Deleting an iPhone app can save more storage than offloading it when the app has a lot of documents and data stored on the device. Offloading removes the app but keeps that data; deleting removes both the app and its related data. The amount saved depends on the app, so check its storage details before choosing.
What’s the difference between offloading and deleting an iPhone app?

That difference explains why deleting has greater potential savings when an app has substantial local data. It is not a guarantee that deleting will always save more for every app: if little data is stored, the difference may be small.
How to check how much storage an app uses
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap the app you are considering offloading or deleting.
- Review its reported usage and the available actions, then choose based on whether you want to keep its documents and data.
Apple cautions that cached and temporary data might not be included in an app’s displayed usage. Treat the figure as a practical guide, not an exact accounting of every byte associated with the app. Apple Support
Which option should you choose?
Offload an app you may use again
Choose offload when you want to remove the installed app to free space but keep its documents and data on your iPhone. The app icon remains available for reinstalling. Before relying on a reinstall, keep in mind that Apple’s guidance does not guarantee that every app’s data will return in every situation.

Delete an app you no longer need
Choose delete when you no longer need the app and are willing to remove its related data too. First check for local work, downloads, or other content you want to preserve; deleting may remove that content along with the app.
How to enable automatic offloading
On iOS 26, Apple lists the setting at Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. When iPhone automatically offloads an unused app, it keeps the app’s documents and data. The icon remains on the Home Screen with a cloud symbol; tap it to reinstall the app. Apple iPhone User Guide for iOS 26

If you still need more iPhone storage
Offloading or deleting apps is only one part of storage cleanup. Apple also recommends reviewing files, photos, messages, and downloaded video when you need to free additional space. Apple iPhone User Guide for iOS 26
Apple does not provide a typical or fixed number of gigabytes saved by offloading or deleting an app. The app’s own contents determine the result, and its displayed usage may omit cached or temporary data.
