Use the descaling prompt and instructions for your exact De’Longhi model: button sequences, descaler amounts, water levels, container sizes and rinse steps differ. In general, you prepare the machine and its tank, place a container under the outlets, run the guided cycle and complete every rinse the machine requests. Descaling clears limescale from internal water circuits; it does not replace cleaning milk parts, the brew unit or removable trays.
Before you start: check the model instructions
Find the model number and consult its instruction manual. De’Longhi says procedures and water-hardness settings vary by machine, and recommends following the machine’s prompts. Its general descaling guide is useful for understanding the process, but its quantities and timing are examples—not universal specifications.
- Start when the machine prompts you, or when the manual directs.
- Check whether the manual says to remove the water filter, attach a water spout, or prepare a milk carafe or steam wand.
- Use the specified descaler and prepare the collection container size required by your model.
- Allow time to complete the full cycle, including all rinse stages; do not stop when the descaling solution has finished running.
De’Longhi’s illustrated general process uses 100 ml of EcoDecalk to the tank’s level A mark, then water to level B, and calls for a container holding at least 2 L. The manufacturer says that example may take 30–50 minutes depending on the model. Do not apply those measurements to your machine unless its instructions agree.
How to descale a De’Longhi coffee maker
- Prepare the machine. Empty the drip tray and grounds container if the manual or display requests it. Remove the water filter if instructed, and empty the tank.
- Mix the descaler in the tank. Use the product and amount specified in your manual. Add water to the indicated mark; do not guess a dose or substitute a tank level from another model.
- Position a container. Put a heat-safe container of the specified capacity beneath the outlets named in the instructions. Some models require a water spout to be attached.
- Start the guided cycle. Use the screen menu or button sequence for your model and follow the prompts. For example, the Eletta Explore procedure begins in the settings menu and includes preparation steps for the tray, grounds container and filter. The Linea Classic EM450 FAQ has its own indicator and setup instructions.
- Complete every rinse. Empty and refill the tank or container when prompted, and let the machine finish its rinse sequence. Follow the manual if it calls for more than one rinse.
- Restore the machine. Refit the filter or accessories if the manual directs, then empty and rinse the drip tray and other parts used during the process.
Model-specific figures illustrate why the manual matters: the Rivelia manual recommends a 1.5 L container and describes a guided process of approximately 30 minutes. These specifications apply to Rivelia, not to every De’Longhi machine.

What descaler should you use? Can you use vinegar?
De’Longhi recommends its own descaler, such as EcoDecalk/Decalk Care, and its fully automatic cleaning FAQ says, “Use the DeLonghi descaler and never vinegar!” The company also cautions that vinegar may leave an odor and could affect components. This is the manufacturer’s guidance; follow the product label and your model’s manual rather than assuming another formula is suitable.
De’Longhi’s Rivelia instructions warn that unsuitable descaler or incorrect descaling may result in faults not covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. That warning is specific to the manual’s context; check your own warranty and instructions.

How often should you descale?
There is no single interval that fits every De’Longhi coffee maker. The manufacturer says frequency depends on water hardness and how often you brew. Follow the machine’s alert and, where supported, set water hardness accurately using the manual’s instructions. A compatible water filter may help slow limescale formation on machines that support one.
De’Longhi describes slower heating or brewing, changes in crema or coffee flavor, and possible blockages or malfunctions as effects of limescale buildup. These are possible signs, not a reliable diagnosis by themselves; use the machine’s alert and instructions to decide when to descale.

Cleaning tasks that are separate from descaling
Descaling treats the internal water circuit. Milk residue and removable parts need their own care routine, and the exact parts, cleaning products and dishwasher guidance depend on the model.
Milk carafe and steam wand
Clean milk parts promptly after use. De’Longhi’s UK care guide advises using the carafe’s clean function or the machine’s cleaning button. For a manual steam wand, wipe it with a damp cloth and briefly release steam after use. Separate and clean carafe or wand parts regularly as directed by the manual. Eco MultiClean is a separate option for milk residue; it is not descaler and does not belong in the descaling cycle.

Removable brew unit
For fully automatic models with a removable brew unit, De’Longhi’s care guide recommends removing it monthly, rinsing it under warm water and allowing it to dry. The guide says not to use detergent or solvent on the brew unit. Check your manual before removing anything, because not every machine has the same removable parts or care instructions.
Drip tray and grounds container
Empty and clean these as indicated by the machine and manual. They may need attention before descaling if prompted, and should be rinsed after the cycle if they collected descaler or rinse water.
