AI music generators turn prompts into audio by using patterns learned from audio-related training data. Some current tools can produce songs with lyrics as well as instrumentals, but what they can make—and how much control you have over the result—depends on the specific model and version. A generated track is not automatically polished, copyright-protected, or cleared for commercial use.
How does an AI music generator turn a prompt into music?
A prompt steers a model that has learned statistical patterns from audio-related training data. It might describe a genre, mood, instruments, tempo, or song structure. The model uses those instructions to generate audio; the prompt guides the process, but does not by itself determine every musical detail.
One documented example: Google’s Noise2Music
Google’s 2023 Noise2Music research paper describes a series of diffusion models. In its example, a text-conditioned model first creates an intermediate representation of a 30-second waveform. A later model, called a cascader, uses that representation—and optionally the text prompt—to produce a higher-fidelity waveform. The paper explores using a spectrogram or lower-fidelity audio as the intermediate representation. It also describes using pretrained language models to help create text paired with training audio and to make prompt embeddings. This is one published architecture, not evidence that every music generator uses diffusion.
Commercial services may use different architectures, and their public documentation does not establish the proprietary design of every model. The practical point is that a prompt is an input to a trained system, not a complete musical score that the model follows note by note.

Can AI make a complete song with vocals?
Some current products document generating songs with lyrics and audio, while others focus on shorter clips or instrumental music. “Complete” can mean different things: a track may have vocals and recognizable sections but still need editing, arrangement, or review before release.
What Google’s Lyria 3.5 documentation describes
Google’s Lyria 3.5 developer documentation says generated lyrics and audio are returned as separate content blocks. It describes prompts for instrumental-only tracks, game soundtracks, and background music, and supports using up to 10 images alongside text for inspiration. These are documented capabilities of that product version, not a guarantee that every request will produce a particular result.

The documentation distinguishes two output modes: Clip always generates a 30-second clip, while Pro generates songs lasting a couple of minutes, with the exact duration influenced by the prompt. It also says generation is single-turn in the current version: there is no multi-prompt, iterative editing workflow. Results can vary between calls with the same prompt.
How to make a prompt more specific
Google recommends describing instruments, BPM, key, mood, and structure. Section labels such as “Verse,” “Chorus,” and “Bridge” can indicate the structure you want. Treat these as guidance for the model, not controls that guarantee exact musical or lyrical compliance.

What are the practical limits?
Generation quality and compositional control are different things. A tool may produce listenable music without giving you reliable control over every note, section, lyric, or revision. Documented limits vary by product: Lyria 3.5’s Clip mode is fixed at 30 seconds, its current generation is single-turn, and the same prompt can produce different results across calls. Other services may have different limits; do not assume that one product’s controls or output length apply across the category.
- Length: Check the selected model or mode. A short clip generator is not equivalent to a song-length generator.
- Iteration: Confirm whether the product lets you revise a specific section or only generate another complete result.
- Repeatability: A prompt may not reproduce the same track on a later call.
- Release readiness: Review the result for musical coherence, lyrics, transitions, and any other requirements of your project rather than assuming generation equals a finished master.
Can you use AI-generated music commercially, and who owns it?
Commercial-use permission and copyright are separate questions. A platform’s contract may grant permission to use or sell an output without guaranteeing that copyright law recognizes the output as protected. The applicable law depends on jurisdiction, and the platform’s terms can also depend on the plan, output, and download conditions.

Suno: plan terms and copyright guidance
Suno’s Help Center says that tracks downloaded while subscribed to a paid tier receive commercial-use rights, including use on streaming platforms, in film, television, or video games, and independent sale. Its help page, edited September 3, 2026, also says this permission does not guarantee copyright protection. Suno’s current terms limit free/basic outputs to personal, noncommercial use and condition paid-output use on the applicable terms and permitted downloads. Check the live terms for the plan and track you intend to use.
Suno separately explains that it considers copyright protection to depend on human creation: it says a song made entirely by AI may not qualify under its explanation, while user-written lyrics may be protectable separately. The company states, “Writing the prompt does not constitute the creation of the song.” This is Suno’s guidance, not a complete legal survey or a rule for every jurisdiction; it also notes that treatment can differ by region or registrar.

What to check before release
- Read the terms that apply to your account, plan, and the specific output.
- Check whether commercial use depends on downloading the track while subscribed or meeting another stated condition.
- Distinguish a platform’s permission to use a file from whether you can claim copyright in it.
- For a consequential release, verify the rules in the jurisdiction that matters to you and consider getting qualified legal advice.
What do training-data transparency and licensing tell you?
Training-data transparency is a separate concern from the usage rights a platform grants to its customers. A 2025 guest essay in WIPO Magazine said commercial models such as Suno and Udio had not disclosed their training datasets or model details as of the essay’s publication. The essay’s author also explains that neural networks may internalize statistical patterns rather than store training songs as a simple database, making it difficult to determine whether a particular song was used. This is a dated account by the essay’s author, not an audit of companies’ current disclosures.
Udio’s Help Center announced on November 19, 2025, that it was collaborating with Warner Music Group on a next-generation service under a new licensing arrangement, and said the arrangement resolved litigation between the companies. The notice also said Udio had entered licensing agreements with Warner and Universal to train new models on their data and work with their artists. Udio said, “Udio has entered into licensing agreements with Warner and Universal to train new models based on their data and to work with their artists.” The same notice said use at that time remained governed by transition terms. That announcement does not establish the terms for a particular output or guarantee current availability or future launch details.
What should you expect when choosing a generator?
Start with the output you actually need, then verify what the specific product version can do. Look for documented input types, vocals or instrumental options, output length, revision controls, and repeatability. For a project intended for commercial release, read the current terms for the exact plan and output, and do not treat a platform’s commercial-use permission as a guarantee of copyright protection.
