The core Johto adventure and Pokéwalker support are shared, so if neither legendary nor the available Pokémon matters to you, the better-condition complete copy is the more practical tie-breaker.
What is different between HeartGold and SoulSilver?
Nintendo describes both as enhanced versions of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver, set in Johto. The main choice is which version’s featured legendary and version-specific Pokémon you prefer. Nintendo identifies Ho-Oh with HeartGold and Lugia with SoulSilver. Nintendo’s HeartGold product page and SoulSilver product page outline the games.
The official SoulSilver manual says the species that appear, and how likely they are to appear, differ between the two versions. For example, a secondary reference lists Growlithe and Gligar as HeartGold examples, and Vulpix and Teddiursa as SoulSilver examples. These are examples, not a complete exclusives list; if you are filling out a collection, check the full list for the specific Pokémon you need. Trading can also affect what you can obtain.
Choose based on what you want to play

What the Pokéwalker adds
The Pokéwalker was included with both games, so it is not a reason to favor one version. The accessory counts steps and connects to game-linked activities, including finding Pokémon and items on different routes. For a secondhand purchase, verify whether the Pokéwalker is actually included: the original bundle does not guarantee that a used listing still has it.

Check hardware and online features before buying
The official manual identifies SoulSilver as a Nintendo DS game and says its Dual Slot feature works only with Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite hardware. Check the exact hardware and feature you plan to use before buying; compatibility may depend on the console and feature in question.
Do not buy either game expecting Nintendo’s original DS online services to work. Nintendo says Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for DS/DSi and Wii software was discontinued on 20 May 2014, ending features such as online play, matchmaking, competitions, and leaderboards. Nintendo’s SoulSilver product page states the shutdown notice.

How to choose a used copy
- Pick your version preference. Choose by Ho-Oh, Lugia, or the specific version-exclusive Pokémon you want.
- Check what the listing includes. Confirm whether it is just the game or a more complete bundle, including the Pokéwalker if that matters to you.
- Assess the actual copy. Compare condition and completeness, then decide whether the asking price works for you. Current resale prices, stock, authenticity, and listing condition are not established here, so evaluate those details for the specific seller and item.
