Choose EEG when your question depends on the timing or sequence of electrical brain events; choose fMRI when you need to map where task-related activity occurs. EEG records electrical potentials at the scalp, while fMRI detects blood-flow and oxygenation changes associated with brain activity. Neither is universally better: the right method depends on the signal and resolution you need, the task participants can perform, and the practical demands of acquisition.

What EEG and fMRI measure

EEG records electrical activity at the scalp

Electroencephalography (EEG) uses scalp electrodes to record voltage differences associated with the brain’s electrical activity. The signal is noninvasive, but it travels through brain tissue and skull before reaching the electrodes. This volume conduction blurs the signal’s spatial detail, so a scalp electrode does not directly identify a precise source inside the brain. NINDS describes EEG as monitoring the brain’s electrical activity through the skull, and a review of simultaneous EEG-fMRI discusses the localization limitations.

fMRI detects a blood-flow response associated with activity

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) uses MRI to detect small changes in blood flow and oxygen delivery associated with active brain regions. It is an indirect hemodynamic measure, not a direct recording of neuronal electrical events. The RadiologyInfo.org overview of brain fMRI explains that the method measures blood-flow changes when a part of the brain is working.

Which method fits the research question?

Research question or need Starting point Why it fits Key limitation
When does an event happen, or in what sequence do rapid events occur? EEG EEG has high temporal resolution and is useful when the timing of brain activity matters. Scalp recordings have limited straightforward spatial localization because signals are blurred by conduction through tissue and skull. Source
Where does task-related activity occur across brain regions? fMRI fMRI provides spatially localized maps of hemodynamic activity. The blood-flow response is slower than the electrical activity associated with it; motion and task performance can affect data quality. Source
Is the study about seizure-related electrical activity or sleep? EEG may be useful NINDS lists seizure disorders and sleep disorders among EEG uses. The best method depends on the specific research or clinical question; EEG alone should not be treated as precise source localization. Source
Which brain areas engage during speech, movement, or sensation? Task-based fMRI may be useful fMRI can identify regions engaged during tasks and may support functional brain mapping and surgical planning. Participants need to follow task instructions and remain sufficiently still. Source
Do you need electrical timing and spatially localized hemodynamic context from the same activity? Consider simultaneous EEG-fMRI The modalities provide complementary measurements. Scanner-related artifacts, hardware interactions, movement, and added analysis make combined acquisition demanding. Source; Source

There is no universal numerical resolution benchmark that applies across EEG systems, MRI scanners, protocols, and analysis pipelines. Compare methods for the actual study rather than assuming a single timing or spatial figure settles the decision. The EEG-fMRI review and researcher guidance on combined EEG-fMRI describe complementary strengths and design considerations.

What can limit the data or its interpretation?

EEG: spatial source estimates require care

EEG is well suited to examining when electrical events occur, but the signal recorded at the scalp has passed through tissue and skull. As a result, source localization requires inference and should not be presented as though a scalp electrode reads out the exact location of a brain event. The EEG-fMRI review discusses these constraints.

fMRI: indirect signal, motion, and task demands

fMRI’s blood-flow response unfolds more slowly than the underlying electrical activity. Head motion can degrade image quality, and in task-based studies participants must be able to perform the task as instructed. MRI safety screening is also necessary because the scanner’s magnetic field can affect some implanted devices. The patient-facing RadiologyInfo.org guidance states that MRI does not use ionizing radiation.

Combined EEG-fMRI: complementary data with added complexity

Simultaneous recording can align EEG electrical events with fMRI hemodynamic changes, but EEG recorded in the scanner may contain gradient, pulse, and movement artifacts. Methods literature also flags radiofrequency interactions with EEG hardware and possible heating. Specialized MRI-compatible equipment and careful acquisition and analysis procedures are therefore essential. Best-current-practice guidance and a researcher guide to combined EEG-fMRI address these demands.

A practical way to decide

  1. State the primary outcome. If it is the timing or order of rapid electrical events, start with EEG. If it is the spatial distribution of task-related hemodynamic activity, start with fMRI.
  2. Check whether the method’s signal answers the question. EEG measures scalp-recorded electrical potentials; fMRI measures blood-flow and oxygenation changes linked to activity. Do not treat the fMRI response as a direct electrical recording or EEG scalp topography as an exact brain map.
  3. Assess participant and task feasibility. For task-based fMRI, determine whether participants can perform the task and remain still; include MRI safety screening and device considerations in planning.
  4. Justify any combined protocol. Use simultaneous EEG-fMRI when the scientific value of combining timing and spatial context outweighs specialized equipment, artifact control, and analysis complexity.

The fMRI patient guidance cited here was last reviewed on June 15, 2026. Clinical indications and equipment requirements depend on the specific protocol and should be checked with the relevant clinical and MRI-safety specialists.
