When electricity prices rise, a Bitcoin miner should compare the revenue expected from running with the avoidable cost of power and the value of any compensation available for reducing load. If shutting down or throttling equipment is worth more than mining through the price spike, curtailment may make sense. There is no universal electricity-price threshold: the decision depends on Bitcoin mining revenue, ASIC efficiency, power contracts, grid-program terms, and location.
How to decide whether to keep mining
Assess the economics for the period when prices are high, rather than relying on a fixed shutdown price. Compare expected mining revenue after operating costs with the cost of electricity that can actually be avoided by reducing load. Then compare that result with any curtailment credits or other grid-service compensation the site can earn.
- Estimate the value of running. Use expected mining revenue for the equipment and period in question; revenue changes with hashprice and other mining conditions.
- Calculate avoidable costs. Include the electricity cost the site will not incur if it throttles or shuts off, using the actual contract and settlement terms.
- Check the alternative value of reducing load. Account for eligible credits or other compensation, as well as program requirements and any ramp-down or restart costs.
- Choose the operating response. Continue running, reduce load, or curtail temporarily according to which permitted option has the stronger expected net value.
ERCOT’s 2024 analysis used average Antminer S19j Pro specifications and an assumed hashprice of $42.75 per PH/s per day to estimate an illustrative break-even electricity cost of $58.4/MWh for its February 2025 assessment. That scenario-specific estimate is not a current or industry-wide shutdown threshold; a different machine, revenue outlook, contract, or market arrangement changes the calculation. ERCOT’s analysis
Ways to respond to higher power prices
Throttle or shut down temporarily
Reducing load during an expensive period can be more valuable than continuing to mine, especially when curtailment compensation is available. The relevant comparison is between forgone mining revenue and the avoidable power cost plus any applicable credits, after considering operational costs and rules. Those ramp-down and restart costs vary by facility and are not quantified by the cited sources.

Riot Platforms describes its own manual-curtailment approach in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026: “We power down operations and return power to the utility when prevailing market electricity prices offer the potential for us to realize power curtailment credits in excess of the Bitcoin Mining revenues we would have otherwise generated.” That is Riot’s description of its operations, not a rule or guarantee for other miners. Enroll in demand response or grid-service programs
Some large flexible electricity users can receive compensation for reducing consumption under defined conditions. Eligibility, advance notice, metering, performance obligations, and settlement depend on the specific program and market rules; operators should check those terms before counting on revenue.

ERCOT announced a voluntary curtailment program for large flexible customers, including bitcoin mining facilities, on December 6, 2022. In that announcement, then-ERCOT President and CEO Pablo Vegas said: “These customers are large power users but have the flexibility and willingness to reduce their energy use quickly, if needed.” The announcement documents the program’s purpose at that time; it does not establish current enrollment or terms. Review power contracts and procurement
Power procurement choices can change how exposed a mining site is to price spikes. Company filings describe long-term power purchase agreements used alongside curtailment or demand-response strategies. A contract’s actual pricing, duration, flexibility, and settlement provisions matter: a long-term agreement does not automatically remove every form of price risk, and terms are not the same for every operator. Use load-management controls
Software and site controls can help operators adjust consumption as market prices or grid conditions change. Ionic Digital describes dynamic load management based on those signals in a 2026 filing. Improve fleet efficiency
More efficient ASICs can produce more mining work per unit of electricity, which may improve the economics of operating when power is costly. But replacing hardware has acquisition, deployment, cooling, and financing costs. Efficiency alone does not establish whether an upgrade will pay back, and the cited ERCOT example is not a current hardware ranking or purchase recommendation.

Consider site and energy-source economics
For a longer-term decision, location and energy supply can matter as much as operating controls. The U.S. Energy Information Administration notes that mining facilities may seek low-cost or stranded energy, including waste methane that might otherwise be flared, and may connect directly to a power source. Two facilities facing the same market price can reach different decisions because their equipment, revenue expectations, contracts, and ability to shed load differ. A short-lived price spike may justify temporary curtailment; persistently high costs can make procurement, efficiency, or site strategy more important. The relevant grid market also determines what compensation is available and which obligations apply.

A working paper by Subir Majumder, revised June 3, 2026, uses Texas market data and reports that mining load declines as electricity-sector costs rise, while higher hashprice moderates that response and shifts the implied curtailment threshold upward. This is evidence from a working paper and a particular market context, not a universal operating rule. Majumder’s working paper
What historical U.S. figures do—and do not—show
The EIA estimated that cryptocurrency mining used 0.6% to 2.3% of U.S. electricity consumption in a preliminary estimate published February 1, 2024. It also reported that ERCOT had enlisted up to 1,530 MW of large industrial consumers to curtail. These are dated estimates and program figures, not current measurements or verified enrollment totals. EIA said it had discontinued its emergency collection of cryptocurrency-mining survey data, so the electricity-use range should not be presented as a current reading. EIA’s February 2024 article
