Upgrade when your current Galaxy Ultra’s condition, remaining security support, or day-to-day limits matter—and a newer model fixes those problems for a net cost you can accept. Before buying, compare your exact phone and region with the new model, then weigh camera and charging changes against your actual use, repair costs, trade-in value, and transfer needs.
Identify your exact Galaxy Ultra and market first
“Galaxy Ultra” covers multiple generations, and specifications or availability can vary by country. Confirm the full model name and region of your current phone, then compare it with the exact version offered where you plan to buy. Samsung’s Ireland comparison page, last updated 11 March 2026, cautions: “Models may vary by country.” Samsung’s Galaxy S26 and S25 comparison is useful for those two Irish-market models, but it is not a full specification history of every Ultra.
Also check your current phone’s software and security-support status for its exact model and region. Samsung’s S26 Ultra support commitment does not establish how much support remains for an older device.
Compare what changes between the specific models
For a concrete example, Samsung Ireland lists these S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra specifications. These are manufacturer-published figures for that comparison, not a guarantee that every regional variant is identical.

Decide whether the camera hardware solves a real problem
The S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra both have a 200 MP wide camera and 50 MP ultrawide, but their listed telephoto sensor arrangements and apertures differ. Samsung says the wider apertures on the S26 Ultra improve low-light photos and video. That is a manufacturer claim; it does not establish that every owner will notice a meaningful improvement in their own photos. Consider whether you regularly shoot in low light, use telephoto framing, or have a camera limitation you want to solve.
Separate battery capacity from runtime
The Ireland comparison lists the same typical battery capacity—5,000 mAh—for both models. Capacity alone does not tell you how long a particular used phone lasts. Samsung’s US page estimates up to 31 hours of video playback for the S26 Ultra, the same estimate as the S25 Ultra and one hour longer than the S24 Ultra. Samsung says actual battery life varies with network, apps, usage, charging frequency, and other conditions; treat that manufacturer estimate as a test-based figure, not a promise of mixed-use runtime.

Check charging speed and the charger separately
Samsung Ireland lists 60 W wired charging for the S26 Ultra and 45 W for the S25 Ultra. Its comparison also shows a 45W Super Fast Charger 2.0 accessory; that is not evidence the accessory delivers the S26 Ultra’s listed 60 W maximum. Confirm the exact charger compatibility and what comes in the box in your market before buying an accessory.
Assess size, storage, and performance in your own routine
The listed S26 Ultra is 4 g lighter and 0.3 mm thinner than the S25 Ultra, while both have the same listed display size and refresh rate. Handling is personal: if possible, try the size in hand and consider whether it fits your pocket, case, and daily use. Check how much storage is actually free on your current phone, what you keep locally, and which S26 Ultra storage tier meets that need. Consider processor or performance differences only in relation to your own workload, such as the apps or games that currently feel limiting.

Judge the old phone’s condition and support horizon
A newer model’s specifications do not tell you whether your current phone needs replacement. Inspect the issues affecting your use and establish the current phone’s support status before deciding.
- Battery: Does it drain too quickly for your normal day, or show signs of physical swelling? Stop using a phone with a swollen battery and seek qualified service.
- Screen and body: Is damage affecting visibility, touch response, or safe use?
- Charging port: Is the connection unreliable or intermittent?
- Storage: Are you routinely running short of space despite removing or moving files?
- Software and security: Is the exact model still receiving the updates you need?
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra Product Environmental Report states that the S26 Ultra has IP68 water resistance and dust protection, seven generations of OS upgrades, and seven years of security updates from global launch. Those commitments apply to the S26 Ultra; they are not an assessment of an older phone’s remaining support.

Compare repair, trade-in, and purchase cost
There is no universal repair-versus-replace price cutoff. Repair costs, local prices, trade-in offers, and carrier terms depend on your country, exact model, device condition, seller, and date. Get a repair quote for the fault that matters, check the trade-in value for your phone in its actual condition, and calculate the amount you would pay after the trade-in and any required accessories. A trade-in estimate is not the same as a confirmed offer.
Replacing the phone is more compelling when a condition or support problem is disrupting use and the newer model addresses it at a net cost you consider worthwhile. Repair or waiting may make more sense if the current phone remains reliable and supported, and the newer model’s changes do not address a need you have.

Plan the move before erasing or trading in the old phone
Samsung says Smart Switch can move contacts, photos, videos, notes, and calendar events to the S26 Ultra from iOS, wirelessly or by cable. The listed information does not establish that every app, setting, credential, or protected file transfers, so verify anything important rather than assuming the new phone will be a perfect clone.
