That does not make them the better choice in every mode. In Battle Royale Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, Loot Hacks let players customize chest contents with bonus items. For a dependable way to build a loadout, use chests; treat a supply drop as a higher-upside opportunity that may take you out of your way and expose your position.
Which gives better loot: chests or supply drops?
It depends on the mode and season. Epic’s Fortnite Reload v42.20 update notes say the odds of rarer items in Reload supply drops increased. Epic does not give a percentage, and that update is specific to Reload—not evidence of a similar change to standard Battle Royale supply drops.
In the current Battle Royale season, chests have a distinct advantage: players can use Loot Hacks to add bonus items to what drops from them. That makes chest value partly dependent on the player’s choices, rather than a single fixed comparison between two containers.
How chests work in Battle Royale
Epic’s Chapter 7 Season 4: Override announcement says players can spend Sprite Dust on Loot Hacks to customize chest drops in Battle Royale by adding bonus items that cannot be found elsewhere. So a chest’s potential value depends on which Loot Hacks a player has chosen, as well as the active season’s loot rules.

This is not a guarantee that every chest contains a particular weapon or rarity. Fortnite’s chest contents and mechanics can change between seasons, and Creative chest devices are a separate system: Epic describes those devices as producing random combinations of weapons, ammunition, health items, and world resources, with different chest variants offering different possibilities. Those Creative examples should not be read as the current Battle Royale loot pool.
What makes a supply drop worth pursuing?
Epic defines a supply drop as a loot crate randomly dropped during a game, usually containing an assortment of weapons. The crate descends into the match, making it a visible opportunity rather than a container already waiting in a building. That can mean a detour or a contest with other players; the potential reward has to be weighed against the position and timing.

In Reload v42.20 specifically, Epic says drops arrive closer to the end of storm-circle transitions, have increased odds of rarer items, and are limited to one per circle. The Fortnite Reload Dev Team described the change as: “Better loot inside! We’ve upped the odds of rarer items dropping in.” The notes do not state a precise chance or guarantee a high-rarity item.

Use nearby chests to assemble a practical loadout without basing your plan on an uncertain drop. In Reload v42.20, consider pursuing a supply drop when its timing and position make the possibility of rarer loot worthwhile. In other playlists, check that mode’s current rules before assuming the Reload change applies.

Why there is no universal loot-odds comparison
Epic’s official notes establish a qualitative rarity improvement for Reload v42.20, not a numerical chest-versus-drop rate. A third-party loot-pool reference separates playlists and cautions that season plugins and hotfixes can change items and weights, so its displayed percentages should not be treated as universal Battle Royale odds. The reliable comparison is therefore scoped to the mode and update: Reload supply drops got a rarity-odds increase, while current Battle Royale chests can be customized through Loot Hacks.
Fortnite mechanics change with updates. Epic’s Fortnite news page and the active playlist’s announcements are the best places to verify which season and mode-specific rules are in effect.
