That setting does not cover every kind of download: app updates, content downloaded inside an app, Safari files, and iCloud syncing each have separate controls.
Choose the setting that matches what is downloading
On iPhone, “automatic downloads” can mean several different things. Use the App Store controls for app installs, updates, or preloaded in-app content; Low Data Mode to reduce supported background activity; Safari settings to change where browser downloads are saved; and iCloud settings to stop an app syncing data. There is no single documented switch that blocks every app from downloading every type of file.

Stop apps from installing automatically from another device
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then App Store.
- Turn off App Downloads.
Apple describes this setting as controlling automatic installation of apps purchased on your other devices. It does not turn off automatic updates or background content downloads; those are separate options on the same App Store settings screen. See Apple’s App Store settings guide.
Turn off automatic updates or in-app content
Go to Settings > Apps > App Store and review these controls separately:

- App Updates: Turn it off to stop apps from automatically downloading and installing updates.
- In-App Content: Turn it off to stop apps from automatically downloading content in the background before you first open them.
Choose only the control that matches the behavior you want to change. Disabling updates means you will need to manage app updates yourself; disabling In-App Content may mean an app has to fetch content when you open or use it. Apple explains these App Store controls.
Reduce automatic downloads and background data use
Turn on Low Data Mode for the cellular or Wi-Fi connection where you want to limit data use. Apple says it turns off App Store video autoplay, automatic updates, and automatic downloads, as well as Music automatic downloads and some other background activity. Its effects vary because apps and services handle data use differently; it is not a guarantee that every app’s file downloads will stop. Change where Safari saves downloaded files
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Safari > Downloads.
- Choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or Other.
This changes the save location for Safari downloads. It does not disable Safari downloads. Apple’s Safari settings guide lists these destination choices.
Stop an app from syncing data through iCloud
- Open Settings and tap [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap See All.
- Select the app and turn off its iCloud use.
Apple says the app will no longer connect with iCloud, and its data will exist only on your device. This changes syncing and storage through iCloud; it does not establish that downloads performed inside the app itself are blocked. Read Apple’s iCloud app-syncing guidance.

Restrict app installs or redownloads with Screen Time
For a child’s device or another device where you need store restrictions, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and review the controls for store purchases and app access. Screen Time can restrict store purchases and redownloads, but Apple does not describe it as a system-wide blocker for files downloaded within apps. Apple’s guide to blocking apps, downloads, websites, and purchases explains the available restrictions.

Apple’s current iPhone guides use the paths and labels above, but labels can differ depending on the iOS version installed. If a control is not where described, check your iPhone’s software version and look for the same setting in the relevant App Store, Safari, iCloud, or Screen Time section.
