Before changing phones, either complete a fresh WhatsApp backup on your old phone or use WhatsApp’s supported phone-to-phone transfer. Keep the old phone and its WhatsApp data intact until you have opened WhatsApp on the new phone and confirmed that the chats and media you need are there. The right steps depend on the phone pair, access to your cloud account, and whether you are changing your number.
Choose the right route for your phones
There are two main options: back up to Google Account or iCloud and restore on the new phone, or transfer directly between phones. A cloud restore depends on a successful backup and the required account, number, and storage access. Direct transfer avoids relying on an existing cloud backup, but requires both phones and a supported transfer path.

WhatsApp’s help pages—“How to transfer your chat history,” “About changing phones,” and “Can’t transfer chat history”—describe the available flows. Requirements and interface labels can change; check the current instructions for your phone pair before starting, especially for cross-platform moves.
If you are changing your phone number, do that first
If you will use a different number, use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature on the old phone before transferring chats. WhatsApp warns that registering the new number on the new phone without first changing it on the old phone can result in lost chat history. The transfer or restore should then use the number associated with the account after the change.

If you no longer have access to the old account or phone, recovery may be limited. WhatsApp says chat history is not stored on its servers, so it cannot reconstruct chats that are absent from both a usable device and a recoverable backup.
Back up chats on the old phone
Android: Google Account backup
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
- Choose or confirm the Google Account to use for the backup, then set the backup option to Google Account or Google Drive. Labels may vary by app version.
- Start a backup and wait for it to finish. Check the displayed last-backup time before relying on it.
- Confirm that the same Google Account is available on the new Android phone, and that both the Google Account and device have enough storage for backup and restore.
WhatsApp ties Android backups to both the Google Account and the WhatsApp phone number. Google may automatically delete backups that have not been updated for five months. A new backup in the same Google Account overwrites the prior one, so the older version cannot be restored. WhatsApp backups are not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless you enable encrypted backup.

iPhone: iCloud backup
- On the old iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Check the displayed backup time and size. Start a new backup and wait for it to complete before changing phones.
- Make sure iCloud and the iPhone have enough free space, and that iCloud is available on the new iPhone for the restore.
- If you need videos in the restore, enable Include Videos before making the backup.
An iCloud restore requires an existing backup and the same phone number. Messages sent or received after the latest backup are not included in that backup and cannot be restored from it.
Direct transfer when you have both phones
Android to Android
WhatsApp Chat Transfer moves chat and media history locally between phones. WhatsApp’s listed requirements are Android 6 or later on both devices, the same WhatsApp number, a new phone not yet registered on WhatsApp, nearby phones, Wi-Fi enabled on both, and both phones connected to power. The phones do not need an internet connection for this local transfer.

- On the new Android phone, install WhatsApp and begin setup without registering the account. Follow WhatsApp’s current on-screen instructions to show the transfer QR code.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp and start Chat Transfer from the Chats settings. Scan the QR code shown on the new phone.
- Keep both phones unlocked, WhatsApp open, nearby, and connected to power until the transfer completes. Messaging pauses during the transfer.
- Open WhatsApp on the new phone and verify your conversations and media before removing WhatsApp data from the old phone.
WhatsApp’s Google Account backup and Chat Transfer are different routes: the backup uses a cloud account, while Chat Transfer uses the nearby phones and QR workflow.
Android to iPhone
WhatsApp’s supported route uses Apple’s Move to iOS app during iPhone setup. Start the WhatsApp data export from the Android phone when prompted in the setup migration, then install or open WhatsApp on the iPhone and verify with the same phone number. Follow the current WhatsApp and Apple instructions for supported operating-system and app versions; the requirements are specific to the current transfer flow.

The transferred data does not automatically become an iCloud backup. Once the move is complete, create an iCloud backup from WhatsApp on the iPhone if you want cloud recovery on that platform.
iPhone to Android
WhatsApp’s supported route begins in WhatsApp on the iPhone and uses a QR code and local Wi-Fi transfer to the Android phone. The current instructions require the same phone number, current WhatsApp versions, stable Wi-Fi, and the specified Android setup and operating-system conditions. Follow the transfer steps before completing WhatsApp activation on the Android phone.

A local transfer does not create a cloud backup. If you want a backup on the destination platform, make a Google Account backup from WhatsApp on Android after verifying the transferred chats. You can also make an iCloud backup on the iPhone before moving if you want a separate backup of the original iPhone history.

Do not assume every kind of WhatsApp data moves through every route. WhatsApp’s cross-platform help pages identify exclusions that can include peer-to-peer payment messages and selected Channel media; the exclusions depend on the direction and current transfer procedure. Review the exact official instructions for your phone pair before you begin. A direct transfer also does not replace a separate cloud backup on the destination platform.

If the backup or transfer fails
- No backup appears to restore: Check that the new phone has the correct Google Account or iCloud access and that WhatsApp is using the same number as the backup.
- Backup will not complete: Check the network connection, available account and device storage, account sign-in, and battery or power connection.
- Transfer is stuck: Keep both phones powered and nearby, leave WhatsApp open, and restart both phones before trying again.
- WhatsApp is already active on the new phone: Some transfer flows must start before activation. WhatsApp may require you to uninstall WhatsApp on the new phone and restart setup. Old and new chat histories cannot be merged.
- Old phone is unavailable: Restore is possible only if a usable backup exists and you can meet its account, number, and storage requirements. WhatsApp Help Center explains that it cannot restore chats for you because chat history is not stored on its servers.
Verify the move before wiping the old phone
- Open WhatsApp on the new phone and confirm that expected conversations are present.
- Check important recent chats and media, including videos if you enabled their backup.
- If you used a direct cross-platform transfer, create a new cloud backup on the destination phone if you want cloud recovery going forward.
- Only after verification should you erase, reset, or uninstall WhatsApp on the old phone.
