Majora’s Mask gives Link 72 in-game hours—three days—before the cycle ends. You do not have to finish the adventure in one run: playing the Song of Time returns Link to the first morning while preserving selected progress. The reset also rewinds much of the world, so it helps to know what carries over and what does not.
How the 72-hour countdown works
The Nintendo 64 instruction manual describes three days, or 72 in-game hours, before the game ends if time runs out. Each day lasts 24 in-game hours, as the Nintendo 3DS electronic manual also explains. Nintendo’s 3DS manual puts it simply: “Time flows continuously during the game.”
In the Nintendo 64 manual, time stops during conversations and when you pause with START. The 3DS manual also identifies subscreens—including the Bombers’ Notebook and Item Screen—as pause conditions. These are edition-specific descriptions, so do not assume the manuals use identical wording for every pause condition.
What happens when the three days are up?
If the three-day countdown reaches its end, the Nintendo 64 manual says the game ends. You can instead choose to reset earlier by playing the Song of Time on the Ocarina of Time. Nintendo’s manual says: “When you play the song, Link will pass through a time vortex to return to 6:00 a.m. on the first day.”

This is a return to the cycle’s beginning, not a requirement to complete the whole adventure before time runs out. You can make progress, reset, and continue across later cycles.
What the Song of Time saves—and what it resets
The N64 manual distinguishes lasting progress from the activities and resources tied to the current cycle. Its lists are specific to the Nintendo 64 release; the 3DS manual describes the same broad split, but summarizes the details differently.

In practical terms, deposit rupees you want to keep before resetting. Expect to redo cycle-specific events and dungeon progress, even though important items and records can persist.
What changes for other characters?
The Nintendo 64 manual says characters will not remember meeting Link after he returns to the first day. The world is rewound along with the cycle-specific events; Link’s retained items and records are what let the adventure advance across resets.
