Majora’s Mask on Switch is the original Nintendo 64 game, not the 3DS remaster. Choose Switch if you want the N64 edition and have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack access; choose Majora’s Mask 3D if you have compatible 3DS-family hardware and want its refreshed visuals and documented interface updates.
What version is on each platform?
Nintendo added the Nintendo 64 release of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack collection. Nintendo’s announcement of 25 February 2022 identifies it as the game originally released on Nintendo 64 in 2000. It is not Majora’s Mask 3D, the separate remaster for Nintendo 3DS. Majora’s Mask 3D is a remaster for the Nintendo 3DS family. Nintendo’s UK product page lists its release date as 13 February 2015 and describes refreshed visuals and added features while retaining the original game’s premise. The 3D display effect is available only on 3D-capable 3DS models; Nintendo says the game can also be played on Nintendo 2DS systems. Nintendo’s 3DS product page.
What’s different about Majora’s Mask 3D?
Nintendo documents several presentation and usability changes for the 3DS remaster. These are meaningful differences in how the game is presented and navigated; they do not make it a different story. Both editions center on Link, the Ocarina of Time, and Termina’s repeating three-day cycle.

- Bombers’ Notebook alarms: The upgraded Notebook tracks activities and can alert you to events.
- Hints and fishing: Sheikah Stones provide hints, and fishing holes are an added activity.
These features are documented on Nintendo’s Majora’s Mask 3D page. Nintendo’s cited Switch announcement identifies the N64 version but does not enumerate display or emulation features, so a technical comparison of those aspects is not established here.

Which version should you play?
Choose Switch for the Nintendo 64 release
Pick the Switch option if you have a compatible console and Expansion Pack access, and you specifically want to play the original N64 edition. It is the straightforward choice if you want that version through Nintendo’s subscription catalog rather than seeking 3DS hardware and a game card.

Choose 3DS for the remaster and its handheld interface
Pick Majora’s Mask 3D if you have compatible 3DS-family hardware and prefer its refreshed visuals, touch-screen organization, Notebook alarms, hints, and fishing holes. It is also the option to seek if you want a physical game card; check the seller’s region, condition, and compatibility before buying.
If you have neither platform
Compare the cost and availability of the required access route where you live: Expansion Pack membership and the current Switch catalog, or compatible 3DS hardware and a physical copy. The cited Nintendo pages establish requirements and dated product information, not current subscription prices or universal physical inventory. Neither source establishes one edition as objectively superior.
