Choose an EEG system by working backward from your protocol: the recording environment and simultaneous modalities, the electrode workflow your participants can tolerate, the channel coverage and signal requirements, and the trigger and software integrations your experiments need. There is no universally best amplifier. Treat manufacturer specifications as configuration-specific claims, then confirm the complete setup—including caps, connectors, software, service, and price—with the vendor.

Start with the experiment, not the amplifier

Before comparing models, write down what the system must do in your actual study. A stationary behavioral EEG setup has different constraints from mobile recording or EEG acquired in an MRI scanner. Simultaneous TMS, fNIRS, MEG, eye tracking, or peripheral physiology can also change the shortlist.

  • Recording environment: stationary lab, mobile recording, MR scanner, or another specialized environment.
  • Protocol: recording duration, participant group, expected movement, and the brain regions or scalp coverage you need.
  • Modalities: every device that must record or synchronize alongside EEG.
  • Scale: channel count for the current protocol and a realistic path to future studies.
  • Workflow: setup time, participant comfort, staff expertise, and how data will be recorded and analyzed.

Brain Products’ electrode-selection guidance frames the central workflow question as: “What is your ideal balance between signal quality, speed of preparation and participant comfort?” Its scientific consultants Laura Leuchs, Sara Pizzamiglio, and Eduardo Bellomo also write, “Each EEG research project comes with specific challenges.” These are vendor perspectives, but they point to a practical truth: the cap, electrodes, amplifier, and study protocol need to work as one system.

Match the recording environment and integrations

For EEG-fMRI and other MR work

Do not select equipment for EEG-fMRI on the basis of an “MR” label alone. Brain Products describes BrainAmp MR and MR plus as MR Conditional. That status is not permission for unrestricted use in every scanner, room, or configuration. Verify the exact amplifier, cables, electrodes, cap, accessories, scanner conditions, and the manufacturer’s conditions of use with the vendor and your institution’s safety reviewers before finalizing a setup.

For mobile EEG

A mobile system may reduce dependence on a stationary lab, but the details that matter are the configured channel count, electrode compatibility, recording duration, wireless workflow, and how movement or other devices will be handled. Brain Products’ selection guide describes LiveAmp as a wireless system available in 8-, 16-, 32-, or 64-channel configurations, compatible with active and passive electrodes, and equipped with an internal accelerometer. The guide reports approximately four hours of internal battery life, dependent on recording configuration; confirm current specifications and the runtime for the configuration you plan to use.

For multimodal and trigger-based studies

Check the full signal path rather than assuming that two devices can be synchronized because both support triggers. Confirm AUX and bipolar inputs, trigger input and output, timing and synchronization behavior, streaming interfaces, and software compatibility for the actual protocol. Ask the vendor how the proposed configuration handles each connected device and what additional hardware or software is required.

Choose the electrode workflow and cap with the amplifier

Electrode type affects preparation, participant experience, and the practical steps your lab must repeat. Active and passive electrodes, as well as gel-based, dry, and sponge-based workflows, are not interchangeable choices. Compare them in the context of the participant group, recording setting, required preparation, and study protocol—not as isolated features.

  • Preparation and comfort: consider how long setup takes, the demands on staff, and the fit and comfort of the cap during the planned session.
  • Electrode approach: compare active or passive and gel, dry, or sponge workflows against the needs of your recording and participants.
  • Compatibility: confirm the exact amplifier, cap, electrode, connector, and any required adapter or ControlBox. Do not assume caps or electrodes are interchangeable between systems.
  • Repeatability: consider whether the lab can consistently apply the workflow across participants and study visits.

Brain Products describes actiCHamp Plus as compatible with active and passive electrode systems. Its BrainAmp product information lists active and passive options too, while noting that an adapter or ControlBox may be required for some combinations. Those are manufacturer descriptions; confirm the exact parts and compatibility for your proposed configuration.

Set channel count and sampling rate from the protocol

Choose enough channels to meet the study’s coverage and analysis requirements, with a sensible expansion route if future protocols are likely to grow. Do not treat the highest published channel count or sampling rate as a target by itself. Brain Products’ selection guide advises matching sampling rate to the signal’s frequency content and cautions that unnecessarily high rates increase file sizes and processing needs. Treat that as vendor guidance, and check the requirements of your protocol and analysis plan.

The following are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance comparisons. Brain Products’ current product pages, accessed in 2026, do not display publication years.

Compare systems by fit, not by a single specification

If your main requirement is… What to evaluate Evidence-backed example
A laboratory amplifier with a configurable channel count Required EEG and AUX channels, channel-specific sampling rate, electrode compatibility, and future expansion. Brain Products describes actiCHamp Plus as a laboratory amplifier with up to 160 EEG and eight AUX channels; its maximum sampling rate depends on channel configuration.
Stackable laboratory channels or an MR-oriented configuration Exact BrainAmp model, unit configuration, connectors, electrode combination, and MR conditions of use. Brain Products describes stackable 32-channel BrainAmp units up to 256 channels and lists versions for MR use.
Wireless or mobile recording Configured channel count, electrode compatibility, battery runtime for the planned setup, and movement-related workflow. Brain Products’ guide describes LiveAmp in 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-channel configurations, with an internal accelerometer.
A broader MP Research System setup How EEG fits into the full MP Research System, including module count, other measurements, and synchronization requirements. BIOPAC describes the EEG100C for unipolar or bipolar EEG and says the MP Research System can cascade up to 16 amplifier modules.

These examples illustrate different manufacturer-described options; they are not the result of head-to-head testing. A vendor’s recommendation is useful for confirming intended use and compatibility, but it should not be treated as independent comparative evidence.

Build a configuration-specific quote and shortlist

Product-page specifications do not establish the price or total cost of a lab-ready setup. Request a quote for the configuration you actually need and compare like with like, including any required caps and electrodes, adapters, software, training, service, and replacement parts. Ask about regional availability and procurement terms directly; those details are not established by the product information summarized here.

  1. Send vendors the protocol requirements: environment, modalities, duration, participant group, channel coverage, signals, and synchronization needs.
  2. Request a complete bill of materials: amplifier and modules, cap and electrodes, cables, connectors, adapters, ControlBox if applicable, software, and other required components.
  3. Ask for configuration-specific specifications: channel count, sampling rate at that count, inputs, trigger handling, and any use conditions for MR or mobile recording.
  4. Compare ongoing needs: training, service, replacement parts, future expansion, and the cost of supporting the system over its intended use.
  5. Confirm fit with your lab: have the people who will prepare participants, acquire data, and analyze it review the proposed workflow before procurement.

No prices, total ownership costs, procurement lead times, regional availability, or independent head-to-head test results are established by the cited manufacturer material. Treat those as questions to resolve directly rather than assumptions to fill in from a headline specification.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
