What they can do depends on what was exposed. A breach notice confirms that information was exposed; it does not mean someone has already used it.
What can hackers do with leaked account data?
The data involved determines the likely opportunity. A username and password may provide direct access, while control of your email account can make it easier to reset passwords elsewhere. Financial details and identity information create different risks.
Take over an account or reuse its password
Someone with a working password may sign in to the affected account. If you reused that password, they may also try it on other services. Warning signs include login or password-change alerts you did not trigger, unfamiliar account activity, changed recovery details, or suddenly being unable to sign in. The FTC describes these and other recovery steps in its account recovery guidance.
Use your email to get into other accounts
Email accounts are especially important because other services may send password-reset links there. An intruder who can read your inbox may use those links to change passwords or lock you out. They may also add forwarding rules to keep receiving your messages after you regain access. The FTC calls email an important part of protecting personal information online in its advice for hacked email or social accounts.

Steal money or commit identity fraud
Depending on what information is available, identity thieves may make unauthorized charges, withdraw funds, or open accounts such as utility accounts in another person’s name. Other possible forms of identity misuse include fraudulent tax refunds, medical care obtained using someone else’s insurance, and—in extreme cases—using another person’s name during an arrest. These are possible outcomes, not consequences of every data leak. IdentityTheft.gov lists them among its warning signs of identity theft.
Impersonate you or target people you know
A criminal who controls an email or social media account can send messages you did not write, including requests for money or links that may spread malware. The FTC advises contacting people who received suspicious messages from a hacked account and telling them not to click links or respond to unusual requests.

What should you do after a data breach?
Start with the organization’s breach notice: it should identify which categories of information were involved and explain any assistance being offered. Then match your response to the exposed data.
| Data exposed or account affected | Plausible risk | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Username and password | Access to that account; reused credentials may put other accounts at risk. | Change the exposed password and every reused instance to a unique password. Sign out other sessions and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if available. |
| Email account access | Password-reset links and private messages may be exposed; an intruder may add forwarding rules. | Recover and secure email first. Check recovery details, forwarding rules, sent and deleted messages, then secure linked accounts. |
| Bank or card information | Unauthorized withdrawals, purchases, or account access. | Contact the bank or card issuer through a known, trusted channel, review transactions, and follow its fraud process. |
| Social Security number or other identity details | New-account, tax, utility, or other identity fraud. | Follow the relevant steps at IdentityTheft.gov, review credit reports and unfamiliar accounts, and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. |
These are general risk categories, not a prediction about a particular breach. Use the notice to determine which apply to you.

How to secure an account that may be compromised
- If you can still sign in, change the password. Choose a long, unique password, and sign out of other devices or sessions if the service provides that option.
- Turn on 2FA. Check that the recovery email addresses and phone numbers on the account belong to you and are accessible.
- Secure your primary email account. Review its password, recovery methods, and active sessions before relying on it to recover other accounts.
- Look for activity you did not create. Check email forwarding rules, sent and deleted folders, and social accounts. Warn contacts if suspicious messages may have come from you.
- If you are locked out, use official recovery. Go directly to the provider’s website or app and follow its account recovery process. The FTC’s recovery guidance links to processes for several common services.
- If sensitive identity information was exposed, use IdentityTheft.gov. Follow its recovery steps, review credit reports and unfamiliar accounts, and consider whether a fraud alert or credit freeze is appropriate. A freeze can make it harder for someone to open new credit accounts in your name.
- Do not trust unexpected breach links. Avoid signing in through an unsolicited email or text. Contact the company using a website address or phone number you already know is genuine.
How can you reduce the risk of another compromise?
- Use a different password for every account. A password manager can store unique passwords or generate them for you. The FTC’s personal-information protection guidance recommends aiming for at least 15 characters or using a passphrase made from random words. In separate hacked-account guidance, the FTC recommends 12–15 characters for a new unique password; these are recommendations in different contexts, not a single universal threshold.
- Use stronger 2FA options where available. The FTC says authenticator apps and security keys are more secure options than common verification passcodes when a service supports them. Check that the key or standard you choose works with your account. No 2FA method guarantees protection against every phishing attempt, recovery weakness, or active session.
- Keep software updated. Install updates for your operating system, browser, apps, and security software. If you suspect malicious software may be involved, the FTC recommends updating security software and running a scan before following account recovery steps; a paid scanner is not a stated requirement.
