, volume, and an active audio source among the initial no-sound checks in the PartyBox 100 Owner’s Manual and PartyBox On-The-Go Essential Owner’s Manual.
If the PartyBox does not appear or pair
Put the speaker in pairing mode
Use the PartyBox’s Bluetooth control to enter pairing mode, then open Bluetooth settings on your phone, tablet, or other source device and select the speaker’s displayed name. The control, pairing indication, and device name depend on the model; follow its manual rather than assuming every PartyBox uses the same procedure. For example, the PartyBox 310 manual names the device “JBL PARTYBOX 310,” while the Encore manual names it “JBL PartyBox Encore.”

Check for an existing connection
A PartyBox may already be connected to another phone or tablet. Disconnect it from that device, or use the Bluetooth control as directed by the speaker’s own manual before trying to connect a new source. The PartyBox 100 and On-The-Go Essential manuals describe different hold durations for changing connections, so do not copy a button-hold time from one model to another.
JBL’s Bluetooth pairing and connecting guidance distinguishes pairing (remembering the devices) from connecting (establishing the link needed for playback). If you paired the speaker before but it does not reconnect, select it manually in the source device’s Bluetooth settings.

If it paired before but will not reconnect
Open Bluetooth settings on the source device and tap the PartyBox entry to connect manually. A remembered pairing does not guarantee that an active connection has been established, and automatic reconnection is not guaranteed. If another source device is connected to the speaker, disconnect that device first using the model-specific instructions.
If Bluetooth audio is weak or keeps cutting out
Move the source device closer to the PartyBox and remove obstacles between them. JBL says Bluetooth performance can vary with distance and the operating environment; its PartyBox troubleshooting guidance recommends moving closer or clearing obstacles when reception is poor.

If the PartyBox connects but plays no sound
Check the selected audio output
On the phone, tablet, computer, or other source device, confirm that media audio is routed to the PartyBox rather than the device’s built-in speaker, headphones, or another Bluetooth accessory. Check volume and mute again on both devices.
Check which PartyBox input is active
Bluetooth may be connected while another input is playing. The Encore and On-The-Go Essential manuals document source priority as USB, then Bluetooth, then AUX: a higher-priority source can displace a lower-priority one. Stop playback from the higher-priority input if you want Bluetooth audio, and check your own model’s manual because source behavior may differ.

Reset only as a last resort
Do not factory-reset the PartyBox just to reconnect it. JBL describes resetting as a drastic step; a factory reset can erase stored pairings and other settings, after which devices may need to be paired again. If the basic checks and model-specific pairing steps fail, consult the exact model’s manual for its reset controls and duration. Do not use a reset combination taken from a different PartyBox model.

If the speaker still will not connect or play audio after you have followed its manual’s troubleshooting steps, contact JBL support or service. JBL’s PartyBox 100 Owner’s Manual warns: “Never try to repair the product by yourself.”

Model details that should not be generalized
Manuals illustrate why it is important to use the instructions for the exact speaker:
- The PartyBox 310 manual describes pairing through the Bluetooth control, selecting “JBL PARTYBOX 310,” manual selection if automatic reconnection fails, and storage for up to eight paired devices; a ninth paired device replaces the first. JBL also notes that distance and environment can affect Bluetooth performance.
- The PartyBox Encore manual documents USB, Bluetooth, and AUX priority in that order, pairing with “JBL PartyBox Encore,” and memory for up to eight paired devices.
- The On-The-Go Essential manual specifies its own Bluetooth-control hold durations and factory-reset procedure, and includes checks for battery state, active source, mute, poor reception, and an existing connection.
These examples describe only the named models, not every JBL PartyBox. Consult the current manual for your model for exact controls, source behavior, and reset instructions.
