Boundary-wire-free robot mowers use a virtual map or boundary—usually set in a manufacturer’s app—instead of relying on a buried perimeter wire. Satellite positioning, sometimes improved with RTK-GNSS correction data, helps the mower locate itself and follow that map. Separate sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, ToF, radar, or contact sensors help it detect nearby obstacles. How well those systems work depends on the model and the conditions on your lawn.

How does a robot mower work without a boundary wire?

You map the lawn or define its limits in the mower’s app. The mower then uses its positioning system to estimate where it is and navigate the virtual mowing area. You may also be able to set no-go zones in the app; the exact mapping and setup options vary by model.

Many wire-free mowers use satellite positioning. Husqvarna’s EPOS system, for example, uses RTK-GNSS—satellite positioning supported by correction data—to create virtual boundaries. RTK is not one universal setup: correction data may be delivered from a reference station or through a cloud service, and coverage requirements depend on the system. A local antenna is not required by every wire-free model.

What RTK correction figures mean

Manufacturer figures describe particular systems, not a category-wide guarantee. Husqvarna says its EPOS correction delivered through an RS 4G reference station has a range of up to 25 km and typically achieves 1–2 cm accuracy within 10 km. For its cloud-delivered EPOS correction, Husqvarna reports typical accuracy of 1–6 cm. Husqvarna also lists up to 500 m range and typical accuracy of 1–2 cm for its RS5 reference station. The pages do not state a publication year for these figures; actual performance depends on the setup and conditions.

ECOVACS says its GOAT O1000 RTK receives signals from up to 45 satellites and improves positioning precision to 0.8 inch. That is a manufacturer product claim, not an independent comparison with other mowers.

What happens when a robot mower loses satellite signal?

Trees and buildings can obstruct satellite signals. What the mower does next is model-specific. Kress says its RTKⁿ mowers use inertial navigation and odometry—estimating movement from onboard sensors and wheel travel—when satellite reception is blocked, then return to satellite positioning when reception resumes. Kress also notes that inertial navigation can accumulate errors over time.

Husqvarna says a physical support wire may still be installed in areas with poor satellite coverage. Its Australian FAQ describes reference-station and cloud correction options with different coverage and accuracy details. These examples show why it is worth checking a specific mower’s fallback behavior and correction setup rather than assuming every wire-free mower can navigate reliably through every signal shadow.

How does a wire-free robotic mower handle obstacles?

Obstacle detection is separate from virtual-boundary navigation. Positioning and the app’s map tell the mower where it is and where it should mow; local sensors and software help it respond to objects nearby. Depending on the model, those sensors may include cameras with AI vision, LiDAR, ToF, radar, infrared or ultrasonic sensors, and contact sensors.

  • Husqvarna describes AI vision on camera-equipped wire-free mowers to identify objects and react to them.
  • ECOVACS’s GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO uses 360-degree LiDAR, front ToF sensors, and a fisheye camera. ECOVACS says this model detects over 200 types of obstacles; that is a manufacturer claim about this model, not an independently established benchmark.
  • Exmark describes radar-based obstacle sensing on its commercial XiQ system.

These are different sensor implementations, not evidence that one technology is best in every lawn or condition. The reviewed manufacturer sources do not establish independent, comparable market-wide accuracy or obstacle-detection results, and obstacle avoidance should not be treated as foolproof.

Does a robot mower with a camera work at night?

It depends on the mower and its camera system. Husqvarna says a covered or dirty camera, heavy rain, or darkness can affect some of its camera-based systems; its 300-series daylight vision features do not work at night. That limitation should not be generalized to every mower: infrared or other sensor systems may behave differently, so check the conditions and nighttime operation specified for the model you are considering.

What to check before choosing a wire-free mower

Match the navigation and sensing system to the actual lawn, not just the “wire-free” label. Compare:

  • Positioning and setup: whether the mower uses RTK-GNSS, a local reference station, network or cloud correction, or a LiDAR- or vision-oriented approach—and whether the required service or equipment is available where you live.
  • Signal resilience: what the manufacturer documents for areas beneath trees or beside buildings, and whether a support wire or another fallback is available.
  • Obstacle sensing: which sensors the model uses, what objects the manufacturer says they can detect, and any restrictions related to rain, darkness, dirt, or visibility.
  • Mapping and control: how you define boundaries and no-go zones in the app, and what setup steps are required.
  • Lawn fit: whether the mower’s stated capacity and navigation features suit your lawn’s size, layout, structures, and signal conditions.

Manufacturer explanations and product pages describe their own systems and claims; they do not provide neutral, comparable tests across brands. Confirm regional availability and model-specific details before buying.
