Which works better depends on your setup: iPadOS 26 gives supported iPads movable, resizable app windows, while Samsung DeX offers a desktop-style workspace on selected Galaxy devices. Choose by the exact tablet, software version, apps, input method, and whether you plan to use an external display—not by treating either platform as a single universal experience.
How the two workflows differ
Apple’s iPad multitasking is not one fixed interface. In iPadOS 26, Windowed Apps lets you arrange app windows on the iPad screen; Stage Manager is a separate option with its own supported-device list and external-display behavior. Samsung DeX is a desktop-style workspace available on selected Galaxy tablets and, for compatible devices, on an external monitor or TV. Samsung support describes it as a way to connect a phone or tablet to a larger display.
Both can support work across apps, but their layouts and device compatibility differ. Official documentation describes features, not a universal usability winner.
Choose iPad Windowed Apps or Stage Manager when…
You want movable and resizable windows on the iPad itself
Apple’s iPadOS 26 guide explains how to move, resize, minimize, close, and arrange windows in Windowed Apps. It also covers opening another app and working with multiple windows from some apps. Apple says this mode can be enabled under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures. Its windowed workflow is a fit if you want to keep the work on a supported iPad rather than making an external display central to the setup. See Apple’s Windowed Apps guide.

Consider Stage Manager as a distinct alternative
Stage Manager is not just another name for Windowed Apps. Apple lists which iPad models support Stage Manager and separately identifies the narrower set that can move apps and windows to an external display. If that external-display behavior matters, check the model-specific list rather than assuming Stage Manager capabilities are identical across supported iPads. Check Apple’s Stage Manager compatibility details.
Choose Samsung DeX when…
You want a desktop-style Galaxy workspace
On selected Galaxy tablets, DeX can run as a standalone workspace on the tablet. For supported devices, it can also connect to a compatible monitor or TV by cable or wirelessly. Samsung documents touch, S Pen, keyboard, and mouse input options, with support varying by device and connection. See Samsung’s DeX setup and mode guidance.

DeX is the more natural candidate when you specifically want that desktop-style workspace, especially on a compatible Galaxy tablet or a display-connected setup. Do not assume every Galaxy device supports every DeX mode.
Do not count on DeX for PC as a universal option
DeX for PC is different from connecting a device to a monitor. Samsung says DeX for PC is not supported on devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later; its compatibility guidance points users toward Link to Windows for some PC-connected tasks. Verify the exact device and One UI version before planning around PC integration. Review Samsung’s current DeX compatibility guidance.

Using an external display adds a separate compatibility check
A second screen is not the same as arranging windows on the tablet screen. Apple’s external-display support and resolution details vary by iPad model; Apple also notes that a suitable high-bandwidth cable is needed for high-resolution displays. Samsung documents wired DeX using a DeX or HDMI cable and wireless connections for compatible devices and displays. In either ecosystem, verify the particular tablet, display, and connection before buying an adapter or cable.
- For iPad: Check Apple’s model-specific USB-C and external-display guidance, including resolution and cable requirements.
- For Galaxy: Check Samsung’s DeX connection guidance for supported wired and wireless options.
Compatibility checklist before you choose
- Identify the exact tablet model. Apple’s Windowed Apps, Stage Manager, and external-display capabilities do not have identical model lists. Samsung also distinguishes device and connection support. Start with the precise model, not just the product family.
- Check its software version. Apple’s guidance is for iPadOS 26; Samsung’s DeX for PC limitation applies to devices released with or updated to One UI 7 or later. Feature availability can vary with software and region.
- Confirm your essential apps and window needs. If you rely on multiple windows from one app, confirm that the app and workflow support what you need. Apple specifically describes multiple windows for some apps; do not assume every app behaves alike.
- Choose your input method. Decide whether you expect to use touch, S Pen, keyboard, mouse, or a mix. Samsung documents these control options for DeX, subject to device support; Apple windowing can also be paired with an appropriate keyboard or pointer setup, but check accessory compatibility for your model.
- Decide whether you need a second display. If yes, check the tablet’s display support, the monitor or TV, and the required wired adapter or wireless compatibility before purchase. If no, compare the on-device window workflows instead.
Which one should you choose?
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Movable, resizable windows on a supported iPad screen | iPad Windowed Apps | Apple documents arranging, resizing, minimizing, and closing windows in iPadOS 26. |
| Apple’s separate Stage Manager workflow | iPad Stage Manager | It is another multitasking choice, with a specific supported-model list and a narrower list for external-display windowing. |
| A desktop-style workspace on a selected Galaxy tablet | Samsung DeX | Samsung documents standalone DeX on selected Galaxy tablets, with touch, S Pen, keyboard, and mouse options depending on support. |
| A larger screen through a cable or wireless connection | Either, subject to compatibility | Both platforms have model- and connection-specific external-display support; confirm the exact setup first. |
If your choice is close, compare the actual tablet models and the apps you use rather than trying to declare a platform winner in the abstract. The documented features establish what each workflow can do, but not which will feel easier or make a given person more productive.
