Wi-Fi 8 is being designed to make wireless connections more reliable in difficult conditions, not to set a new peak-speed record over Wi-Fi 7. Its proposed goals include better throughput when signals are challenging, lower high-percentile latency, and fewer dropped packets as devices move between access points. Those are targets for a standard still in development—not guaranteed results from products you can buy today.
What Wi-Fi 8 is
Wi-Fi 8 is the industry name associated with IEEE P802.11bn, an amendment whose project title is “Enhancements for Ultra High Reliability” (UHR). The IEEE 802.11 Working Group timeline lists the project at draft D2.00, so the standard is not final. The timeline records a D1.0 ballot dated 2025-10-06 and a D2.0 ballot dated 2026-09-02, with predicted approval milestones extending into 2028. Those are project milestones, not guaranteed publication or product-release dates. IEEE 802.11 Working Group project timeline
Wi-Fi 7, by comparison, is based on the published IEEE Std 802.11be-2024. The Working Group records its publication date as 2025-07-22. IEEE 802.11 Working Group
Wi-Fi 7 vs. Wi-Fi 8: what the proposed improvements mean
Qualcomm’s 2025 white paper relays three goals from the IEEE 802.11 scope. Each “up to” figure is a target, not an independent measurement of retail products or a promise for every network. Qualcomm, “Wi-Fi 8: Advancing wireless through ultra-high reliability, Part 1”

| Comparison | Wi-Fi 7 | Wi-Fi 8 proposal | What it could mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Throughput in challenging signal conditions | No comparative figure stated in the cited Wi-Fi 8 scope. | Up to 25% higher throughput in challenging signal conditions; a stated target, not a product benchmark. | More useful throughput where reception is difficult, rather than proof of a higher maximum speed. |
| Latency | No comparative figure stated in the cited Wi-Fi 8 scope. | Up to 25% lower latency at the 95th percentile of the latency distribution; a stated target. | Potentially fewer especially slow responses in difficult conditions; this is not a claim that every response or average latency improves by 25%. |
| Packets lost during access-point transitions | No comparative figure stated in the cited Wi-Fi 8 scope. | Up to 25% fewer dropped packets during transitions between access points; a stated target. | Potentially smoother connections as a device moves between access points. |
| Peak speed | Wi-Fi 7 is the published predecessor standard. | The cited goals do not establish a higher headline peak rate than Wi-Fi 7. | Do not treat “Wi-Fi 8” as evidence of a faster maximum connection. |
| Standard status | IEEE Std 802.11be-2024 is published; the IEEE Working Group records publication on 2025-07-22. | IEEE P802.11bn is at draft D2.00 in the timeline dated 2026-09-19. | Wi-Fi 7 is a current standardized product category; Wi-Fi 8’s proposed behavior may change before the standard is complete. |
Does Wi-Fi 8 make Wi-Fi faster, or mainly more reliable?
The evidence supports describing Wi-Fi 8 as a reliability-focused development, not as a faster-peak-rate generation. Its throughput goal is specifically about challenging signal conditions. That is different from establishing a higher maximum link rate or faster speed in every setting. Qualcomm’s summary of the IEEE scope emphasizes difficult conditions, high-percentile latency, and packet loss during access-point transitions. Intel likewise describes a broader aim of more reliable and deterministic operation. Intel, “Wi-Fi 8: The next generation of wireless connectivity”
The 95th-percentile latency target concerns the slower end of a distribution of latency results, rather than the average alone. If achieved in practice, that kind of improvement could make performance feel more consistent by reducing some unusually slow responses. The target does not establish a particular improvement for an individual device, application, or home.

Who is most likely to benefit?
The proposed goals are most relevant to people whose wireless connection is challenged by radio conditions or movement around a multi-access-point network. The following are practical examples inferred from the stated targets, not guarantees of improvement:
- People near the edge of coverage: the throughput goal specifically concerns challenging signal conditions.
- Homes or workplaces with congestion or interference: Qualcomm frames the work around isolated and overlapping network deployments, although the cited figures do not promise a particular improvement in a given crowded environment.
- People moving between access points: the packet-loss target concerns transitions between APs, making multi-AP and mesh setups a natural example.
- Latency-sensitive use: a lower 95th-percentile latency target could matter when unusually slow responses are disruptive, but the cited material does not quantify outcomes for any particular app or activity.
What Wi-Fi 8 does not promise
- Not a guaranteed 25% upgrade: the figures are “up to” targets in the reported scope, not universal gains for every device, home, or use.
- Not a demonstrated peak-speed increase: the cited goals do not establish a higher headline maximum rate than Wi-Fi 7.
- Not an automatic fix for a weak internet connection: a router upgrade cannot by itself remove a bottleneck caused by the broadband service, client device, access-point placement, or local interference.
- Not an established software upgrade for Wi-Fi 7 equipment: the cited sources do not establish that existing Wi-Fi 7 devices can be upgraded to Wi-Fi 8.
- Not a finalized feature set or retail guarantee: P802.11bn remains in draft development, and target language is not evidence of shipping-device performance.
Should you wait for Wi-Fi 8?
If you need networking equipment now, Wi-Fi 7 is a relevant current category because IEEE Std 802.11be-2024 has been published. Choose based on your current coverage, devices, and network needs rather than buying on the assumption that a Wi-Fi 7 product will later become Wi-Fi 8 or that Wi-Fi 8 will guarantee a particular improvement. The standards timeline gives predicted milestones, not a certain date when compliant products will be available.
