To prepare your home and belongings for monsoon flooding, make an evacuation and communication plan before storms arrive, assemble supplies, document your possessions, and move irreplaceable items above likely flood levels. If officials tell you to evacuate—or flooding is likely—leave promptly. Protecting people matters more than protecting property.
This checklist draws on U.S. federal guidance. Monsoon rainfall and flood risks differ by location, so follow local emergency-management instructions and consult qualified professionals about property-specific work.
Before monsoon season: make a household plan
Learn your local risks and routes
- Find out how flooding affects your home and neighborhood. Identify routes to higher ground and alternate evacuation routes.
- Sign up for local alerts and learn what local watches and warnings mean. Follow instructions from local officials.
- Choose where household members will go if evacuation becomes necessary, and make a communications plan that accounts for children, older adults, people with disabilities, medication needs, and pets.
- Charge phones and essential electronics when severe weather approaches. Keep a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio available for alerts; the National Weather Service includes one in its flood-preparedness guidance (NWS: Before a Flood; NWS Alaska: Flood Safety and Preparedness).
Prepare supplies and a go-bag
The National Weather Service recommends having enough food, water, and medicine on hand to last at least three days in an emergency. This is its preparedness recommendation, not a guarantee that an emergency will end within that time (NWS: Before a Flood).
Pack a go-bag before flooding threatens. Include identification and copies of key records, medicines, chargers, essential clothing, and cash or payment cards. Tailor supplies to your household, including children, people with medical or mobility needs, and pets. A flashlight, spare batteries, and first-aid supplies can also be useful.

Protect records and belongings before water rises
Make an inventory and keep copies accessible
Photograph or video rooms and valuable possessions before a storm. Capture identifying details and serial numbers where useful, and store the inventory somewhere you can access if the home is damaged. Keep vital records in a waterproof or water-resistant container, and store digital or paper copies online or offsite. A container can help protect documents, but it is not a guarantee against every flood condition.
FEMA advises storing valuables and important documents above the base flood elevation, preferably upstairs, and keeping copies elsewhere (FEMA: Protect Your Property—Storm Surge; FEMA: Protect Your Property—Storm Surge).

Decide what to move if a warning gives you time
With advance warning, move irreplaceable papers, valuables, electronics, rugs, and furniture upstairs or to another location above likely flood levels. If the home has no upper floor, raise items off the ground-level floor where feasible. Secure or bring in outdoor belongings if it is safe and there is enough time (FEMA: Protect Your Home from Flooding; Ready.gov/FEMA: Be Prepared for a Flood).
Reduce avoidable damage to the home
Do safe, routine maintenance
- Clear gutters, downspouts, nearby drains, and ditches when it is safe and practical.
- Test an existing sump pump before the rainy season. Ask a qualified professional whether a backup system is appropriate.
- Ask a qualified plumber about check valves that can reduce floodwater backing up through drains. The NWS also advises clearly labeling breakers or fuses (NWS: Before a Flood).
Use temporary barriers only when they suit the site
FEMA lists portable flood gates or shields, sandbags, inflatable floodwalls, and flood skirts among temporary protection options. It also lists flood sensors and other warning devices (FEMA: Protect Your Home from Flooding). These are options to assess for a specific property, not guarantees or universal recommendations.

For a barrier, consider whether it fits the opening and expected water conditions, how much time and labor installation takes, where it can be stored, whether it can be reused, and whether a local professional or authority recommends it for the site. The NWS warns that filling and placing sandbags can take longer than expected, so do not count on them if there is not enough time (NWS: Before a Flood).
Plan long-term changes with qualified professionals
FEMA identifies elevating or protecting major appliances and HVAC equipment, using flood-resistant insulation, wall finishes, and flooring, and anchoring fuel tanks as possible mitigation measures. Suitability depends on the building, local hazards, construction, and applicable requirements (FEMA: Protect Your Home from Flooding; FEMA: Protect Your Property—Storm Surge).

Electrical-system work, including raising panels, outlets, switches, or wiring, should be handled by a licensed electrician. FEMA’s brochure recommends raising listed electrical components at least one foot above potential flood elevation; treat that as source-specific guidance, not a universal design specification. Confirm flood elevations and current local code with qualified professionals before making changes. Get location-aware professional advice for structural work or utility elevation.

Standard homeowners insurance generally does not cover flood damage, according to the NWS. Contact your insurer or agent before a flood threat to ask about coverage for both the building and its contents. Confirm the current policy’s terms, exclusions, waiting period, and eligibility directly with the insurer or official program source; do not assume that coverage purchased after a warning will cover an imminent event (NWS: Before a Flood; FEMA: Protect Your Property—Storm Surge).

If flooding is forecast or a warning is issued
- Monitor official alerts and leave promptly. The NWS advises leaving if flooding is likely rather than waiting for an evacuation order. If officials order evacuation, follow their instructions (NWS: Before a Flood).
- Move belongings only if it is safe and there is enough time. Prioritize documents and valuables for an upper floor. Do not let moving possessions delay departure.
- Use installed protection safely. Activate an existing sump pump or close a backflow valve if installed and safe to do so. Deploy temporary barriers only when there is adequate time.
- Avoid electrical hazards. Do not touch wet electrical equipment or handle electrical equipment while standing in water. Turn off utilities only when safe and in line with official instructions; never enter floodwater to reach a switch or panel (NWS: Before a Flood; Ready.gov/FEMA: Be Prepared for a Flood; NWS Alaska: Flood Safety and Preparedness).
- Take people, pets, and essentials. Bring medicines, phones, chargers, and essential documents. Leave possessions behind if collecting them would expose anyone to danger or delay evacuation.
