Register a .si domain through an accredited registrar, then point it to your website using the nameservers or DNS records specified by your host. Before you buy, check that the name is available and eligible; after changing DNS, allow for the registry’s hourly zone updates and resolver caching.

1. Choose a .si name and check its eligibility

Search the official Register.si registrar directory or a registrar’s .si search tool. Check availability again at checkout because another person may register the name in the meantime.

Register.si’s registration guidance and general terms set these requirements:

  • The name must be available and not reserved.
  • It must be 2–63 characters long in its textual and/or binary representation.
  • It may use Latin alphabet letters, digits, hyphens and the specified IDN letters.
  • It cannot begin or end with a hyphen, or have consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions.

2. Select a registrar and register the domain

A registrar is the service provider that manages the domain for you and submits domain transactions to the .si registry. Use the official registrar directory to find options. Register.si does not rank registrars, and the available material does not establish current retail prices or a universal best choice.

Compare each registrar’s current first-year and renewal prices, DNS management, account security and recovery, support, and transfer process. Those are useful consumer comparison points, not registry rankings.

Enter accurate registrant details and use an email address the domain holder can access. Register.si says holders are responsible for keeping their information accurate, complete and current; communication problems can put a domain at risk. Make sure the person or organization that needs long-term control is named as the holder, rather than automatically leaving the domain in a developer’s or hosting provider’s name. Review the registrar’s contract and refund terms before paying.

3. Connect the domain to your website

First ask your website host or DNS provider which setup it requires. There are two common approaches:

  • Use the host’s nameservers: Enter the nameservers supplied by your host in the registrar’s domain settings. The host then manages the domain’s DNS zone.
  • Keep DNS with another provider: Leave the existing nameservers in place and add the records your host specifies. These commonly include an address record for the bare domain (also called the apex) and possibly a CNAME for www, but the exact record names and values depend on the provider and site setup.

Follow your host’s instructions for the exact values; there is no universal A or CNAME value for a .si website. The registry’s DNS check guidance explains delegation tests, not the record settings for a particular host.

If you change nameservers, make sure the active DNS zone also contains any records needed for other services, such as email. If email stops working after the change, check that the provider’s MX and related email records have been recreated in the active zone; their values must come from your email provider.

4. Understand the .si delegation checks

Before a name can be delegated to the .si zone, its authoritative nameservers must pass the registry’s pre-delegation tests. The delegation must include at least two NS records. Nameservers must answer over both UDP and TCP on port 53, answer authoritatively, and provide consistent delegation and zone data. Register.si’s checks also cover matching NS sets, consistent SOA data, and glue consistency where applicable.

When you use a managed hosting service, you generally do not need to operate or test authoritative DNS servers yourself. Use the provider’s supplied nameservers or records; the provider should configure compliant nameservers.

5. Check delegation and allow for updates

If the domain is not delegated or does not resolve, run Register.si’s Zonemaster DNS check and review the report. The registry says a result containing ERROR or CRITICAL prevents delegation. Its pre-delegation checks run more frequently shortly after a nameserver change and less frequently over time; adding or removing a nameserver resets that checking cadence.

Since March 15, 2025, the .si registry zone has been updated hourly, according to the registry’s announcement. That is the registry’s publication cadence, not a promise that every public resolver or browser will show the new destination within exactly one hour. Resolver caching and the host’s own configuration also affect when the site works everywhere.

6. Troubleshoot common connection problems

The domain is registered, but the site does not load

  • Confirm that the nameserver setting at the registrar matches the host’s instructions.
  • If you manage DNS separately, check the host-side address or alias records, including the separate settings for the bare domain and www.
  • Check for delegation errors with Zonemaster, then allow for registry publication and DNS caching.

Delegation fails

  • Check the Zonemaster report for ERROR or CRITICAL results.
  • Verify that at least two NS records are configured.
  • Ask the DNS provider to confirm that its nameservers answer on UDP and TCP port 53 and provide authoritative, consistent NS and SOA data.

Only the bare domain or www works

Ask your host which records it expects for each name. Configuring one does not necessarily configure the other.

Email stops working after a nameserver change

Check that your active DNS zone includes the email provider’s MX and related records. Get the required values from that provider.

Know the cancellation limit

Register.si allows cancellation within 16 days after registration only while the domain is inactive. The registry treats submitting nameserver records to its activation systems as activation. That means configuring nameservers can end the return option even if you have not finished connecting the site. Check both the registrar’s refund policy and the registry’s terms before proceeding.
