Keep the conversation calm and ongoing: the right boundaries depend on the assignment, the child’s age, and the service being used.
Start with the assignment, not the app
AI rules can differ between schools, classes, teachers, and individual assignments. Before a child enters a prompt or uses an AI-generated answer, ask what the teacher permits and whether the school has an approved-tool list. A tool accepted for brainstorming may not be allowed for writing a final draft.
Ask the teacher or school:
- Is AI allowed for this particular assignment, and for which tasks?
- Does the student need to disclose or cite AI assistance?
- Are there school-approved tools or account requirements?
- What should the student do if an AI answer conflicts with class materials?
School approval is not a substitute for checking a provider’s age, account, and privacy terms. Common Sense Media rates some AI apps, but a rating should not be treated as an endorsement or a replacement for checking whether the school permits the tool.
Check age requirements and account terms
UNESCO’s classroom explainer describes an age limit of 13 for classroom AI use. That is UNESCO guidance, not a universal legal rule. Requirements can also differ by service and location, so check the current terms for the specific tool and the rules that apply where your child lives before creating an account or granting access. Do not assume that a school’s permission overrides a provider’s minimum-age or parental-consent terms.

UNESCO’s broader Guidance for generative AI in education and research emphasizes a human-centred approach that includes privacy, age-appropriate use, human agency, inclusion, and meaningful educational use. UNESCO warns that many countries lack national regulation for generative AI, leaving data privacy and institutional readiness unresolved. Local protections and school policies may therefore vary.
Make privacy a practical conversation
Review account settings and the service’s data practices with your child before use. Account setup may ask for details such as age, a parent’s contact information, or billing information. A conversation with an AI tool can also reveal personal details even if a child does not think of them as sensitive: their name, school, home routines, friendships, feelings, or health concerns.

Teach your child to pause before sharing information about themselves or another person. Ask whether a detail is necessary for the school task and whether they would be comfortable with a parent or teacher reading it. Avoid entering private information just to make an answer more personalized.
UNICEF USA’s parent guidance quotes Harvard researcher Ying Xu: “Supporting children’s privacy involves both practical steps and ongoing conversations.” The advice is to treat privacy as a habit to discuss together, not a one-time settings check. UNICEF’s child-centred AI guidance, version 3.0, also identifies children’s data and privacy, safety, transparency, fairness, inclusion, rights, and wellbeing as priorities for systems and institutions.

Keep the child responsible for learning
When the teacher permits AI, use it to support the learning goal rather than produce work the child cannot explain. Helpful uses may include asking for a concept to be explained in simpler language, generating practice questions, or brainstorming possible approaches. The child should still do the reasoning, writing, and checking required by the assignment.
After AI helps, ask your child to:
- Explain the idea in their own words without reading the generated response.
- Check factual claims against class notes, textbooks, or other materials the teacher recommends.
- Identify which parts are their own work and which parts were assisted by AI, following the teacher’s disclosure rules.
- Notice when an answer is unclear, unsupported, or inconsistent with what the class has learned.
UNICEF’s parent guidance notes both the potential of accessible learning help and the risk of children offloading effort or losing productive struggle through excessive assistance. A useful question is not only whether AI produced a correct answer, but whether the child can now do or explain the relevant work.

Agree on boundaries and notice changes
Keep check-ins open rather than turning every conversation about AI into a reprimand. Ask what the child is trying to learn, what they find useful, and what feels confusing or uncomfortable. UNICEF’s parent guidance recommends gentle, open questions rather than criticism when a child’s AI use raises concern.
Pay attention to patterns such as:
- AI use displacing sleep, schoolwork, time with friends, or hobbies.
- Secrecy, anxiety, or distress when asked to stop.
- Dependence on AI for emotional support instead of talking with trusted people.
- Growing reliance on AI to complete work the child cannot explain.
These signs call for a conversation, not an automatic conclusion about what is happening. Ask what the tool is doing for the child, listen without judgment, and agree on a simple limit or check-in together. If the child seems distressed or is relying on AI instead of trusted people, involve a trusted adult or appropriate professional support.
