NYT Connections is designed to make several groupings look plausible at once. Each board has 16 words to sort into four groups of four, and the New York Times says every puzzle has exactly one solution—even though individual words may seem to fit multiple categories. The trick is to find a precise rule that works for all four words and still lets the rest of the board resolve.
Why can Connections words fit more than one category?
The overlap is intentional, not evidence that the puzzle has several correct answers. A word can belong to a convincing everyday cluster while also carrying a second meaning, sound, spelling feature, or phrase association that makes it part of the intended group. The NYT Help Center says its word and category curation uses the Oxford Dictionary and that each puzzle has one solution.
That means a plausible association is only a hypothesis. The useful question is not simply “Can these words go together?” but “What exact rule connects these four—and does that rule explain the board better than the alternatives?”
What kinds of wordplay should you look for?
Phrase completion
Four words may all combine with the same missing word or expression, before or after it. The NYT Help Center’s example is “Things that start with FIRE”: ANT, DRILL, ISLAND, and OPAL. Reading each answer with FIRE reveals the connection, even though the words do not form an obvious semantic category on their own.

Homophones and sound
A group can depend on how words sound rather than how they are spelled or what they usually mean. Connections editor and puzzlemaker Wyna Liu has described purple as the wordplay category and specifically cites homophones as one possible device. When a literal reading does not explain a set, try saying the words aloud and considering sound-alike forms.
Spelling and letter patterns
Sometimes the link is visible in the words themselves: a shared beginning or ending, a letter added, removed, or changed, or a string of letters hidden inside each word. These are useful possibilities to inspect, not a fixed NYT taxonomy; independent analyses group several spelling-based devices together in different ways.

Alternate meanings
A familiar word may have a less immediate sense that supplies the connection. Liu has said she considers multiple possible meanings while developing categories; in her interview, “bow” serves as an example of a word with several meanings. If a candidate group feels close but not quite right, look up or mentally test another legitimate sense rather than forcing the most common definition.
Specialized knowledge
Not every difficult group is a word-form trick. Liu describes blue categories as sometimes relying on specialized trivia, such as movies or bands. A group may therefore depend on recognizing a cultural or subject-specific set rather than discovering a hidden spelling rule.

How do colors help—and where do they mislead?
The NYT Help Center labels yellow the easiest category and purple the trickiest. Liu describes purple as wordplay and says blue may involve specialized trivia; yellow and green can instead be ordinary semantic categories or synonyms, with yellow generally the most straightforward. These are tendencies, not a decoding key that guarantees the type of connection in any particular puzzle. Perceived difficulty is subjective, too.
Use color as context, not proof. If a group seems hard, consider wordplay or specialized knowledge; if it seems easy, a direct meaning-based category may fit. But test the words and the remaining board rather than assigning a rule from color alone.

How can you tell a real group from a tempting decoy?
A set of three words that appear to share a theme is not yet a solution. A 2025 ACL/COLING benchmark paper illustrates the trap with three words that could suggest “Status Quo”: using one of them that way would leave too few words for the intended “Skin Types” group. The example shows why an attractive partial association can conceal a word that belongs elsewhere.
- Write down the rule. State the connection specifically—such as “each word completes the phrase ___” or “these are sound-alikes”—instead of relying on a vague shared association.
- Test all four words. The same rule must fit every member. If one word needs a different explanation, the group may be a decoy or the rule may be wrong.
- Inspect meaning and form. When everyday definitions produce competing groups, check alternate senses, phrase beginnings or endings, pronunciation, and visible letter patterns.
- Check the other twelve words. Ask whether the proposed group leaves a stranded word or makes it hard to form the remaining three groups of four. This is a practical check against overlap, not an additional official rule.
- Submit only when the whole grouping holds together. A clever connection is not enough if it does not fit the four-word format and coexist with a complete solution for the board.
What do the published pattern counts actually show?
An independent NYT Game Solver analysis covering puzzles through September 21, 2026 estimated that fill-in-the-blank categories made up 35.9% of purple groups and homophones 5.6%. Those figures are the analyst’s classifications of category names, not official NYT statistics; the author acknowledges that the method can make errors whose extent is unmeasured. Treat them as an indication of patterns that may recur, not as odds for a given board.

The ACL/COLING paper reports that its NYT-CONNECTIONS benchmark compiled 358 daily puzzles from June 12, 2023, through June 3, 2024. It also found that even the strongest evaluated models fell short of humans by nearly 30% in that benchmark. That result describes the study’s evaluation, not a universal measure of player performance.
Where can you practice on older boards?
The NYT Help Center says the daily game is free to play on supported NYT platforms. It also says the Connections archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Older boards can offer practice spotting recurring kinds of overlap, though no single pattern is a substitute for checking each puzzle’s four-word rule.
