Which controller should you use for TEKKEN 8?
Choose based on comfort, preferred layout, and platform compatibility—not an assumed performance advantage. Bandai Namco’s official sources establish which specific controllers it lists and what control styles the game offers; they do not show that an arcade stick, leverless controller, or gamepad makes players faster or more accurate.
- Use a standard gamepad if you are comfortable moving and reaching the attack buttons on one you already own.
- Consider an arcade stick if you prefer a joystick for direction and larger, separate buttons for attacks.
- Consider a leverless controller if you prefer directional buttons rather than a stick or gamepad directional pad. Confirm that the exact model works on your platform; the official compatibility list does not confirm specific leverless models.
A different layout takes practice. If you are new to the game, TEKKEN 8’s Special Style gives you a way to try recommended moves and combos using the controller you have before deciding whether you want different hardware.

Bandai Namco’s compatibility page lists these combinations. Compatibility for a named device on one platform should not be taken as confirmation for other devices, adapters, or systems.

How do the controller layouts differ?
Standard gamepad
A gamepad combines directional input and face buttons in a compact handheld layout. It is a practical starting choice when its directional controls and button reach already feel familiar. Comfort is personal, so consider whether you can reach the attacks and combinations you use without awkward hand positioning.

Arcade stick
An arcade stick separates direction on a joystick from attacks on larger buttons. Bandai Namco specifically lists the TEKKEN 7 Arcade Stick for PlayStation 4 as compatible with PS5 and Steam. That listing does not establish support for every arcade stick or guarantee compatibility on Xbox Series X|S.
Leverless controller
A leverless controller replaces a joystick with buttons for directional input. It is an alternative layout, not a proven shortcut to better results. The official compatibility list cited here does not name particular leverless devices, so check the exact controller’s platform support rather than assuming that a model will work.

Why do button placement and reach matter?
Bandai Namco’s control overview identifies separate left-punch, right-punch, left-kick, and right-kick inputs, along with combined throw inputs and controls for Heat and Rage actions. The variety of inputs makes button placement and reach sensible factors to consider, but it does not show that one layout is superior.
Try the layout you are considering and notice whether you can move and reach the attacks and mapped actions comfortably. If you play on more than one platform, check compatibility separately for each one.

Can you try different controls without changing controllers?
Yes. TEKKEN 8 offers Arcade Style and Special Style, and players can switch between them during a battle, according to Bandai Namco’s official battle guide.
- Arcade Style is the game’s original control style. Bandai Namco describes it as “The original control style for skilled players who want greater freedom”.
- Special Style assigns recommended moves and combos to attack buttons. Bandai Namco describes it as a way to experience signature aerial combos and situation-specific actions “at the push of a single button”.
These are the publisher’s descriptions of the modes, not independent assessments of who should use them. Special Style can help a new player explore recommended actions without first changing hardware; it is not established as a replacement for Arcade Style for every player.

What should you check before buying or entering an event?
Before buying
- Identify the platform you will play on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam.
- Compare the exact controller model with Bandai Namco’s platform list. Do not infer support for an unlisted model from another controller’s compatibility.
- Choose the movement and attack layout that feels comfortable, allowing time to practice if it differs from the one you know.
Before an in-person tournament
Check the current rules for the specific event and test your button configuration before your match. The European Tekken Cup 2024 rules required players to check buttons before a match and prohibited configuration changes after it began; that requirement applies to that competition, not automatically to all tournaments.
