Choose memory based on the workload you expect to keep active, and choose storage based on how much you plan to keep on the Mac itself. The M5 MacBook Air starts with 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD; Apple lists higher memory and storage options, but the right combination depends on your needs—not a universal threshold. Here’s how to compare the choices.

What configurations does the M5 MacBook Air offer?

Apple’s current MacBook Air technical specifications list 16GB of unified memory as the starting configuration, with options for 24GB or 32GB depending on the model. Storage starts at 512GB and can be configured to 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB; the exact options vary by model. Apple’s technical specifications are the reference for the available combinations.

Component Options listed by Apple What to consider
Unified memory 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB, depending on model How demanding your expected active workload is
Internal SSD 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB, depending on model How much you want available locally for apps and files

Memory and storage serve different purposes. Memory supports the work you are doing, while the SSD holds applications and files you keep on the computer. Apple lists an M5 10-core CPU and 153GB/s memory bandwidth in its specifications; these are product specifications, not independent performance results or proof that a particular memory tier is right for a particular person.

How much memory should you choose?

Choose 16GB if the standard configuration fits your expected use

16GB is the listed starting point. If you are unsure whether to pay for more, consider the applications and tasks you expect to use at the same time, and whether your typical work is likely to become more demanding during the period you keep the Mac. The available specifications do not establish a universal workload threshold or show that a named profession or application requires a specific tier.

Compare 24GB and 32GB against your workload

The 24GB and 32GB options provide higher memory capacities, where offered. They are worth comparing if you expect to run a demanding active workload, but Apple’s published specifications alone do not quantify the performance difference between tiers. There is no sourced benchmark here that identifies a universally best choice. Check which capacities are available for the exact screen size and model you plan to buy.

How much internal storage should you choose?

Start with the amount of data you expect to keep on the Mac, rather than relying on a generic rule of thumb. Think about your applications, documents, photos, video, downloads, and project files, and whether you want those files available without an external drive or network connection.

  • 512GB: The starting SSD capacity. Compare it with the local files and apps you expect to keep.
  • 1TB: A higher internal capacity if your anticipated local library or projects call for more room.
  • 2TB or 4TB: Larger options for buyers who expect to keep more data on the Mac itself; confirm availability for the model you select.

Apple’s March 2026 announcement says the M5 MacBook Air starts with 512GB and can be configured up to 4TB. Apple described 512GB as double the prior generation’s starting storage. That announcement is about the model’s launch configuration, not a statement about how much storage any particular buyer needs. Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement has the launch details.

Can an external SSD replace a larger internal SSD?

Apple lists Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, so an external SSD is a separate option for storing large local files. It does not increase the capacity of the internal SSD, and files on an external drive are not on the Mac when that drive is disconnected. Apple’s specifications do not establish performance for a particular drive, so compare the drive and your workflow separately if external storage is part of your plan.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Choose a screen size. Decide between the 13-inch and 15-inch model, then check which memory and SSD options are offered for that model.
  2. Decide on memory independently. Compare 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB with the active workload you expect; do not treat storage capacity as a substitute for memory.
  3. Estimate local storage needs. Consider which apps and files you want stored on the Mac and compare that with the available 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities.
  4. Price the exact configuration. Use current prices for the model and capacities you selected. Apple’s March 2026 starting prices do not establish today’s upgrade premiums or retailer prices.
  5. Consider external storage separately. If large files can live on a separate drive, compare that workflow with buying more internal SSD capacity, keeping in mind that the drive is separate from the Mac’s internal storage.
