Before paying for a discounted game console, confirm the listing is for the exact model and condition you want, verify that the seller has the actual unit, and check how it works, what is included, and what happens if it arrives faulty. Then confirm the return terms, warranty, and marketplace protection for that exact transaction. A low price alone does not show that a listing is safe or a good value.
Start with the seller, listing, and actual console
- Check the seller and marketplace. Read recent feedback, look for contact details, and search independently for complaints. Star ratings are only one signal. Confirm the marketplace’s refund process applies to this item and seller, and ask any questions before paying. Keep the answers in writing.
- Check whether the photos show the unit for sale. Look for multiple clear views, including ports, controls, labels, and accessories. Stock images do not show the console’s condition or establish that the seller has that particular unit.
- Read the full description. Verify the exact platform and model, whether the console is new, refurbished, used, or sold as-is, which accessories are included, and whether the seller discloses damage or a known fault. Treat condition labels as a starting point, not a substitute for the seller’s actual description and terms.
PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends buying new PlayStation products from authorized retailers to help ensure functionality, authenticity, return policy, and warranty coverage. That is PlayStation-specific guidance; do not assume a seller is authorized or that another manufacturer has the same policy without checking.
Check that a used console works and can access services
For a used console, ask for a demonstration or video of it powering on and, where relevant, connecting to the internet. A device that turns on may still have faults or a service-access problem.
PlayStation-specific checks
PlayStation’s US guide recommends checking ports, buttons, image quality, overheating, physical damage, warranty seals, and serial numbers. If the model has a disc drive, check that too. The guide also advises confirming the console’s PlayStation service access and that the seller has deactivated it and no longer has access. These are manufacturer recommendations for PlayStation, not established inspection instructions for Xbox or Nintendo systems.

PlayStation warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from accessing PlayStation services. Ask the seller about the console’s history and service access; a video of it powering on does not by itself resolve this risk.
Separate warranty, returns, and buyer protection
These are different forms of recourse. A manufacturer or seller warranty covers the product under its terms; a return policy sets when and how the item can be sent back; marketplace buyer protection may refund an eligible transaction if its conditions are met. Check each one for the exact console, condition category, seller, and purchase method.

- Confirm the return deadline, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee or sale-item exclusion applies. The FTC notes that sale items can have stricter return terms.
- Check the manufacturer’s and seller’s warranty terms for the exact model and whether the item is new, certified refurbished, or used.
- Confirm the marketplace protection’s eligibility rules, claim deadline, and required checkout and payment method. Do not assume it covers every seller or listing.
For PlayStation in the US, the buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty; its asterisk notes that certified refurbished PlayStation products include warranty. Do not extend that guidance to other brands, countries, sellers, or product categories. eBay’s published Money Back Guarantee policy says the guarantee is not a product warranty and requires eligible checkout and payment on eBay.com. Check the current policy and listing terms at purchase time.
Pay safely and keep a record
The FTC recommends safer methods such as a credit card or an online payment system that offers buyer protection. Pay through the marketplace’s protected checkout rather than moving the transaction off-platform; an off-platform payment may remove marketplace protections. Do not pay by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency. Save the listing, receipt, seller messages, and any demonstration or condition details in case you need to make a claim.

Online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the FTC in 2022, according to the agency’s 2023 consumer alert. Compare listings for the same model and configuration, not just the headline price. Include shipping and fees, condition, demonstrated functionality, included components, warranty, seller reputation, return costs, and whether buyer protection actually applies. The available sources do not establish a current console price benchmark or a universal discount threshold that signals a bargain or a scam.

Use the listing’s complete description and terms when making the comparison. A label such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is,” or “close-out” does not by itself establish the item’s condition or the protections you receive.
