Ledger did not become a lender when it announced Bitcoin-backed loans. On March 1, 2023, it announced that YouHodler, a separate lending provider, was available through Ledger Live’s Discover section. The arrangement offered a route to borrow against crypto without selling it at the outset, but the collateral remained exposed to price changes and provider-specific loan rules.
What Ledger announced—and who provides the loan
Ledger’s March 1, 2023 announcement described a Ledger Live integration with YouHodler. YouHodler was the named loan provider; Ledger Live provided access to the service. The announcement is not evidence that Ledger itself lent money, held collateral as lender, or guaranteed a borrower’s position. Ledger’s announcement and YouHodler’s launch release are dated March 1, 2023.
This consumer-facing announcement should not be confused with Ledger Enterprise’s separate September 1, 2026 announcement about Membrane Labs. That institutional integration is a different product; Ledger Enterprise says Ledger does not lend or act as counterparty in it. Ledger Enterprise’s announcement does not establish current terms or availability for the YouHodler service in Ledger Live.
How borrowing against Bitcoin works
With a crypto-backed loan, you pledge Bitcoin or another eligible crypto asset as collateral and receive money or another crypto asset, often a stablecoin. You have not sold the Bitcoin when the loan begins, so you retain exposure to its price—but you also owe principal and interest. If the collateral’s value falls while the debt remains, the loan becomes larger relative to the collateral.

The loan-to-value ratio (LTV) expresses the loan amount as a share of the collateral’s value. A higher starting LTV leaves less room for a price decline before the provider’s margin or liquidation rules may matter. Those rules are set by the lender and contract, not by the wallet used to access the service. Ledger’s overview of borrowing through DeFi also notes that lending approaches differ and advises evaluating the platform before committing.
What the 2023 announcement said about loan terms
Ledger’s March 1, 2023 post advertised a maximum LTV of up to 90%, collateral support for more than 45 crypto assets, and loan proceeds in EUR, USD, CHF, GBP, or stablecoins. These are claims made in that launch announcement—not confirmation of YouHodler’s current asset list, currencies, maximum LTV, rates, fees, or eligibility. The announcement does not establish whether the integration remains available in Ledger Live in 2026 or in any particular region.

The post described this access path:
- Connect a Ledger hardware wallet to Ledger Live.
- Open the Discover section and select YouHodler.
- Choose the collateral and the currency or asset to receive.
- Set the loan parameters.
That is the workflow described in the 2023 announcement, not a verified current interface walkthrough. It also does not prove that a Ledger hardware wallet is required for every way of applying for a YouHodler loan today. A Ledger device secures wallet keys; it does not make Ledger the lender or establish that pledged collateral stays under the borrower’s control.
Risks to check before pledging Bitcoin
Price declines and liquidation
If Bitcoin falls, collateral value can shrink while the loan balance remains, pushing LTV higher. Depending on the contract, a provider may require additional collateral or repayment, or may sell collateral under its liquidation rules. The 2023 launch announcement does not state YouHodler’s current margin-call or liquidation thresholds, warning process, timing, or fees. Do not infer a liquidation price from the advertised maximum LTV alone.

Custody and counterparty risk
Find out who controls the pledged Bitcoin after funding, whether the provider can lend or reuse it, and what protections apply if the provider fails. Connecting a hardware wallet to an app does not mean collateral remains in self-custody after it is pledged. The launch announcement does not spell out YouHodler’s collateral custody arrangement.
Interest, fees, repayment, and maturity
Compare the interest rate and how it accrues, origination and other fees, required payments, early repayment rules, loan term, maturity, renewal options, and consequences of default. These details determine the cost and what you must do to recover collateral; they cannot be inferred from the 2023 headline LTV.

Eligibility and tax treatment
Check the provider’s current supported countries, identity-verification requirements, and loan terms for your location before transferring collateral. Tax treatment also depends on jurisdiction and circumstances; the launch materials do not establish that borrowing is tax-free. Consult a qualified local tax professional for advice on your situation.

- LTV and price triggers: Starting LTV, margin-call threshold, liquidation threshold, and whether the provider can change them.
- Cost: Interest calculation, APR or equivalent disclosure, fees, and total repayment amount.
- Collateral control: Custodian, reuse or rehypothecation rights, and protections if the provider becomes insolvent.
- Ways to reduce risk: Whether you can add collateral or repay part of the loan, and how quickly those actions must be completed after a warning.
- Repayment conditions: Term, payment schedule, early repayment, maturity, renewal, and default consequences.
- Access: Eligible assets and countries, identity checks, and whether the service is actually available through the route you plan to use.
Terms from another lender can illustrate why provider-specific comparisons matter, but they are not substitutes for YouHodler’s contract. For example, Ledn’s current provider page and its Help Center describe Ledn’s own product; the Help Center says Ledn loans are typically issued at 50% LTV, usually have a 12-month term, accrue interest daily, and have no prepayment penalty.
