To manage Xbox storage, review your installed games and free space in the console’s storage settings, then choose whether to uninstall games, archive them on a compatible USB drive, or add an Xbox Storage Expansion Card. USB storage can keep games available for transfer, but Seagate says Series X|S-optimized games stored on USB must be moved to the console’s internal drive or the Seagate card before you can play them.
How do I manage storage on Xbox?
Open the Xbox console’s storage-management area and review installed games and available space. Xbox Support calls this area “Manage storage,” but the precise menu labels and button-by-button path can change; follow the current labels shown on your console rather than relying on an unverified navigation path. Xbox Support: Manage storage
Use the list to identify games you no longer want installed and titles you want to keep available without downloading them again. Your next step depends on whether you need only to free space or want more games ready to launch.
Which Xbox storage option fits your library?
| Option | Best for | Can you play from it? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a game | Freeing space without buying hardware | No, not while it is uninstalled; reinstall it to play again. | You may need to download or install the game again. |
| External USB HDD or SSD | Archiving less-played games and keeping them available for transfer | Do not assume it can launch every Series X|S-optimized game. Seagate says optimized games stored on USB must be moved to internal storage or its Storage Expansion Card for gameplay. | Accept a transfer step and check that the drive is compatible; the console may require formatting. |
| Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S | Adding storage for direct play of supported Series X|S games | Xbox describes it as maintaining the console’s internal SSD peak speed and performance. | It requires a hardware purchase; check current capacities, prices, and availability in your market. |
When should you use a USB drive to archive games?
A compatible USB 3.x external HDD or SSD can serve as a library archive: move games you play less often onto it, then transfer them back when you want to play. This can save you from downloading those games again, but it is not the same as adding directly playable storage for every optimized title.

Seagate’s support guide states: “Games optimized for Series X|S stored on an external USB drive will need to be moved back to the internal drive or Seagate Storage Expansion Card for game play.” Check the current Xbox and drive guidance before buying a specific model, and be prepared for the console to format a drive for use. When does a Storage Expansion Card make sense?
Consider the Seagate Storage Expansion Card if you want to add storage that can directly run supported Series X|S games without the USB archive-and-transfer step. Xbox says the card provides additional external memory while maintaining the same peak speed and performance as the console’s internal SSD. Check current card models, capacity, price, and availability before choosing one. Xbox: Seagate Storage Expansion Card

Quick Resume is a separate feature from whether a game can launch from a given drive. Xbox Wire says Quick Resume works whether a game is played from internal storage, the Seagate card, or USB storage, with game-state data persisted on the internal SSD. That does not remove the requirement to move an optimized game off USB before gameplay. Xbox Wire: Quick Resume on Xbox Series X
