For everyday work, 16GB of unified memory is a reasonable choice for a MacBook Air. If you regularly work with large creative projects, several demanding apps at once, development tools and simulators, virtual machines, or local machine-learning workloads, consider a 24GB or 32GB configuration instead. These are practical workload guidelines, not universal minimums.
What memory configurations does the 2026 MacBook Air offer?
Apple lists 16GB of unified memory as the standard configuration for both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with M5. Each model can also be configured with 24GB or 32GB. Check the exact model and configuration on Apple’s MacBook Air specifications, since product options can change.
Apple calls it unified memory. The specifications page identifies configurations; it does not establish a universal workload requirement or document post-purchase repairability. Treat the choice as a configuration decision when buying, rather than assuming the listed capacity is a user-replaceable RAM module.
When is 16GB enough for a MacBook Air?
For a typical mix of web browsing, documents, email, messaging, video calls, streaming, schoolwork, and ordinary multitasking, 16GB is a sensible fit. This is a practical recommendation, not a benchmark guarantee: the apps you use together and the size of your files and projects matter.

Consider 24GB or 32GB if memory-heavy work is a regular part of your day. Examples include large creative projects, development environments and simulators, virtual machines, local machine-learning workloads, or several demanding applications open together. More memory gives these workloads additional headroom, but Apple’s cited specifications do not state a universal minimum for any particular app or activity.
How should you compare 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB?
| Factor | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Workload and concurrency | Routine everyday apps are a reasonable use case for 16GB. Repeatedly running demanding tools together or working with large projects is a reason to consider more. |
| Memory pressure on a Mac you already use | Check the graph during representative work. Recurring yellow or red pressure is more informative than a single reading of memory used or swap used. |
| How long you expect to keep it | If you plan to keep the laptop for years, extra capacity may give you more room as your projects and software needs change. That is a purchasing judgment, not a guarantee. |
| Configuration and budget | Apple lists 24GB and 32GB options for both current M5 sizes. Weigh the cost of the higher configuration against how often your real work strains memory; the cited specifications do not establish a current price comparison. |
How to check memory pressure on a Mac you already use
- Open Activity Monitor and select the Memory tab.
- Use the Mac for a representative stretch of your normal work, with the apps and projects you typically run together.
- Watch the memory-pressure graph over time rather than treating one snapshot, or a high memory-used number, as a pass/fail test.
- Consider the pattern alongside real symptoms such as slowdowns or apps frequently reloading. Persistent yellow or red pressure during important tasks is a stronger reason to seek more memory than high usage alone.
Apple says memory pressure reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and cached files. macOS can compress inactive memory and use startup-disk space for swap; cached files can be reclaimed. Consequently, memory looking full does not by itself prove that the Mac needs more capacity. Apple’s guide describes green pressure as efficient RAM use, yellow as meaning the computer might eventually need more RAM, and red as meaning it needs more. See Apple’s guidance on viewing memory usage in Activity Monitor and checking whether your Mac needs more RAM.

Will a dock add memory?
No. A USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 dock can add desk connectivity for peripherals, but it cannot increase the MacBook Air’s unified-memory capacity. Choose a higher memory configuration if your workload needs more headroom; a dock is a separate connectivity accessory.
