Measure an AI-assisted SOC workflow by comparing a defined, incident-specific baseline with post-launch results—and assess speed and analyst workload alongside detection quality, service health, and data-pipeline performance. A faster workflow is not an improvement if it misses more threats, processes fewer events, or shifts work into untracked review and rework.
There is no established universal percentage by which AI-powered SOC workflows reduce response time, alert volume, or analyst effort. The useful result is evidence about a particular workflow, incident mix, and operating environment.
What exactly should the measurement cover?
Start by bounding the workflow, not by choosing dashboard metrics. Record which alert or incident classes are in scope, which stages change, what the AI recommends or executes, and where an analyst must review or approve an action. State what remains manual and what is out of scope.
This boundary matters because “AI-assisted SOC” can describe very different changes: summarizing an alert for an analyst, recommending a disposition, or automatically closing a case. Their risks and appropriate quality checks differ. Treat the workflow as a socio-technical system: outcomes depend on the model and tools, but also on analysts, runbooks, incident mix, telemetry, staffing, and service conditions.

For each metric, document its precise definition before collecting results. Specify the start and stop events for time measures, exclusions, how reopened cases count, the population and period, and whether a number is a count, rate, median, or mean. Apply the same definitions before and after deployment.
Which operational metrics belong together?
Microsoft Learn’s cybersecurity and SOC agent blueprint names MTTD, MTTR, incident-report turnaround, analyst hours per incident, and audit-cycle time as primary KPIs. It also recommends recording baseline MTTD and MTTR by incident type, incidents per analyst per week, and audit-cycle time before go-live. Add workflow-specific measures—such as analyst minutes per case or time spent reviewing and reworking AI output—when they expose work the broader KPIs would miss.

| Measurement area | What to track | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | MTTD, MTTR, incident-report turnaround, and audit-cycle time; define each clock’s start and stop. | Whether detection, response, reporting, or audit work changed for the defined case population. |
| Workload | Analyst hours per incident, incidents per analyst per week, and—where useful—analyst minutes spent per case, review, and rework. | Whether effort was reduced, shifted to another stage, or increased through review and correction. |
| Triage and detection quality | Reviewed true and false positives, missed or incorrectly closed cases, and the accuracy of escalations. | Whether throughput or speed changed without concealing harmful classification errors. |
| Response quality | Quality of response actions, analyst overrides, rework, and incidents associated with the workflow. | Whether the workflow’s recommendations or actions were useful and safe in practice. |
| Platform and data health | Tool availability, event-processing success, sensor and feed health, source-to-ingest and ingest-to-persistence latency, and detection coverage. | Whether the measured outcomes reflect workflow performance or a change in the underlying pipeline. |
MITRE’s SOC guidance includes analyst-tagged true/false-positive ratios and escalations that later proved true positive. It also identifies internal measures such as SOC tool health, successful event processing, sensor and feed health, pipeline latency, and detection coverage. Its 2022 guide gives illustrative examples of 99.5% tool uptime, 99% of events successfully processed, and five minutes median source-to-ingest latency. These are examples in that guide—not universal requirements or AI-workflow success thresholds. Set local limits according to your environment and the impact of a failure.
How do you tell efficiency gains from quality failures?
Review triage decisions against confirmed outcomes, not just model output or the number of alerts that reach analysts. A lower analyst alert count could mean better filtering, but it could also mean a feed stopped, fewer events were processed, or real threats were suppressed.

- Track reviewed true positives and false positives using consistent case definitions.
- Record cases that were missed, incorrectly closed, or later found to warrant escalation.
- Validate AI dispositions against human-confirmed outcomes, with particular attention to automatically closed or suppressed alerts.
- Sample alerts that did not reach an analyst; preserve an explicit measure of harmful misses rather than inferring detection quality from volume.
- Log analyst overrides, corrections, rework, and response errors alongside time saved.
Sampling is especially important when a workflow suppresses or closes cases without human review. If a case cannot be verified from available evidence, label that uncertainty rather than treating the AI disposition as a confirmed outcome.
How should you establish a credible before-and-after comparison?
- Bound the workflow. Specify alert classes, affected stages, AI recommendations or actions, analyst approval points, and exclusions.
- Define outcomes and denominators. Write down how each time, workload, quality, and health measure is calculated. Report counts and rates with the population and observation period they describe.
- Capture a baseline. Before go-live, collect relevant measures by incident type. Record staffing, case mix, telemetry sources, workflow and detection changes, and service health alongside them.
- Compare like with like. Use consistent case definitions and a consistent post-launch window. Where feasible, compare the AI-assisted workflow with a contemporaneous manual or simpler-workflow group.
- Review cases and uncertainty. Check AI decisions against confirmed outcomes and document gaps in the evidence or limits on applying results to other incident classes or operating conditions.
- Set limits and actions in advance. Define acceptable local ranges for the chosen measures and specify what happens if a limit is crossed—for example, reverting automation, increasing human review, or retuning the workflow.
- Monitor and revise. Reassess as data, models, operating settings, or user needs change. Include analyst feedback and incident reviews in the measurement process.
A before-and-after change is not automatically caused by AI. If staffing, alert mix, data quality, security controls, or runbooks changed at the same time, show those changes and be cautious about attribution. A concurrent comparison can help, but its findings still apply most directly to the workflow and conditions actually evaluated.

How should results guide operational decisions?
Choose metrics for the decisions they inform, rather than because they are easy to display. NIST’s AI RMF Measure guidance states: “What should be measured depends on the purpose, audience, and needs of the evaluations.” It emphasizes fit-for-purpose evaluation, acceptable limits, documentation of risks that cannot be measured, and regular reassessment of measurement approaches.
Use a results review to decide whether to continue, constrain, revise, or roll back the workflow. A limit breach should trigger the action agreed in advance, not an improvised interpretation of a dashboard. Review uncertainty and operational context with the numbers, and retain documentation of validation, reliability, safety, security, resilience, and the conditions under which the workflow was evaluated.

- Milwaukee Ink all Fine Point Marker, Black, 4 Per Pack
- 4 per pack Features Clog Resistant Marker Tip Writes through Dusty, Wet and Oily Surfaces Durable Marker Tip for Writing on Concrete, OSB and Rough Surfaces
- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete

- Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking
Do not equate time saved with value unless quality is maintained. Likewise, fewer alerts do not establish better detection unless suppressed cases and false negatives are checked. A vendor example or product description may explain how a workflow is intended to work, but it is not an independent estimate of results in your SOC.
