Most compost pickup programs accept fruit and vegetable scraps. Many also take meat, fish, bones, dairy, eggs, grains, bread, pasta, and leftovers—but local rules decide what belongs in your bin. Check the accepted-items list for your city, building, or hauler before adding anything uncertain.

Food scraps commonly accepted in pickup programs

These are common accepted categories, but they are not universal. For example, Portland lists a broad range of raw and cooked food, while Minneapolis also accepts many prepared foods and animal products.

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps, peels, pits, and spoiled produce
  • Meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, and bones, where accepted
  • Dairy products, eggs, and eggshells, where listed
  • Bread, baked goods, pasta, rice, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds
  • Leftovers and plate scrapings, where prepared foods are accepted
  • Coffee grounds and, often, paper coffee filters

Portland’s curbside compost guide lists meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese and dairy, bread, baked goods, pasta, rice, beans, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruit, peels, pits, eggshells, bones, coffee grounds, and raw or cooked leftovers or spoiled food. Minneapolis lists fruits and vegetables, meat, fish and bones, dairy, eggs, pasta, beans, rice, bread, cereal, nuts, and shells in its accepted organics guide.

Why your local rules matter

Programs can differ even on familiar items. Milwaukee’s food-scrap drop-off accepts cooked meat and animal or fish bones, but excludes raw meat. Its guide also excludes tea bags, yard waste, liquids, cooking oil and grease, food packaging, and biodegradable utensils or takeout containers. Check the specific service rules rather than assuming that a curbside bin, drop-off site, and backyard compost pile accept the same things.

Compost Tumbler Bin Composter Dual Chamber 43 Gallon (Bundled with Pearson's Gardening Gloves)
  • ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
  • ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
  • ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
  • ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
  • ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.

Tea bags illustrate the variation: Portland and Nashville list them as accepted, while Milwaukee excludes them. See the Portland guide, Milwaukee guide, and Nashville guide.

Food-soiled paper, liners, and compostable packaging

Do not treat “compostable” on a label as automatic permission to put an item in the bin. Acceptance depends on the local program and its processing rules.

  • Compostable products: Minneapolis accepts certified compostable products bearing the BPI logo. Vancouver says not to use plastic bags, including those labeled biodegradable or compostable.

Consult the local pages for Minneapolis, Portland, and Vancouver before adding paper products, liners, or packaging.

What to keep out

Unless your local guide explicitly says otherwise, keep conventional plastic, wrappers, metal, foil, and glass out of food-scrap bins. Guides also commonly exclude liquids, grease or cooking oil, expanded foam, and food packaging. Animal or human waste is another listed exclusion in some programs.

How to check an item before you toss it

  1. Find the accepted-items list for the service that collects your scraps: your city, building, hauler, or drop-off site.
  2. Look for the specific food category. Check separately for raw meat, bones, dairy, leftovers, and tea bags rather than relying on a general “food scraps accepted” label.
  3. Check the rules for paper, liners, and products marked compostable. Follow any certification requirement and avoid plastic bags unless the program explicitly permits them.
  4. If the item or packaging is not listed, leave it out and ask the program. Do not assume that acceptance by a nearby city or another type of compost service applies to yours.

A countertop pail can be a convenient way to collect scraps before taking them to the pickup cart. Check local liner rules before lining it.
