If an OCI File Storage share mounted over NFS is slow, first identify whether the problem is throughput, read/write latency, metadata operations, errors, or an on-premises transfer path. Use OCI Monitoring to compare those signals over the incident, then check client capacity, mount-target placement, NFS mount settings, directory size, quotas, and transfer design. A single metric spike is a clue, not proof of a cause.

1. Identify what is slow in OCI Monitoring

Start with the time period when the slowdown occurred. In the OCI Console, open Monitoring for File Storage and inspect filesystem read and write throughput, read and write latency, metadata latency, mount-target connections and health, and errors. OCI also groups read/write requests by request size, which can help distinguish a workload dominated by small operations from larger transfers.

Metrics use one-minute defaults. A short spike may be transient, so compare the incident with a known-good period and use a longer interval, such as 15 minutes, to see whether the pattern persists. Note which applications and clients use the affected file system and mount target.

  • If read or write latency increased alongside saturated client CPU or network use, investigate the client and network path.
  • If metadata latency is the main change, examine directory shape and metadata-heavy scans.
  • If errors increased, investigate the associated mount-target and service health signals.

These comparisons help narrow the investigation; no one graph by itself establishes root cause. Oracle’s File Storage metrics documentation describes the available measurements.

2. Check compute capacity and mount-target placement

Available compute bandwidth affects application performance. Oracle notes that bare metal instances provide the greatest bandwidth, while VM bandwidth is limited based on CPU consumed; single-oCPU VMs provide the least. Check instance capacity, CPU, and network use during the affected workload rather than assuming the file system alone is the bottleneck.

Compare the compute instance’s availability domain with the mount target’s. Oracle recommends placing them in the same availability domain to minimize latency, including when using a regional subnet. See File Storage application performance guidance.

3. Review NFS mount options

Check whether the client mount command explicitly sets rsize or wsize. Oracle’s general performance guidance recommends leaving these options unspecified so the client and server can negotiate values; the mounting guidance also warns that setting either can cause performance issues. Do not copy mount options from another operating system or application without checking the relevant client instructions.

There is a more specific note in Oracle’s large-directory troubleshooting guidance: avoid values below 1,048,576 bytes (1 MiB) for read/write performance, and treat the default 1 MiB value as best practice if the options are specified. The general recommendation remains to allow negotiation by omitting explicit values. See Troubleshooting slow operations on large directories and Mounting File Systems.

4. Separate metadata scans from data-transfer problems

If commands such as ls -l, du, find, or rsync are slow, inspect how many entries are in the directory being scanned. Oracle says metadata operations can slow when a directory contains more than 100,000 files. As a reference, Oracle’s guidance says ls -l against a File Storage directory containing 100,000 files is generally expected to complete in 10 seconds or less.

The recommended mitigation is to distribute files among subdirectories rather than keeping a very large number in one directory. Directory size does not significantly affect File Storage write throughput, however, so a large directory is not a universal explanation for slow data writes. See Oracle’s large-directory troubleshooting guidance.

5. Evaluate mount-target scaling and performance tiers

OCI reports filesystem read/write throughput averaged across mount targets, and connection metrics can reveal whether connections are concentrated. Oracle describes adding mount targets as one way to increase throughput in some workloads, but it is not a guaranteed fix. In one documented example, splitting ten clients across two mount targets instead of one increased reported throughput from about 750 MB/s to about 1,500 MB/s. These are illustrative figures, not a benchmark or promise for another tenancy.

Additional mount targets can slightly increase latency and disable the NFS server cache, potentially hurting metadata-heavy operations. Before changing the architecture, compare the workload’s read/write and metadata profile. Oracle explains the trade-offs in Increasing File Storage throughput using multiple mount targets.

Oracle’s mount-target documentation lists a Standard tier with maximum throughput of 1 Gbps and High Performance tiers of 20, 40, and 80 Gbps. These are documented maximum-throughput values, not expected results for every workload: maximums are measured for reads with blocks of at least 1 MiB, sufficient concurrency, and queue depth. For its HPMT-80 read-throughput scenario, Oracle’s example calls for aggregate client bandwidth capable of driving the target, Linux kernel 5.3 or later with nconnect, a dataset larger than 20 GB, and queue depth 64. Those conditions are workload-specific, not universal tuning settings.

Upgrading to a High Performance tier carries a 30-day billing commitment. Confirm current regional availability, service limits, workload suitability, and pricing before making a tier change. See Managing mount targets.

6. Check quotas if they are enabled

Quotas can affect performance depending on the number of simultaneous active users, whether a principal is near its quota, and whether the file system is exported through multiple mount targets. If quotas are in use, review quota metrics, events, and logs. Writes that would exceed a user’s quota are rejected with NFS_QUOTA; treat that as a quota error rather than a generic throughput symptom. Oracle’s File Storage quota documentation describes the relevant signals and behavior.

7. Rethink direct on-premises NFS transfers

If the slow operation is an on-premises server mounting OCI File Storage directly over the internet, the transfer path may be the limiting factor. Oracle describes direct mounting as very slow because NFS is chatty over the internet. Its documented approach is to use an OCI instance in the mount target’s subnet as an intermediate endpoint and stream between instances with parallel rsync tooling such as fpsync. This setup requires the appropriate network security and export settings; verify the actual route and workload before redesigning a production transfer. See Streaming data to and from File Storage.

Choose a change based on the symptom

Observed pattern First area to investigate Change to weigh carefully
Low throughput with client CPU or bandwidth near capacity Compute shape, available bandwidth, and network path Adding mount targets or moving to a High Performance tier will not remove a client-side limit.
Slow ls, du, find, or similar scans Metadata latency and number of entries per directory More mount targets may disable the NFS server cache and worsen metadata-heavy work.
Slow reads or writes across clients Filesystem throughput and latency, mount-target connections, and client capacity Multiple targets can improve throughput in some workloads; a High Performance tier has workload prerequisites and a 30-day billing commitment.
Slow on-premises-to-OCI transfer Whether the on-premises host mounts the share directly over the internet An OCI-side intermediate instance and parallel streaming may suit the transfer better.
Write failures with NFS_QUOTA Quota metrics, events, logs, and the affected principal’s usage Resolve the quota condition; treating it as a throughput issue will not address rejected writes.
