Yes. Notability can convert selected digital handwriting into typed text. In an open note, use the Select tool to circle the ink, tap inside the selection, then choose Convert and Text. You can also search handwriting without converting it.
How to convert handwriting to text in Notability

Open the note containing the handwriting.

Choose the Select tool in the toolbox.

Circle the handwriting you want to convert, then tap inside the selection.

Choose Convert, then Text. Notability says the conversion happens instantly.

Can Notability convert handwritten equations?
Yes. Select the handwritten equation and choose Convert, then Math. Notability describes the converted equation as a high-resolution, scalable image, rather than typed, editable equation text. See the official conversion guide for the workflow.
Can you search handwriting without converting it?
Yes. Notability supports searching handwriting across notes or within an individual note, so you can find handwritten content without turning each selection into typed text. The app processes handwriting in existing notes while it is open, according to its support guide.

What languages does handwriting recognition support?
Notability’s conversion guide lists English, Danish, Dutch, Filipino (Tagalog), French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Recognition uses the device language by default.
You can change the language for new notes in the general setting, or change it for one note through Note Info. Changing the general setting does not alter existing notes. Consult the handwriting guide for the current settings instructions.

Which Notability plans include conversion?
Notability’s current subscription FAQ says Plus includes converting handwriting and math into typed text. It also says Classic users retain handwriting recognition and math conversion under the stated legacy terms. Because plan names and entitlements can change, check the current details for your account in the app or the subscription FAQ before relying on access.
Do you need an Apple Pencil?
No. Notability’s getting-started guide says you can write with a finger or stylus. The app’s Apple Pencil guide says it is fine-tuned for and works best with Apple Pencil (1st and 2nd generation); Apple Pencil USB-C does not have pressure sensitivity. A Pencil is optional, and you should confirm compatibility with your iPad before buying.

The feature converts selected ink, but the official materials do not provide a handwriting-style accuracy rate or guarantee perfect recognition. Review the result and correct any misread words before using or sharing the text.
