Evaluate an AI SOC platform by testing whether it can complete your team’s real workflows, use the data and actions your tools actually expose, and keep analysts in control. A polished demo or long integration list is not enough: define a representative workload, inspect the permissions and handoffs, and measure results against criteria agreed in advance.
Start with the work your SOC needs done
List recurring tasks before comparing products: alert triage, incident investigation, evidence enrichment, threat-intelligence gathering, reporting, and any remediation your organization is prepared to authorize. For each task, describe the trigger, required context, expected output, systems involved, and decisions that must remain with a person.
Then ask each vendor to demonstrate the same representative workflow from start to finish. Distinguish among an analyst-started interaction, a repeatable multi-step process, an event-triggered workflow, and a scheduled run. These modes have different operating and oversight requirements; a platform that answers questions in a chat is not necessarily able to carry out a repeatable workflow.
- Trigger: What starts the work, and can an analyst also start it manually?
- Inputs: Which alerts, logs, identity records, threat data, or case details are available to the workflow?
- Process: Which tools are invoked, in what sequence, and what happens if a step fails or returns incomplete data?
- Output: Does the system produce an explanation, a case update, a recommendation, or an action in another system?
- Human checkpoint: At what point can an analyst inspect, correct, approve, or stop the work?
As one documented example, Microsoft Security Copilot distinguishes agents, prompts, promptbooks, plugins, and connectors. Its workflow guidance describes agents as suited to automation and repeatable tasks, promptbooks as reusable multi-step prompt sequences, plugins as sources of data or actions, and connectors as mechanisms that can trigger agents, run prompts, or start automation workflows. Microsoft’s FAQ also describes Logic Apps and Copilot Studio connectors as ways to submit prompts or promptbooks into workflows. These are product-specific descriptions, not a taxonomy that every competing platform uses.

Test integrations for usable data and actions
Make an inventory of the systems the workflow must touch: SIEM, endpoint and identity tools, threat-intelligence sources, ticketing, SOAR or other workflow automation, and cloud services. A connector name or vendor logo does not establish that the platform can read the specific data or perform the action your SOC needs.
For each required integration, have the vendor show the actual workflow and record:
- What records or fields the platform can retrieve, including whether it can access the context needed to investigate a case.
- Whether the integration is read-only or can also create, update, or act on records.
- Which API, authentication method, identity, and permissions are involved.
- How context moves between tools, and whether the receiving system gets the information an analyst needs.
- How errors, access denials, stale data, and partial results are surfaced to the user.
Microsoft describes Security Copilot plugins as connections to Microsoft and non-Microsoft services through APIs that can provide data or actions. Its documented integrations include Defender XDR, Sentinel, Intune, Entra, Purview, and supported third-party services. Treat those as examples of documented product capabilities rather than proof that a particular integration supports your required data, action, or handoff. Microsoft also says that products integrated with Security Copilot must be purchased separately.

Require analyst oversight that works in practice
Oversight should be visible in the product, not just promised in a policy document. During the demonstration, ask an analyst to inspect the evidence used, review the output, correct a mistake, and stop or reject a proposed action. Find out what the interface shows before, during, and after a workflow: source material, tools invoked, action rationale where available, and the status of any proposed or completed change.
Set approval boundaries according to impact. A summary or draft report may need a different control from disabling an account, isolating an endpoint, or changing a security policy. For consequential actions, establish who can approve, whether approval is required every time, and whether the action can be reversed. Confirm how the system behaves when the designated approver is unavailable.
Microsoft’s Security Copilot application card says users should review and verify AI-generated responses because they may be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or misaligned with the user’s goal. It describes agents ranging from prompt-and-response experiences to semi-autonomous workflows with human oversight; the actions an agent can take depend on configured permissions and may require suitable user or administrator approval. Microsoft’s planning guidance recommends transparency about sources, memory, limitations, and the tools or data informing an action. These are useful evaluation questions for any product, but Microsoft’s statements describe its own guidance and capabilities.

Inspect identity, permissions, and agent controls
Ask who or what the agent acts as. A dedicated agent identity and an inherited user identity can expose different access and accountability risks. Review the configuration rather than relying on a general description of the security model.
- Can administrators see and change the agent’s identity, permissions, triggers, and enabled plugins?
- Are roles limited to the data and actions required for the workflow?
- Can access be separated by team or duty, and is there an approval process for privileged setup?
- What activity is recorded for audit, and can the organization pause or disable the agent?
- Who owns periodic reviews of permissions and workflow behavior?
Microsoft documents agent identities, permissions, triggers, plugins, required products, and role-based access for Security Copilot. It recommends least-privilege roles and says setup for some partner-built agents that access Microsoft tools or data requires tenant Global Administrator approval. Confirm the exact approval path, audit record, and controls available in the product and configuration you are evaluating; these details can vary by agent and setup.

Do not assign numeric weights or declare a market winner unless you have comparable, controlled evidence to support that conclusion. A feature checklist can identify gaps; it cannot by itself show that one system performs better on your cases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a proof of value with measures agreed in advance
Choose a representative workload, such as alert triage or investigation, and define the evaluation before the vendor runs it. Include normal cases as well as cases with missing, ambiguous, or conflicting evidence. Have analysts review the outputs and record exceptions so that a convincing single example does not stand in for dependable performance.
Potential measures include analyst handling time, the proportion of cases requiring correction, escalation quality, and the rate of inappropriate actions. Define each measure precisely: what counts as handling time, what qualifies as a correction, and who judges escalation quality. Microsoft’s planning guide recommends defining success measures such as reduced triage time or improved detection accuracy, but it does not publish independent results for those outcomes. Treat vendor-provided capabilities and intended benefits as hypotheses to test, not as measured proof of improvement.

Include usage limits and product dependencies in the decision
Ask how the product is licensed and how usage is consumed for the workflows you expect to run. Clarify dependencies on separately purchased products, compute or usage capacity, token or context limits, and how large prompts, long sessions, or plugin output can affect results. Ask vendors to demonstrate what users see when a limit is reached and what options remain.
For Microsoft Security Copilot specifically, Microsoft says agents use Security Compute Units (SCUs), integrated products require separate purchase, and token limits can affect results when prompts, sessions, or plugin output are large. Its FAQ states that IoT/OT recommendations are not currently supported. These are time-sensitive product details, not general characteristics of AI SOC platforms; verify current commercial terms and supported scenarios with the vendor for your intended deployment.
Separate capability claims from evidence of outcomes
Vendor documentation can establish that a feature is described, supported, or available under particular conditions. It does not, by itself, establish that the feature reduces workload, speeds response, or improves detection in your environment. For outcome claims, look for evidence that names the publisher and date, describes the sample and methodology, and reports the measured result. If that evidence is unavailable, keep the conclusion limited to what your own controlled evaluation demonstrates.
Microsoft’s published documentation is useful for understanding its product’s stated workflows and controls, but it is vendor-authored. The material available for this comparison does not establish independent, cross-vendor performance rankings or current market pricing. A sound selection therefore rests on the same use cases, criteria, and review method applied to every candidate.
