To get more reliable readings from a phone thermal camera, let the attachment stabilize, use its calibration or non-uniformity correction (NUC) control as directed, and enter realistic target settings—especially emissivity and reflected apparent temperature. A shutter click is an internal detector correction, not proof that the camera has been formally calibrated or that its temperature estimate is accurate.

What “calibration” means on a phone thermal camera

The word calibration can mean two different things. On many thermal cameras, it refers to an internal shutter event called non-uniformity correction, or NUC. It helps correct differences in how detector elements respond so the image appears more uniform. It does not, by itself, verify the accuracy of the temperature shown for an object.

FLIR’s FLIR ONE manual describes a mechanical shutter that activates during calibration and makes a clicking sound; its app also provides a way to initiate calibration manually. Follow the instructions for your exact attachment, since other brands may use different names or controls. FLIR ONE user manuals and support

Formal instrument calibration is different: it relates instrument indications to measurement standards under specified conditions. FLIR reproduces the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) definition on its calibration page. A camera’s app shutter action is not a user-performed, traceable calibration. If you need documented measurement accuracy, follow the manufacturer’s formal calibration process or consult a qualified calibration provider. FLIR: What is calibration?

How to get a more reliable reading

  1. Check the exact attachment manual. Find its instructions for warm-up or stabilization, calibration/NUC, and measurement settings. Availability and labels for emissivity, reflected temperature, distance, and other controls vary by model.
  2. Let the camera stabilize as directed. Environmental changes and the device’s operating state can affect readings. Use the stabilization time specified in its manual rather than assuming every attachment behaves alike.
  3. Run the calibration/NUC control when appropriate. Keep the camera pointed at the scene and use the manufacturer’s control when the app requests it or the manual recommends it—for example, before recording a measurement sequence if that guidance applies. The shutter event improves image uniformity; it does not certify temperature accuracy.
  4. Set emissivity for the surface. Emissivity describes how effectively a surface emits infrared energy. Select a known value or a reasonable estimate when your app allows it. FLIR identifies emissivity as a particularly important measurement parameter. FLIR measurement guidance
  5. Consider reflected apparent temperature. A thermal camera can receive infrared energy reflected by the target as well as energy emitted from it. This matters especially for reflective, low-emissivity surfaces such as bare shiny metal. Set the reflected-temperature parameter if available and if you can estimate it reliably; do not assume the camera is seeing only the object’s own temperature. FLIR measurement guidance
  6. Keep the setup consistent. Use a close, repeatable distance, similar viewing angle, and the same target area for comparisons. At longer distances, the air between the camera and target has more influence, so atmospheric compensation becomes more relevant. FLIR measurement guidance
  7. Avoid measuring through ordinary glass. Standard glass is not transparent to the long-wave infrared radiation used by these cameras. If you must measure through an infrared window or barrier, the camera must support compensation for that material and be configured with the appropriate properties. FLIR measurement guidance
  8. Repeat comparable measurements. For a temperature trend, measure the same spot with the same settings and geometry. Record relevant conditions and uncertainty rather than reporting more precision than the setup supports.

Why a reading can seem wrong

The surface is reflective or has low emissivity

A shiny metal surface can reflect infrared energy from nearby objects, people, or the environment. The displayed value may therefore be influenced by those reflections rather than representing the surface temperature alone. A high-emissivity reference patch can help with a controlled emissivity-estimation method, but only when the patch is suitable, firmly attached, and at the same temperature as the target. It is not a universal shortcut for household measurements. FLIR emissivity-estimation guidance

The target is too small or too far away

The camera needs enough of the target in its measurement area to produce a useful estimate. If the target occupies only a small part of the image, surrounding surfaces can affect the result. Distance also increases the influence of the intervening atmosphere. Compare readings only when distance and target framing are consistent, and use atmospheric settings when your model supports them and the measurement path warrants it. FLIR measurement guidance

The camera is looking through a window

Ordinary window glass blocks or alters the infrared signal the camera is designed to detect. A reading taken through it should not be treated as a direct measurement of the object behind it. A purpose-made thermal window may be usable only if the camera supports the needed temperature and transmission compensation and those settings are configured.

The internal correction is being mistaken for accuracy

A shutter click or a more even-looking thermal image indicates an internal correction event, not that the camera has checked its temperature estimate against a known reference. Target properties, reflected surroundings, distance, and other scene conditions still affect the displayed number.

Starting values are defaults, not a universal recipe

For users who do not know the correct inputs, a FLIR general camera manual gives these recommended starting values: emissivity 0.95, reflected temperature 20°C (69°F), object distance 1.0 m (3.3 ft.), atmospheric temperature 20°C (69°F), and relative humidity 50%. They are defaults for the camera family covered by that manual, not a universal phone-camera calibration recipe. Replace them with known or better-estimated conditions when possible. FLIR camera manual: recommended measurement values

Can you trust the temperature number?

Treat it as an estimate of surface temperature whose reliability depends on the camera and the conditions—not as a universal ground truth. Internal NUC can improve image uniformity, but it does not establish that a displayed temperature is correct for every surface. The manufacturer documentation cited here does not establish one accuracy tolerance that applies to all phone thermal attachments. Check the exact model’s manual for its stated range and accuracy specification, and use a calibrated reference instrument or qualified calibration service when the measurement must meet a defined tolerance.
