Choose the MacBook Air M5 for a capable everyday laptop if you do not need the Pro’s XDR display, extra Thunderbolt ports, or higher-tier chip options. Choose a specific MacBook Pro if one of those features matters to your work. “MacBook Pro” covers several screen sizes and M5 Pro or M5 Max configurations, so compare the exact model—not just the family name.
Which MacBook should you buy?
- Choose the MacBook Air M5 if portability and everyday work are your priorities, and its display and two-port selection suit your setup.
- Choose a MacBook Pro if you specifically want a Liquid Retina XDR display, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, or an M5 Pro or M5 Max chip tier.
These are feature-based recommendations, not a claim that one laptop is faster in measured tests. The available comparison does not establish independent head-to-head benchmark results.
Which models are you comparing?
Apple’s current lineup includes 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air M5 models, a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro or M5 Max. Specify the Pro’s screen size and chip tier before comparing configurations; the family name alone does not identify one set of specifications.
How do the displays and ports differ?
| Feature | MacBook Air M5 | MacBook Pro M5 Pro or M5 Max |
|---|---|---|
| Display sizes and class | 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch Liquid Retina | 14.2-inch or 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR |
| Thunderbolt ports | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports | Three Thunderbolt 5 ports |
The Pro’s XDR display class and additional Thunderbolt port can be decisive if they fit your work or multi-peripheral setup. If not, those features may not justify choosing a Pro for your needs. The listed specifications do not establish a general performance advantage.

How should you compare battery life and configurations?
Apple lists battery life of up to 18 hours for the MacBook Air M5 and up to 24 hours for some MacBook Pro M5 Pro configurations. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed runtimes: Apple says actual battery life varies by use and configuration. Check the exact model and configuration when weighing the figures.
Compare the memory and storage you would actually buy on each side, along with screen size and chip tier. The chip names identify product tiers; they are not independent benchmark results, and this comparison does not support a measured speed claim.

What about the Pro’s recycled-content figure?
Apple’s 2026 Product Environmental Report for the MacBook Pro M5 Pro or M5 Max family reports 45% recycled content. This is a sustainability figure for that covered family, not a measure of performance or a claim about every MacBook model. Apple dates the family’s introduction to March 3, 2026.
