Then check the game’s update and official system requirements, investigate drivers or compatibility, and test for software conflicts before considering repairs or new hardware. The right fix depends on when the problem occurs and what else it affects.
First, identify what is actually failing
Note what happens and when. A game that closes to the desktop, freezes, or stutters while Windows remains usable calls for a different investigation than a PC that restarts and displays a Windows stop code.
- Closes or freezes: Record any error message and whether the game reaches its menu or fails earlier.
- Stutters but stays open: Note whether it happens continuously or only in a particular scene or setting.
- Visual corruption: Record what the graphics look like and whether it occurs in other games.
- Windows restarts: Write down the stop code, if shown. Treat this as a system-level problem, not just a game crash.
Also record the game name, Windows version, and whether the issue began after a game, graphics-driver, or Windows update. These details help distinguish a title-specific problem from one affecting the whole PC.
Check the game update and official requirements
Install any available game update through its publisher or the platform where you obtained it. Then compare your PC with that game’s own published minimum and recommended requirements. Requirements differ by title, so do not assume a particular graphics card or amount of memory is necessary without checking the game’s official information.

If only one game has trouble while other demanding games work normally, prioritize that game’s updates, stated requirements, files, and publisher support. A problem affecting several games is more likely to involve something they share, such as a driver or Windows.
Investigate compatibility and display drivers
If the game stopped working after a Windows upgrade, first check for an app update. Microsoft also recommends its Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older apps; compatibility can be affected by changes in Windows architecture, security features, or system requirements. If a graphics problem began immediately after a display-driver update, the driver may be relevant. Get drivers through the PC maker’s supported update route or the graphics-device maker’s official support channel, as appropriate for your system. Updating is a reasonable check when a driver is outdated; rolling back is worth considering when the problem began after an update. Avoid generic driver-updater apps.
Test whether background software is interfering
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, making it easier to identify background software conflicts affecting apps or games. Use it as a temporary diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration. Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 10 and 11 are at How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot steps and record which services or startup items you disable.
- Restart Windows and test the game under the same conditions that produced the problem.
- If the game works, re-enable the disabled items systematically, testing between changes, until you identify the conflict.
- Restore normal startup when the test is complete, whether or not it found a cause.
Changing startup configuration can temporarily reduce functionality. Follow the instructions carefully and avoid leaving essential services disabled.
Check DirectX information without installing random runtimes
Run DxDiag to review DirectX components and driver information. Microsoft explains how to check the DirectX version and update it at How to install the latest version of DirectX. On Windows 10 and 11, DirectX 11.3 and 12 are included with Windows, and updates arrive through Windows Update; there is no separate standalone package for those versions.

Some older games may need legacy DirectX 9 runtime files. For example, an error naming d3dx9_35.dll is a specific compatibility clue. Verify the exact message and use Microsoft’s documented route rather than downloading an arbitrary runtime bundle.
If Windows shows a stop code, troubleshoot Windows
An unexpected restart or stop-code screen means the issue may involve hardware, a driver, or software beyond the game. Follow Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance, which includes checking Device Manager for flagged devices, addressing a problematic device as appropriate, installing Windows updates, and checking available disk space.

Microsoft describes 10%–15% free disk space as a general target in stop-code troubleshooting, while noting that the actual need varies by configuration. This is not a universal gaming requirement or a proven fix for stuttering.
Know when to broaden the diagnosis
- One game fails: Focus on that title’s update, official requirements, files, compatibility, and publisher support.
- Several games fail: Check shared drivers and Windows conditions, and consider appropriate system diagnostics.
- Windows restarts or shows stop codes: Follow the system-level checks above instead of treating the problem as game-only.
Do not buy a graphics card, memory, storage device, or repair tool based on the symptom alone. Consider a repair service or component replacement only when a repeatable test or diagnostic evidence points to a specific fault or limitation.
