When a submission raises a concern, the fairest approach is to ask the student to explain their reasoning, review any available drafts or notes, verify the sources, and compare the work with what the student has demonstrated in class. Treat unusual clues as reasons to ask questions—not as proof—and follow the school’s policy.
Start by making the rules clear
Before students begin, explain whether AI may be used for the assignment, which uses are permitted, and how students should disclose assistance. For example, a teacher might allow AI for brainstorming but require students to write and support the final argument themselves. Tell students what process evidence to keep, such as source notes or drafts, and what they will be expected to explain.
Expectations should be specific to the assignment and consistent with school or district rules. Ofqual’s AI in coursework resources for schools encourage a consistent institutional approach. Fairfax County Public Schools also recommends making clear whether AI is permitted and how students should demonstrate their thinking or cite AI use.
Use checkpoints to make the work visible
For a longer or higher-stakes assignment, collect a few pieces of work as it develops rather than relying only on the final submission. A useful sequence might include:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A topic or question proposal.
- Source notes and an outline.
- A draft or in-progress check-in.
- A short reflection explaining the student’s choices and revisions.
These checkpoints can support feedback as well as help a teacher understand how the final work came together. College Board describes teacher checkpoints, conversations, and process portfolios in AP Capstone; Oregon Department of Education guidance encourages discussion of the writing process and submission of outlines and drafts. Adapt the documentation to the student’s age, assignment length, learning goal, and your workload.
Talk with the student before drawing conclusions
Begin neutrally. Fairfax County Public Schools puts it simply: “When student work raises questions, begin with curiosity, not accusation.” Ask questions tied to the assignment, not questions designed to force a confession.
- “What is the main idea you want a reader to take away?”
- “Why did you choose this source, and how did it support your point?”
- “How did you reach this conclusion?”
- “What changed between your outline and final draft?”
- “Which part was hardest, and how did you work through it?”
A student’s explanation can help you assess understanding and identify useful follow-up questions. A hesitant or incomplete answer, by itself, does not establish that the student used AI.

Review the work and available evidence together
Look at the submission alongside any drafts, notes, checkpoints, or reflections the student has available. Ask them to walk you through important choices in the work, then verify cited sources and check whether those sources support the claims attributed to them.

OpenAI’s educator guidance describes a student-shared AI conversation as one possible way to examine the questions asked, the student’s critical thinking, and how information was checked and used. Do not assume every student used a particular tool or demand access to a private account. Follow school privacy rules when requesting or retaining records.
Treat anomalies as leads, not proof
A sudden change in writing style, a weak explanation of an argument, an unverifiable citation, or a large gap between drafts may justify a follow-up conversation. None proves AI use on its own. Consider ordinary explanations first: the student may have received tutoring or permitted feedback, chosen a different kind of topic, used an allowed editing aid, or spent more time revising.

Style comparisons are especially uncertain when students are developing as writers or working across languages. Chicago Public Schools warns that detection systems can produce both false positives and false negatives, and that some may disproportionately flag English Learners. A mismatch between a submission and earlier work is a prompt to understand the difference, not an authorship test.
Why an AI detector score is not evidence of authorship
A detector’s score is not the probability that a particular student used AI. The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) says a score alone is insufficient to allege misconduct. It also notes that performance is less reliable on short documents and text that has been edited or combines human and AI writing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTEQSA’s example of a 1% false-positive rate is hypothetical, not a measured rate for any current product: in a class of 100 with no AI-generated submissions, it would produce one high score on average. It should not be treated as a universal accuracy figure.

OpenAI says its detector research did not establish sufficient reliability for decisions with potentially lasting consequences. Its guidance describes cases where human writing was labeled AI-generated, notes possible disproportionate effects on English learners and formulaic or concise writing, and observes that small edits can evade detection. Chicago Public Schools identifies both false positives and false negatives; Fairfax County Public Schools says detection tools are unreliable, may raise privacy concerns, and are not endorsed by the district.
As Chicago Public Schools advises, “prioritize a holistic assessment of student work—considering multiple factors like the writing process, individual student progress, and direct conversations—rather than relying on GenAI detection software.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right kind of assessment for the learning goal
Not every assignment needs the same level of verification. If the goal is practice, experimentation, or feedback, an open learning activity may be appropriate, with clear rules about AI assistance. If students must demonstrate a specific skill independently, build in a more secure assessment or a checkpoint that lets you observe that skill directly. TEQSA describes this as a two-lane approach: some assessments are more secure, while others are open learning activities.

Balance the evidence you request against the burden it creates. A short conversation or outline may be enough for a routine task; a longer project may benefit from staged drafts. Consider accessibility and fairness, including the risk of misjudging a language learner, a student with a disability, or anyone whose writing differs from your expectations.
Follow school policy if concerns remain
If questions persist after reviewing the work and speaking with the student, document the relevant evidence and follow the school’s stated academic-integrity process. The appropriate next steps, what evidence may be requested or retained, and any consequences depend on local rules. Do not allege misconduct solely because of a detector score or a change in voice: TEQSA says a score alone cannot support an allegation, and district or jurisdiction policies govern the response.
