Which Pokémon game should you play?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To sneak up on Pokémon and throw Poké Balls without always starting a battle | Pokémon Legends: Arceus | Observing a Pokémon’s behavior, approaching carefully, and aiming a throw are core parts of catching. Some encounters flow directly into battles. Official gameplay details. |
| To fill out the Pokédex through repeated species research | Pokémon Legends: Arceus | Research tasks build Pokédex entries and contribute to Survey Corps rank and access to areas. |
| To explore a connected region where towns meet wilderness | Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet | Paldea’s towns blend into the surrounding wild areas, with Pokémon appearing throughout the region. Official game overview. |
| To play a trainer adventure with an open-world structure | Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet | The games retain the familiar focus on battling wild Pokémon to catch them, within a broad open-world setting. |
| To get additional areas, characters, and Pokémon beyond the base game | Scarlet or Violet, with its expansion considered separately | The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero adds two parts of extra content, but requires its corresponding base game. |
What makes Pokémon Legends: Arceus different?
A hands-on catching and research loop
Set in Hisui, an earlier-era Sinnoh, the game puts you in the Galaxy Team’s Survey Corps. Your work is to survey, catch, and research Pokémon as you help create the region’s first Pokédex. The official overview describes it as a journey that combines familiar series gameplay with action and RPG elements. Read the official overview.

In the field, you can watch a Pokémon’s disposition, approach cautiously, and throw a Poké Ball yourself. Some Pokémon are easier to catch after you weaken them in battle. A battle can begin seamlessly when you throw a Poké Ball containing one of your Pokémon near a wild one. That makes direct catching and battling parts of one continuous encounter rather than always separate steps. See the official gameplay description.
Simply catching one of each species is not the only way to progress the Pokédex. Research tasks ask you to engage with species in particular ways; completed research helps raise your team rank and opens access to additional areas.
#1 Best Overall
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
Different battle pacing
Legends: Arceus does not rely solely on a conventional one-action-per-turn rhythm. Pokémon stats and other factors affect action order and how many actions a Pokémon may take. Agile style can bring a Pokémon’s next action sooner at reduced power, while strong style increases move power but lowers action speed. These choices make the timing and force of a move part of battle strategy. Official battle details.
Travel and post-credits content
Base camps provide places to rest and craft, and special ride Pokémon let you travel across land, water, and air. The official gameplay page also identifies Daybreak as a free content update with post-credits content, including mass outbreaks and additional battle challenges; it is not a paid expansion. Rank #2
- This game comes in UK packaging, but it is region-free and compatible with all Nintendo Switch consoles worldwide.
What makes Scarlet and Violet different?
A connected Paldea to explore
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet take place in Paldea, where towns blend into wilderness without borders and Pokémon appear across varied environments. The games use an open-world structure while keeping the familiar trainer journey and wild-Pokémon battles central. Official game overview.
Terastallization changes battle strategy
The games’ signature battle feature is Terastallization. A Pokémon’s Tera Type can change its type, affecting how you approach a battle. It gives the Scarlet and Violet battle system a distinct strategic hook, unlike Legends: Arceus’s emphasis on action order and agile or strong styles. Official Terastallization details.

The expansion is optional and requires a base game
The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is a two-part expansion: The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. It adds areas, characters, rivals, and Pokémon to Scarlet or Violet; it does not replace either base game. Choose the expansion for the same game version you own, and check the current product format before buying. The Pokémon Company announced base-game-plus-expansion bundle packs for release on November 3, 2023, but that historical announcement does not establish current stock or packaging. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Pokémon HOME connect the games?
Pokémon HOME supports both Legends: Arceus and Scarlet/Violet, but that does not mean every Pokémon can move between them. A species can be transferred only into a game in which it appears. Check the supported-game and transfer information before planning a collection around moving Pokémon between titles. Pokémon HOME overview.
Which one is the better fit for you?
- Pick Pokémon Legends: Arceus if the appeal is watching wild Pokémon, approaching them in the field, making direct catches, and completing research tasks as a main progression loop.
- Pick Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want to roam a connected region and experience the familiar trainer adventure in an open-world setting.
- Consider the Scarlet or Violet expansion only if you want its additional content and are buying it for the matching base game.
The games’ documented mechanics support this distinction; they do not establish that one has better graphics, performance, story, overall quality, or replay value. The practical choice is which style of Pokémon adventure you want to play.
