Students should learn both computer science foundations and AI literacy. Computer science teaches durable ideas such as algorithms, data, coding, statistics, and computational thinking; AI literacy teaches students to understand AI systems, evaluate their outputs, and use them ethically and creatively. The two belong together: AI education should build on computing foundations, not replace them.

What is the difference between AI literacy and computer science?

Computer science studies how computation works and how to use it to solve problems. AI literacy focuses on understanding AI systems and making sound decisions when creating, assessing, or using them. There is overlap: data, algorithms, and computational thinking help students reason about AI, while AI gives those ideas a relevant context.

Learning area What students learn Why it matters
Computer science foundations Computational thinking, coding, data and algorithm literacy, and statistics Students gain tools for understanding how computational systems represent information and carry out tasks.
AI understanding How AI systems use data and algorithms to produce outputs Students can reason about what a system does instead of treating it as a mysterious answer machine.
Critical evaluation How to question, check, and assess AI-generated outputs Students learn not to accept an output as reliable merely because it sounds confident.
Responsible agency How to use AI ethically and creatively, with attention to its effects on themselves and others Students can make informed choices about when and how AI belongs in their work.

The OECD and European Commission’s 2026 AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education describes AI literacy in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitudes for understanding systems, critically evaluating their outputs, and using AI ethically and creatively. That is broader than knowing how to operate a chatbot or other tool.

Why keep computer science in an AI-focused curriculum?

AI systems depend on computational processes, data, and algorithms. Students who encounter those underlying ideas can ask more useful questions about how a system produces an answer, what information it relies on, and what limits may affect its output. Coding and statistics also give learners ways to explore computational ideas rather than only consume the results.

UNESCO’s 2023 policy guidance identifies computational thinking, data and algorithm literacy, coding, and statistics among the foundations of AI learning in K–12. That supports teaching AI in connection with computer science—not treating a new AI unit as a reason to discard foundational learning.

Computer science has value beyond AI, too. The OECD reports that PISA 2025 introduced a computational problem-solving assessment for 15-year-olds focused on using modelling and programming tools, experimenting, and developing digital products. This is a reminder that students need capabilities for working with computation, not only for using AI tools.

How is using AI in class different from learning about AI?

A student can use an AI tool during a lesson without learning how AI works or how to judge its output. Conversely, students can learn about AI by examining how systems use data and algorithms, discussing limitations, or comparing outputs—even when no AI tool is used for the task.

  • Using AI: Students use a tool as part of a learning activity, such as generating an explanation or helping develop an idea.
  • Learning about AI: Students investigate what AI systems do, consider how their outputs should be evaluated, and discuss responsible use.
  • Learning computer science: Students build broader understanding and skills in areas such as coding, data, algorithms, statistics, and computational thinking.

These activities can support one another, but they are not interchangeable. Tool access alone does not ensure AI literacy, and AI literacy alone does not provide the full range of computer science foundations.

What should schools prioritize?

Schools can use three priorities to make curriculum decisions without assuming there is one prescribed sequence for every student or school.

  1. Protect time for foundations. Include computational thinking, coding, data and algorithm literacy, and statistics in students’ computing education.
  2. Teach AI literacy as a learning goal. Make understanding systems, evaluating outputs, and ethical and creative use explicit—not incidental to tool use.
  3. Connect AI to subject learning where it fits. AI can be explored within computing and other subjects, but the activity should serve a clear learning objective rather than simply introduce a tool.

AI may be taught in a dedicated unit, integrated into computing classes, or addressed across subjects. The available guidance supports adapting curricula, not one mandated arrangement or a universal allocation of instructional time.

What do student use and achievement data show?

In OECD countries, 46% of students reported using AI chatbots weekly or more to help them learn, according to the OECD’s 2025 PISA results, published in 2026. The figure indicates that AI use is already part of many students’ learning experience; it does not show that use is necessarily effective.

The same OECD results report that weekly users of AI to help with learning had similar science performance to non-users after accounting for students’ socioeconomic profile. This is an adjusted comparison, not causal evidence that AI use improves or harms achievement. It cannot establish that AI instruction is better or worse than traditional computer science instruction.

How should schools adapt these priorities to local needs?

Curriculum decisions depend on existing courses, teacher preparation, local learning conditions, student needs, and readiness to use AI. UNESCO’s 2024 student competency framework is an adaptable roadmap rather than a universal grade-by-grade sequence. A school should therefore plan around what learners need to understand and do, then decide whether the best fit is a separate unit, integration into computing, or learning across subjects.

In the United States, the U.S. Department of Education’s July 2025 guidance addresses responsible AI integration and includes priorities for AI literacy, expanding AI and computer science education, and professional development for educators. It also discusses classroom uses such as instructional materials and tutoring, alongside applicable requirements, privacy, and stakeholder engagement. This is federal U.S. guidance, not a curriculum mandate for schools everywhere.

The OECD’s 2025 policy paper likewise argues that education systems should reassess competencies, content, and learning experiences as AI changes how tasks are done. Neither this guidance nor the cited frameworks establishes a single best grade-by-grade sequence, a universal balance of instructional time, or proof that one curriculum approach outperforms the other in every setting.
