For ready-to-teach middle-school lessons, start with Day of AI. For learning goals and curriculum planning, pair those lessons with UNESCO’s student and teacher AI competency frameworks. They serve different purposes: one provides classroom materials; the others help educators decide what students and teachers should learn.
Which resource should you start with?
| Resource | Best for | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Day of AI | Teaching lessons in class | Free curriculum materials, including educator guides, teacher slides, and student pages. Its current curriculum page includes age guidance for 11–13-year-olds. Day of AI describes the curriculum as open-source and standards-aligned, with topics ranging from AI basics to generative AI, ethics, bias, and privacy. |
| UNESCO student AI competency framework | Setting student learning objectives | A global planning reference organized around competencies and progression levels, not a ready-to-teach lesson sequence. |
| UNESCO teacher AI competency framework | Planning teacher development | A framework for educators’ own AI competencies, including AI pedagogy and professional learning. |
| MIT RAISE resources | Finding additional MIT-developed materials | A resource page listing RAICA, Day of AI, and DAIly. MIT RAISE describes its resources as available under Creative Commons licensing; check the license for an individual item before adapting or redistributing it. |
| Google AI literacy resources | Educator-focused AI literacy training | Resources for educators, students, and families. Google describes educator training developed with ISTE+ASCD as free. |
| AI4K12 resource directory | Discovering a broader range of materials | Links to books, curriculum materials, course outlines, software, videos, and activity resource guides. Check each listing’s age range, cost, and availability. |
These descriptions come from the respective providers and organizations; they are not independent evaluations of classroom outcomes.
What can middle-schoolers learn from Day of AI?
Day of AI’s current curriculum page includes materials for ages 11–13 and classroom resources such as educator guides, teacher slides, and student pages. The provider also offers online workshops and training videos for teachers. Its teacher page says, “No computer science degree is required”; treat that as Day of AI’s description of its own implementation, not an independent assessment of how much preparation a particular class will need.
In an announcement dated August 19, 2026, Day of AI described a grade-by-grade PreK–12 curriculum. For grades 5–8, it outlined learning about predictions, data, machine learning, bias, fairness, and privacy. That announcement describes curriculum content, not evidence of student impact. Because lesson pages and grade labels can change, check the live curriculum before choosing a sequence.

How the UNESCO frameworks can guide planning
Student framework: define what learners should know
UNESCO’s 2024 student framework organizes 12 competencies across four dimensions: human-centred mindset, ethics of AI, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design. It uses three progression levels: Understand, Apply, and Create. The counts describe the framework’s structure; they are not measured learning outcomes.
Use the framework to map goals, identify gaps, or adapt a lesson sequence to your students and setting. UNESCO presents it as a global reference to tailor to local readiness and context, not as a collection of classroom lesson plans.

Teacher framework: plan educator learning
UNESCO’s 2024 teacher framework sets out 15 competencies across five dimensions: human-centred mindset, ethics of AI, AI foundations and applications, AI pedagogy, and AI for professional learning. Its progression levels are Acquire, Deepen, and Create. These are planning categories, not evidence that a particular training program improves teaching or student results.

AI literacy should address both how systems work and how people evaluate their effects. The cited resources include technical foundations alongside ethics, bias, fairness, and privacy. Adapt selections to students’ prior knowledge and needs, teacher preparation, available class time, infrastructure, and school rules.
