Choose Story Mode if you want a campaign with a defined narrative and a more contained, single-player experience. Choose GTA Online if you want an evolving online mode with ongoing activities; you can play solo or with friends, though the wider experience includes multiplayer and shared sessions. One important exception to check before you start: Rockstar says GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What’s the difference between GTA Online and Story Mode?

Rockstar calls GTA Online a “dynamic and ever-evolving online universe.” That describes a mode with continuing content, rather than a campaign with one fixed narrative endpoint. For an example of its varied activities, Rockstar’s 2026 Title Update 1.73 notes describe the Kortz Center Heist as a mission-based activity for one to four players, with prep missions and a finale. That player range applies to this Heist, not to every Online activity.
How much time does each mode take?
Story Mode: a campaign you can pace yourself
Story Mode has a campaign arc, so it offers a more bounded kind of play than an online mode built around ongoing activities. You can play at your own pace, but the official sources cited here do not provide a verified number of hours to complete it. Your time will depend on how you play and which activities you pursue.
GTA Online: as much or as little as you choose
GTA Online does not have one overall completion point or a fixed number of hours required to “finish” it. You can choose activities when you play, and Rockstar continues to add content, so the amount of time you spend is largely a matter of preference. Neither mode should be treated as having a guaranteed playtime based on an unsupported hour estimate.

Can you play GTA Online solo?
Yes. Rockstar says GTA Online is ready to enjoy solo or with friends, and some content is specifically structured for a small group: the Kortz Center Heist in Title Update 1.73 is listed for one to four players. But solo play does not turn GTA Online into Story Mode. It remains an online mode with multiplayer and shared-session elements, and activity player limits vary.
Do you need GTA Online to play Story Mode?
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar Support’s article, updated November 11, 2025, states that GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode. The same article says that if you purchased Story Mode while accessing GTA Online through a free trial or a subscription such as GTA+, Game Pass, or PlayStation Plus, you will need to purchase GTA Online to resume access to Story Mode progress. This is a platform- and entitlement-specific condition, not a universal rule for every platform or purchase configuration. Check the current listing and your entitlement before relying on access.

Check platform and account requirements before buying
The two modes belong to GTAV, but what you can launch depends on your platform, edition, and entitlement. Match any purchase to the exact platform you use, and confirm the edition and included access shown by the seller or platform store.
- PC: Rockstar’s account requirements page, updated October 4, 2024, says a Rockstar Games account is required for installation, online play, and certain online features.
- Console: The same page says a Rockstar Games account is not required to play Story Mode, but is required for certain online features.
- Subscription or trial access: On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a trial or subscription entitlement can affect whether you can continue accessing Story Mode progress, as described in Rockstar’s November 2025 support article.
Because platform and entitlement rules can change, verify the requirements displayed for your exact GTAV edition and platform at the time you buy or launch it.
