Choose a Chromebook if your essential work fits browser-based services and the Android apps or Linux tools you need are supported on that specific model. Choose a Windows laptop if you rely on installable Windows desktop software, organization-deployed apps, or hardware capabilities required by your software. Neither platform is universally better: make a list of your must-have apps and features, then verify they work on the exact device you plan to buy.

What is the difference between a Chromebook and a Windows laptop?

A Chromebook is a laptop running ChromeOS. Google presents Chromebooks for common tasks such as productivity, collaboration, web browsing, email, entertainment, and gaming, but that general description does not guarantee how well every model handles a particular workload. Google’s Chromebook overview describes the platform and its intended uses.

Both platforms can use web applications. The practical difference is whether your workflow also depends on software designed to install and run as a Windows desktop app. Windows documents app installation from the Microsoft Store, the internet, and organization-shared drives. That gives Windows a more direct route for Windows-targeted applications, but does not guarantee that every app works on every Windows laptop. Check the software maker’s supported Windows version and hardware requirements. Microsoft’s Windows app guidance describes installation options, and its Windows 11 specifications note that some applications require more than the operating system’s minimum specifications.

Compare the platforms by the work you need to do

Workflow Chromebook / ChromeOS Windows laptop
Web-based productivity Google documents support for common web productivity and collaboration tools, including services such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Confirm that their web versions include the features you need. Google Chromebook overview; Google Chromebook app guidance. Windows supports web applications as well as installed software. Microsoft 365 Use Microsoft 365 web apps. Microsoft says the Windows or Mac desktop versions cannot be installed on a Chromebook, and lists its Android Office, Outlook, OneNote, and OneDrive apps as currently unsupported there. Microsoft Chromebook support. Windows supports the Microsoft app ecosystem and Windows application installation routes. Check the requirements of the specific app and subscription you plan to use. Microsoft Windows app guidance.
Android apps Google Play is available on some Chromebook models, not all. Individual apps may not work on a given device, and work or school administrators can restrict Play Store access. Google Play on Chromebook guidance. Do not assume Android apps will run on Windows based on older Windows documentation. Verify current Microsoft support information if Android apps are a deciding requirement.
Developer tools The optional Debian Linux environment supports command-line tools, code editors, and IDEs, but has documented limits for cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration. Work or school policy may disable it. Google Linux on Chromebook guidance. Windows offers installation and deployment routes for Windows software, but you still need to verify the tools and device specifications required for your development work. Microsoft Windows app guidance; Windows 11 specifications.
Traditional desktop software Do not assume Windows programs install natively. Check whether each required app has a suitable web, Android, Linux, or remote-access version. Microsoft specifically rules out installing desktop Office on Chromebook. Microsoft Chromebook support. A more direct fit for software distributed as Windows desktop applications, subject to the app’s supported Windows version and device requirements. Microsoft Windows app guidance; Windows 11 specifications.
Setup and connectivity Web services may require internet access; check the offline capabilities of the particular apps and files in your workflow. Microsoft Chromebook support. Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require internet and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Updates and some features also need internet. Windows 11 specifications.

When a Chromebook is the better fit

  • Your core work happens in Google Workspace or other browser-based services, and their web versions have the features you need. Google’s Chromebook guidance recommends web productivity tools including Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. Google Chromebook app guidance.
  • You can use Microsoft 365 in a browser and do not need desktop Office installation or the Android Microsoft apps Microsoft lists as unsupported on Chromebooks. Microsoft Chromebook support.
  • You have checked that each required Android app is available on your Chromebook model and is permitted by your school or workplace, if applicable. Google Play on Chromebook guidance.
  • Your developer workflow uses tools supported by ChromeOS’s Linux environment and does not depend on its documented unsupported camera, Android emulator, or hardware-acceleration capabilities. Google Linux on Chromebook guidance.

When a Windows laptop is the better fit

  • A required program is distributed as Windows desktop software or your organization deploys applications through Windows management tools. Microsoft’s guidance covers installations from the Store, the internet, and shared drives. Microsoft Windows app guidance.
  • Your work depends on a particular performance level, peripheral, or device capability. Compare the app’s requirements with the laptop’s processor, memory, storage, graphics, and ports; an operating system’s minimum requirements do not ensure that demanding software will run well. Windows 11 specifications.
  • You need a conventional installation path for Windows-targeted business, specialist, or peripheral software. This is a general fit, not a guarantee that a particular program or device is compatible; confirm support with the software maker and device specifications. Microsoft Windows app guidance; Windows 11 specifications.

Can you use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook?

Yes, through Microsoft 365 on the web. Microsoft says Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Outlook can be accessed in a browser. It also says you cannot install the Windows or Mac desktop versions of Microsoft 365 or Office 2016 on a Chromebook, and that the Android Office, Outlook, OneNote, and OneDrive apps are currently unsupported there. Microsoft’s Chromebook-specific support page is the clearest guide for the current Microsoft 365 workflow.

Check compatibility before choosing a laptop

  1. List the exact apps and features you depend on. Include specialist software, required plug-ins, file formats, peripherals, and any work or school tools—not just broad categories such as “office” or “design.”
  2. Check how each app is delivered. Find out whether it is a web app, Android app, Linux tool, or Windows desktop program. For a Chromebook, verify model-specific Play Store and Linux support; for Windows, check the app’s supported Windows version.
  3. Confirm the features you actually use. A browser version may not offer the same workflow as a desktop app. For Microsoft 365 on Chromebook, plan on web apps rather than desktop Office installation or the listed Android apps. Microsoft Chromebook support.
  4. Match the hardware to the software. Check the laptop’s processor, memory, storage, graphics, display, and ports against the application’s requirements. Do not treat Windows 11’s minimum specifications as a guarantee for demanding apps. Windows 11 specifications.
  5. Check policy and connectivity. Schools and workplaces may disable Chromebook Play Store access or Linux. Also verify offline behavior for the apps you need; Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require internet and a Microsoft account for initial setup. Google Play guidance; Google Linux guidance; Windows 11 specifications.

What the platform choice does not tell you

The operating-system category alone does not establish which laptop is faster, cheaper, more secure, or longer-lasting. Those comparisons require current, like-for-like models and conditions; the official platform documentation cited here does not provide a neutral matched comparison of Chromebook and Windows performance, price, battery life, or compatibility. Compare the particular devices and configurations against your workload rather than assuming a universal winner.
