If The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask feels delayed or choppy on Switch, first identify which problem you are seeing: controller input lag, a network delay, or local visual stutter. They have different causes, and Nintendo’s published guidance does not establish a universal fix for this game’s performance.
What “lag” means in Majora’s Mask on Switch
The Switch version of Majora’s Mask runs through the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app. Nintendo announced its availability to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on February 25, 2022; the original game released for Nintendo 64 in 2000. Access requires a Nintendo Account and an active Expansion Pack membership. (Nintendo’s availability announcement)
- Input lag: A button press seems to take too long to produce an action. This points first to the controller and its response, though it does not by itself prove the controller is at fault.
- Network latency: Data sent or received over a network is delayed. This matters when the symptom involves online activity or connection instability; it is not the same as choppiness during local single-player play.
- Frame drops or stutter: The picture appears to hitch or move unevenly. That is a visual-performance symptom, not necessarily delayed controller input or a network issue.
Nintendo says the N64 collection can have “some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games.” That is a general caveat for the collection, not a Majora’s Mask-specific diagnosis or a measured frame-rate result. Nintendo’s cited material provides no authoritative numeric measurement of this game’s input latency, frame rate, or frame pacing. (Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online)
Start with a quick symptom check
Before changing settings or buying an accessory, note where the issue occurs and what it looks like. This comparison helps narrow the symptom; it is not a Nintendo-published test or a guaranteed fix.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Does delayed response occur in other Switch games, or only in Majora’s Mask?
- Which controller are you using, and does the delay affect every button or just one?
- Is the picture visibly stuttering, or does the game look smooth while actions arrive late?
- Does the problem happen during local play, or only when a network connection is involved?
Check the Nintendo 64 app and controller
Update Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo’s support guidance for incorrect button response or input lag with the Nintendo 64 Controller says to ensure the Nintendo 64 app is updated before starting a game from its library. Check for an available software update for the app, install it, then reopen the game. (Nintendo Support: Nintendo 64 Controller Buttons Do Not Respond Correctly)
If you use the Nintendo 64 Controller
Check the label on the back of the controller. Nintendo’s article specifically addresses the Nintendo 64 Controller, model HAC-043. If that is your controller and the issue persists after updating the app, follow Nintendo’s support guidance for the controller rather than assuming the game itself is responsible.

Compare with another controller you already own
If available, try another controller in the same situation. If the response changes, that is useful evidence that the controller or accessory may be involved; it does not guarantee that another controller will eliminate all perceived delay. Nintendo says control customization is supported and the N64-style controller is optional. An N64 Controller is not an established cure for emulation latency or frame drops. (Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online)
If one button or one controller consistently behaves differently, use Nintendo’s current controller support and service route. Avoid replacing parts based only on the impression of game-wide lag.

What to do about apparent frame drops
For visual stutter, note where it occurs and whether it happens again after closing and relaunching the game or updating the N64 app. These are basic observations that may help describe the issue, not confirmed performance fixes. Nintendo’s public information cited here does not give a Majora’s Mask-specific frame-rate figure, frame-pacing result, or list of areas with known drops.
Because Nintendo’s performance caveat applies broadly to the N64 collection, it is reasonable to recognize that presentation can differ from original hardware—but not to infer a particular cause, a specific FPS, or that a current defect has been fixed. If the symptom continues, report what you observed through Nintendo support, including when the stutter occurs and whether it reproduces after relaunching.

Use network troubleshooting only for online symptoms
If the issue is delayed online interaction or an unstable connection, Nintendo describes latency as delay in sending and receiving data over a network. Its guidance identifies slow internet service, weak wireless signal, interference, and slow or unresponsive network devices as possible causes. Test the Switch’s connection, check signal strength and potential interference, and inspect the network service and devices; retest after making a change. (Nintendo Support: Issues with Latency While Playing Online)
Those network checks are for network symptoms. Nintendo’s guidance does not say that improving Wi-Fi or changing a router fixes local rendering stutter in single-player Majora’s Mask.

Do not apply the NES low-latency setting to Majora’s Mask
Nintendo documents a low-latency mode for NES – Nintendo Classics, with guidance scoped to NES software and online play. The cited material does not establish that this setting applies to Majora’s Mask in the N64 app, so do not use it as an N64 troubleshooting recommendation. (Nintendo Support: Low-Latency Mode for Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics Games)
