For most homes with working Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 7 is enough—and there is little reason to replace an adequate router just to get Wi-Fi 8. If your router is failing to meet a current need, Wi-Fi 7 is a reasonable generation to consider now. Wi-Fi 8 products are beginning to appear, but the standard and compatible-client ecosystem are still developing.

What is the practical difference between Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8?

Wi-Fi 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be, the amendment titled “Enhancements for Extremely High Throughput.” IEEE’s published 802.11-2024 standard describes a mode capable of at least 30 Gbit/s maximum throughput at the MAC data service access point. That is a standards-level maximum—not a typical home speed, a guarantee of your internet speed, or a result every Wi-Fi 7 device can achieve. The standard also provides for backward compatibility and coexistence with older devices. IEEE’s 802.11-2024 standard page

Qualcomm describes Wi-Fi 7 capabilities including 320 MHz channels, 4K QAM, and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets supported devices use multiple bands simultaneously. Whether you benefit depends on the router, client device, network conditions, and the task—not just the Wi-Fi label. Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 8 overview

Wi-Fi 8, associated with IEEE P802.11bn and the Ultra High Reliability project, is being developed with an emphasis on reliability and responsiveness in challenging conditions, such as dense networks, coverage edges, and movement between access points. Qualcomm presents this as the design direction; it should not be mistaken for a promise that every Wi-Fi 8 router will be faster or more reliable in every home. Current reporting also cautions against treating Wi-Fi 8 as a simple raw-speed jump over Wi-Fi 7.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Is Wi-Fi 8 finalized, and can your devices use it?

No: the latest IEEE project timeline entry in the cited sources, dated September 2, 2026, lists P802.11bn draft D2.00 at 77% and shows predicted milestones extending into 2028. The percentage is a project-status field, not a measure of product readiness. IEEE schedule milestones are estimates, not delivery commitments. IEEE 802.11 Working Group project timeline

Qualcomm projects final IEEE approval in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification in January 2028; those dates are the company’s projections, not an official guarantee. Qualcomm says, “Wi-Fi 8 is currently progressing through the IEEE802.11bn standardization process.”

Early routers can reach the market before a standard is final and before compatible phones and laptops are broadly available. TechRadar reported in September 2026 that TP-Link had launched its first Wi-Fi 8 routers, with retail availability expected later that year, while Wi-Fi 8-capable smartphones and laptops were not expected until the following year. Its October 4, 2026 report on an early Wi-Fi 8 gaming router likewise said compatible clients were not expected until 2027 at the earliest. These are reports about a changing market, not an official certification calendar: TechRadar’s Wi-Fi 8 overview and TechRadar’s report on an early Wi-Fi 8 gaming router.

A Wi-Fi 8 router does not make existing phones, laptops, or smart-home devices Wi-Fi 8 clients. They connect using the capabilities they support. One report says an early router may improve performance for current Wi-Fi 7 clients, but that is a product-specific report—not an assured benefit of buying any Wi-Fi 8 router.

Should you upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 now or wait?

Your situation Practical choice Why
Your current Wi-Fi works well and you have no near-term need to replace the router. Wait. You can avoid paying for an early-generation product while the Wi-Fi 8 standard and compatible-client ecosystem mature.
Your router is obsolete, unreliable, or inadequate for a specific current need. Consider Wi-Fi 7 now. Wi-Fi 7 is based on a published standard and offers current capabilities for compatible devices. Choose by the problem you need to solve, not by the generation label alone.
You want an early Wi-Fi 8 router despite the developing standard and limited compatible clients. Evaluate the whole product, not just its Wi-Fi 8 label. Its current ports, mesh and backhaul design, firmware support, price, and performance with your existing devices need to make sense independently.

Check what is actually limiting your home network

A new wireless generation will not automatically fix a dead zone, a weak broadband connection, or a wired-port shortfall. Before buying, identify the bottleneck and compare candidate routers against it:

  • Coverage: Look at where the signal fails and whether the router’s placement, a mesh system, or wired access points better fit your home layout.
  • Capacity and congestion: Consider how many devices are active, where interference occurs, and whether compatible clients can use the capabilities you want.
  • Wired connections: Check WAN and LAN ports against your broadband plan and devices; wireless generation does not replace the need for suitable wired connectivity.
  • Compatibility: List the phones, laptops, and other clients you expect to benefit. A router’s generation cannot upgrade those devices’ radios.
  • Cost and maturity: Decide whether the present need justifies replacing the router now or whether you prefer to wait for Wi-Fi 8 standardization, certification, and broader client availability.

No cited source establishes that Wi-Fi 8 will improve every household equally, and the available reports are not a controlled, home-by-home comparison of Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8 routers. Avoid relying on universal range or speed claims when choosing.
