Choose the JBL PartyBox 720 if your party needs to move away from a power outlet: it can run on two separately sold Battery 600 packs and has wheels, a handle, and IPX4 splash resistance. Choose the Sony ULT TOWER 10 for a home-party setup where an included wireless microphone, 360-degree party sound and lighting, or TV sound features matter more. Neither brand’s published information establishes a controlled sound-quality winner.

Which speaker fits your kind of party?

What matters most Better fit Why
Playing music away from an outlet JBL PartyBox 720 It supports two optional Battery 600 packs for up to 15 hours of playback, according to JBL; actual runtime varies with volume and audio content.
Karaoke without buying a microphone separately Sony ULT TOWER 10 Sony says a wireless microphone is included. JBL has two XLR inputs, but its compatible wireless microphone is an optional accessory.
360-degree presentation and TV use Sony ULT TOWER 10 Sony promotes 360-degree party sound and lighting and includes a TV Sound Booster feature.
Connecting DJ, microphone, or other live gear JBL PartyBox 720 Its dual XLR inputs support microphone, guitar, or DJ equipment connections.
Adding compatible speakers JBL PartyBox 720 JBL supports Auracast linking and says two 720 speakers can be paired for stereo.

These are differences in documented features, not proof that one speaker sounds better. The manufacturers’ materials do not provide a controlled head-to-head test.

Battery, portability, and outdoor use

JBL PartyBox 720: portable when you add batteries

JBL’s 2025 technical sheet says the PartyBox 720 can play for up to 15 hours with two Battery 600 packs, sold separately. JBL cautions that playback time varies with volume and audio content. Battery operation is therefore an optional setup, not a built-in battery included with the speaker. If you want untethered use, include the price and availability of two packs in your decision; JBL also lists a Battery 600 Duo accessory.

The speaker has an integrated handle and wheels to help move it. JBL specifies IPX4 splash resistance, which is not waterproofing and does not mean the speaker can be submerged. For an outdoor gathering, keep it protected from heavy rain and standing water.

#1 Best Overall
JBL PartyBox 720 - Battery-Powered Party Speaker - Black
  • Superior JBL Pro Sound: We’re cranking out 800 watts of JBL Pro Sound—loud, clean, and full of deep bass from those two massive 9” woofers. The tweeters keep the highs crisp and clear, so every track hits just right and the dance floor stays packed.
  • Futuristic lightshow: Mix all that epic sound with a lightshow to match—vibrant stars, flowing trails, and strobes that move with the beat. It’s a full-on vibe.
  • Up to 15 hours playtime: Keep the music going for up to 15 hours on a single charge. Need more juice? Swap in the backup batteries (sold separately) and keep it moving. Just need a quick boost? A 10-minute fast charge gets you up to 2 extra hours of playtime.
  • Ergonomic integrated handle and wider sturdy wheels: Taking the party outside just got easier—wider wheels roll smooth on rough ground, and the built-in handle makes it easy to grab and go.
  • IPX4 Splash proof: Whether we’re hanging in the park or chilling by the pool, the PartyBox 720 is IPX4 splash proof—so a little water is no big deal.

Sony ULT TOWER 10: plan for a home setup

Sony’s product information reviewed for this comparison does not establish battery-powered operation. Treat it as a plugged-in, home-use option unless Sony’s current specifications for your region say otherwise. The product is marketed for 360-degree party sound and lighting rather than off-grid operation.

Karaoke and connections

Sony includes a wireless microphone

Sony lists a wireless microphone in the ULT TOWER 10 package, making it the more ready-to-sing choice out of the box. Check the contents for the exact product and region when purchasing, since bundles can vary by retailer or market.

JBL offers inputs for live gear

The PartyBox 720 has two XLR inputs for microphones, guitar, or DJ gear. That flexibility can suit a host or performer bringing equipment, but JBL lists its compatible PartyBox Wireless Mic separately. Do not assume the JBL’s microphone arrangement is equivalent to Sony’s included wireless mic.

Sound, lights, and TV features

JBL specifies 800 W RMS (IEC60268), two 9-inch woofers, a 32 Hz–20 kHz frequency response, a beat-reactive lightshow, and Auracast connectivity in its 2025 technical sheet and product materials. These are manufacturer specifications and feature descriptions, not independent test results.

Sony emphasizes 360-degree party sound, 360-degree party lighting, and ULT bass modes. Its product FAQ also describes a seven-band equalizer and TV Sound Booster. Sony says TV Sound Booster optimizes the four front speaker components for combined use with a connected television. That makes the Sony a more explicitly multipurpose home-party and TV option on paper.

There is not enough comparable published measurement here to declare the Sony has stronger bass, the JBL is louder, or either one is the better-sounding speaker. Wattage, driver size, and marketing terms alone cannot establish a winner in a room.

Size and price to consider

JBL’s 2025 technical sheet lists the PartyBox 720 at 31 kg (68.3 lb) and 416 × 942 × 406 mm (W × H × D). Wheels and a handle help with repositioning, but the listed weight is worth considering if you expect to lift it into a car or up stairs.

On the official US product pages observed on October 7, 2026, JBL showed $1,099.95 for the PartyBox 720. Sony showed $899.99, discounted from a listed $1,199.99, for the ULT TOWER 10. These are time-sensitive US page prices, not fixed prices or promises of availability in other countries. The JBL battery packs are separate, while Sony lists its wireless microphone as included; check the current product and retailer bundle contents before comparing total cost.

Verdict: choose by setup, not a claimed sound-quality winner

For parties that need battery flexibility, movement between locations, or connections for live and DJ equipment, the JBL PartyBox 720 is the more practical fit—provided you budget for two Battery 600 packs if you need untethered playback. For a plugged-in home party where 360-degree sound and lighting, an included wireless karaoke microphone, and TV Sound Booster are appealing, choose the Sony ULT TOWER 10. The available manufacturer information supports those use-case distinctions, not a universal sound-quality ranking.
